September 21, 20205 yr Holy crap! Our orthodontist just said it would be $6,000 to put braces on the kiddo! Are you kidding me?! I'm going to go out and buy a 3d printer and make some invisalign's myself! Does this price sound right? Anyone else had to do braces for a kid lateley and if so, was it that much?
September 21, 20205 yr Why do you want your kids to have crooked teeth? Some people. . . (kidding) I don't remember exactly how much I spent on my 2 kids braces/retainers but seems to me like both together came out to $6K over a period of several years. Seems like a racket. A huge, huge racket. But my kids (in their 20s now) have straight teeth. Edited September 21, 20205 yr by BearSchlong
September 21, 20205 yr Seems high but you didn't tell us how jacked up the teeth are. Edited September 21, 20205 yr by RexWilson
September 21, 20205 yr There are many brace alternatives aside from Invisalign: Byte and FastBraces come to mind. Many cost less than $6k. Most won't work well if your kid's teeth are seriously messed up. Edited September 21, 20205 yr by Apep
September 21, 20205 yr They aren’t cheap. Not sure what we are paying total but I know it’s about $200 every time
September 21, 20205 yr So, this goes back about 20 years, but my ex-wife actually did something pretty smart. She took the kid to a pricey, reputable orthodontist. He did the examination, and gave her a "treatment plan" and an estimate. She then took him to a chain braces place, "SmileCare" or some such. They gave her the identical treatment plan, and an estimate about half of the other guy. We went with the cheap place, and his teeth turned out great. I relied on the ex for this as she had worn braces and I had not, so I knew nothing.

She had a deal if you paid for the whole thing up front, there were no additional charges for visits, broken bracket replacements, etc. So it was all in pricing.

September 22, 20205 yr $3k each for 2 kids and also the wife. People say our dental insurance is badass, and I believe it.
September 22, 20205 yr The worse the teeth the more $$ it gets. I've heard to stay away from invisalign bc kids just can't keep them in their mouths.
September 22, 20205 yr Just dropped 1k first payment for my son last week and I think we are paying another 1k in a couple months. They said we have good insurance and it appears so.

Regarding the cost of braces: it's approximately $200 per month per kid until you realize they haven't been to the ortho in 3 years.

Not all of us had access to those things( like braces) when we were growing up. It's yet another example of folks not being quite as privileged as some people assume. I'll just leave it at that. September 22, 20205 yr The weird thing is kids want them now even if they don’t really need them. Orthodontist association did a masterful marketing job on Minecraft or something
September 22, 20205 yr The worse the teeth the more $$ it gets. I've heard to stay away from invisalign bc kids just can't keep them in their mouths. My 14yr old begged for invisalign instead of braces. No way in hell. He would forget to put it in and it would take forever and the cost would add up for all the extra visits. Also, he would loose that shit in no time. He has to use find my iPhone multiple times a day cause he can’t keep track of his damn phone which is a lifeline for teens now a days.
September 22, 20205 yr Orthodontist do extremely well, now you know we’ll. We paid about $5k for each of our kids with one of them having to do $2k worth of stuff prior to that. They do go in a lot during the period with braces on, but they rarely see the ortho on those visits.

I've never met one that wasn't sexy as fuck,
September 22, 20205 yr My daughters ran like $3500 or so. Old school steel no invisalign.Doc said it runs in waves as some ages want invisalign. We let her pick and she picked the steel. We just got them a few years ago. Still wears a retainer

September 22, 20205 yr yep, 5.5k per kid and wife too... 6 months after finishing paying for the 4th kid.. company changed dental insurance and covered 50% up to age 18.. 🤬
September 23, 20205 yr My kid’s were either $6 or 8K. Can’t remember. They finally come off next week after a 4 month COVID delay.
September 23, 20205 yr I'm pretty sure when my twins had them done, it was about $3000-3500 each. Luckily, I got to split that with the ex-wife. So I guess my advice is to get divorced and cut your payments in half.
September 23, 20205 yr get divorced and cut your payments in half. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. I had a rough day, thanks for the laugh.
September 23, 20205 yr My oldest is in 3rd grade and has braces on her top teeth right nw. Something about needing space. I had them when I was young, too. She will need them when she’s older, but they should cost less and shouldn’t need to stay on for a long time.My teeth have all moved so I’m visiting my kids ortho next Tuesday.
September 24, 20205 yr Shitty dental insurance saved us $1,500. Total cash price after that was about $3,500. New dental apparently pays 50%. So that helps with kid #2. Edited September 24, 20205 yr by dcbc
September 26, 20205 yr 5-6k is about average. 24 months is typical time frame. Components are about $100 (I sold them) They cost each visit out at about $100. 24x$100 is $2400. + components is $2500. Double that for profit. There’s your 5k. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Fortunately, whatever my insurance doesn’t cover, my ex has to pay for 60% of that under our decree.

October 1, 20205 yr My kid was seen today. Has some cuspids or premolars that don't have room to come in properly. Needs a spacer to make room and braces just on front 4 teeth to keep them together as the spacer does it's thing. Apparently my insurance is good and covers half - $1500 cost to me. Not sure about all the checkups and things as I didn't talk to them.

We paid about 10% more than that for our daughter. There were lower quotes and higher quotes, and we went with the ortho in the mid-range were comfortable with. To bracket it, the guy at Woodhill Dental in Dallas quoted $11,000 and the shitshow dental conglomerate-in-a-box covered by our insurance quoted us $4,400 OOP after insurance, which actually may have been more total. It was a three year process, and the ortho we used had a plan that autodebited 1/36th of the total per month interest free. So it was a relatively small deal from a budget sense. Her teeth were really complicated, though. Invisaligns wouldn't have done it by a long shot.

Not sure about all the checkups and things as I didn't talk to them. Yeah, we did that. Spacer on the bottom is not a big deal. The one on the top was just agony for her, though. It didn't really work much in 6 months. And longer term use poses risks to nose shape and facial structure that we just didn't want to take. We ended up extracting 3 baby teeth early and 2 of her permanent teeth to get everything to line up. Apparently a big cause of her issues were that her molars came in before her front teeth and just took all the space, so when the other teeth came in they just had to find a place. But her teeth look really good now. I mean, perfect. Hope it stays that way.
October 2, 20205 yr Timely thread is timely. Kid just went to the ortho yesterday. She's got some fucked up teeth. They may have to pull one that is coming in sideways. For now, she has to wear rubber "spacers" whatever those are for a while, then some sort of 'device" to widen her jaw before she gets actual braces. Wife didn't mention a price, I didn't ask because I don't want to know.

October 3, 20205 yr I got invisalign about 10 years ago. I purchased it as a Groupon from a local Austin dentist. Was about $3k upfront with no extra costs, but don't worry, Groupon had a coupon code available and discover was running a cashback deal, so I saved an extra $500 or so. I remember I had to call discover to get my credit limit increased before I could make the purchase with my card. Edited October 3, 20205 yr by KYHorn
