Inevitably, that raised the question "are we right and they are wrong?" The uniform response was that "we believe we are right, but that doesn't necessarily mean anyone else is wrong, they just may have a different path." There was nothing even approaching "our way is the only way and the rest are fucked." That may have been deeply implicit somewhere, but it was never said out loud. I have racked my brain and I cannot think of a single prejudice that was instilled or reinforced by my church upbringing. Methodists are usually adamant about not being adamant. It will be interesting to see how that holds up with the new GMC denomination. I've been tracking the formation of the GMC. They seem to be sliding further towards an episcopacy structure that doesn't allow for a divergence of views while the UMC is sliding a little towards congregationalism to maintain a divergence of views. I have noticed that there are a number of people bringing their grievances into the GMC with their biggest gripe being the "openess" of the UMC. There are some that want to drop the Wesleyan quadrilateral and adopt the Anglican three leg approach since Christian experience can lead to relativism.

January 26Jan 26 I have tried to start reading the bible as a New Years resolution. Beeing reading some of the OT. Pretty wild stuff and there is more to it than the sanitized stories we are taught in sunday bible school class as kids too.

Really helps to reinforce the gulf there is between the holiness of God and the sinfulness of man (and myself).

The description above sounds like a certain religion for sure. These are the stories that are told about that part of the world whether it's part of actual documented history, or the mythology of religious gospel. Still the same old question. Did the people of the middle East make the religions crazy, or did the gospel turn the people of that part of the world into "blood thirsty in the name of god" lunatics? A little bit of both I guess. Thanks Abraham.

I don't touch the NIV, it's been changed to fit evangelical beliefs. Like changing the order of events in the second creation story or changing Elhanan to killing Goliath's brother instead of Goliath.
January 26Jan 26 Had a youth minister that called it the non inspired version. Always thought that was funny. I got a children’s bible that I’ve been reading to my son most night. He enjoys it.

Thanks Abraham. "Craziness" is not inherent to the Middle East. The Bible documents, with varying accuracy, an early period of human history during which people were primitive. If we had similar works documenting contemporary civilizations elsewhere and with a bit of hyperbole thrown in, it would be similar. The Middle East, though, has remained more primitive than some other parts of the world. Religion may have played a role in that, but also the conditions, like sub-Saharan Africa.

Meh, he’s your standard run of the mill apologist misconstruing actual critical scholarship to fit his particular theological view/agenda. Besting Billy Carson in a debate is the equivalent of high schooler beating a 2nd grader in one on one. For example: claiming that the great Isiah scroll (a Dead Sea scroll) is “word for word” identical to the Masorectic text. No actual scholar would make that claim (in reality well over half of the verses have variance between the two). Huff does it to make an apologetic theological point as to the infallibility and divine transmission of scripture. I.e. “Look how amazing it is that over hundreds and thousands of years that it hasn’t changed even one word!” And it worked, he got a “WOW!” out of Joe.

There is absolutely no connection between the modern Church of Christ and Early Christianity. It's a ridiculous claim. Pretty much every Christian sect without apostolic succession* needs to accept that they are just splinter groups that grew out of previous sectarian disagreements between even earlier derivatives of Christianity. *Anglican church's claim is a little sketch.
