December 24, 20205 yr I can deal with this. 50s are a good temp to tend the prime rib on the smoker, and I can have a nice fire in the pit & watch TV while sipping on some good stuff on the patio. It ain't snow, but cool enough to feel like the holidays.
December 24, 20205 yr Here's a current temp map for Texas. Marfa is showing 10 degrees. Texas Temperature Map - Air Sports Net (usairnet.com)

December 24, 20205 yr Ya know when I bitch all summer? Well this is fucking perfect. Do this every day.
December 25, 20204 yr Looking like NE Kansas to NE Iowa is supposed to get steam rolled middle of next week. 9-16" of snow currently predicted. Would be the biggest single snow event I've ever been a part of if it hits the high tick.

Doesn’t look good if things hold up
December 25, 20204 yr Went to bed to rain and woke to a White Christmas. Thankfully, unlike last week's that brought us a foot of heavy/wet snow today's is light and fluffy. It's pretty cold out so that's the cause for that, about a 35-degree drop from yesterday.
December 25, 20204 yr Woke up to it being 59 degrees this morning, rain has pretty much washed out 90% of last weeks snow, and now some areas are under flash flood watch, strong winds this morning also knocked out power for a few hours. We have a generator but not for the whole house so oven/stove couldn't be used and Christmas dinner is delayed.
December 25, 20204 yr First non-white Christmas since I moved here. Nothing in the forecast. Kinda sucks.

I miss the one we had when my wife and I were up just outside of Saratoga Springs.
December 27, 20204 yr Meanwhile in SoCal, I took my kids swimming today. Temperature today was high 60s, with a low tonight in the mid 40s. Having a heated pool (maintained by the HOA, 20 second walk from my house, and no one else swimming) is glorious.
December 28, 20204 yr With chances of precipitation which could mean.......Don’t want to jinx it, waiting to hear from PhDhorn.

Des Moines area probably only has a few weeks most years where you'll have enough snow. I got back into it last year, and I'd say I got a solid 5-6 weeks of good snow pack for it up here. But it's a great way to get outside and work out in the dead of winter.

I want to get snowshoes too, but I'm in Des Moines, so I don't know if it's worth getting stuff like that.

I just looked up my local group's Facebook page, and they opened trails on January 14th, 2020 and quit grooming on February 24th. That was the extent of the season, and that was a pretty normal winter, and as you know, I'm basically in Minnesota/Wisconsin. In Des Moines, I'd look more into a fat bike to navigate the mixed wintery conditions and get outdoor exercise.
December 28, 20204 yr I don’t understand the fat tire bike riders who risk their lives on dicey roads just to ride a bike.

I keep checking the snow report at the ski area we spent $1600 for season passes, and it always says 0” early season conditions. They’ve been open for a month and have a base of 13” listed. I’m not skiing on rocks, fuckers. the Nordic association hasn’t been grooming trails either, too warm and not enough snow.

I've got a buddy who has a season pass down at Snowy Range and they already have a fair amount of snow. I realize that's a long ways from you, but given it's farther south, I'd have guessed you would be farther along.
December 31, 20204 yr So they did know what they were doing when they named Alpine. 18-24" of snow predicted just to the east: (I don't know if the image will change over time. Guess we'll find out....) Edited December 31, 20204 yr by clapclapclap
December 31, 20204 yr Al told me not to buy snowshoes or skis so I had to navigate this in my boots. How did the snake skins hold up?Winters here, fuck 2020

December 31, 20204 yr Big Bend covered in 15 - 20 inches. Pretty impressive. Trying to find some pictures but it looks like all the roads are shutdown now. Hopefully some good pictures will show up online in a bit

December 31, 20204 yr I've got 7 inches for y'all (and still growing) out in Big Spring. This is the roof of my car. Hard to distinguish the roofline from the background across the street.

I guess this may come as a surprise but not everyone on this site lives in the Austin - Lake Travis area. Some of us have had plenty of rain the last month or so and don’t really need two straight days of flash flooding.
