I’m sending Mike Leach my well wishes via a dark shed locked with tons of Almond Joy inside.

Probably too soon to talk about his legacy but people are going to remember him for all his zany pirate shit but there’s an argument to be made that he’s the most influential offensive coach of the last twenty years.

Yup

If he's on an ECMO machine, that's basically a bridge to nowhere.

I’m not saying he can/will prevail here, but it’s 2022; ECMO is not a death sentence.

A guy that intentionally drops a fake play sheet that he knows the opposition graduate assistants will pick up can't helped and be liked by his opponents. Hope the pirate pulls through but it sounds dire.

This is fucking sad. I’ve always respected Coach Leach for what he has achieved on and off the field; his willingness to speak his mind; his aversion to what everybody else would deem “normal” for a man in his profession; and most of all his ability to keep opposing players, coaches, and fans on pins and needles when facing his team. He got an extremely bad rap at Tech, and they have been paying for it ever since.

I was relieved when he left the big 12 conference because he was the only coach I actually feared; precisely due to the unpredictable nature of his teams and their ability to play up to their competition. There was no variance with Stoops. If you didn’t have supreme talent and a killer instinct, he would embarrass you. Snyder’s teams were going to be disciplined, and if you fucked around on special teams, they would beat you. Gundy’s the same every year—if you have the talent and discipline to outlast him, you will win. Kinda the same with Campbell. With Leach, you never fucking knew because you could be up by three scores and be miserable. If they got a lead, you’d be miserable because they could score at will and you might not get a chance to come back. You had to defend for four downs and for four quarters. It was constant unease.

Mike Leach made me a Chance Mock fan for life. Mike Leach made a lot of people Blake Gideon haters for life. On paper, neither one of those games should have been close enough for those players to have made a difference. Mike Leach made college football fun and populated college football with more of his disciples than many coaches with better records and more trophies. His coaching tree almost seemed to be born out of the need to defeat Hayden Fry’s coaching tree, and they largely did in time. Most of all, Mike Leach knew how to humiliate aggies in ways that exposed their deepest insecurities. Here was an intellectual; who never played college football; whose offense was antithetical to everything aggies thought they knew about football; who thumbed his nose at their pageantry and bullshit traditions; and then beat their asses like a rented mule. I loved him for that.

And yet, I am reminded of a little anecdote from last year. I happened to be tuned into the post game presser (I tuned into a lot of his presser bc they were often gold) after his team beat a&m yet again in Kyle, and during questioning, a voice seemed to interrupt the proceeding out of nowhere. All of a sudden, Leach’s face lit up as he realized the voice was a former Aggie coach, either Gene Stallings or RC, I can’t remember which, complimenting him on how well his team played that day. He stopped the whole presser to have a brief conversation with him in front of everybody. Leach was genuine and gracious, and it correlated with what I had heard other coaches relay about the type of guy he was off the field.

The man is an absolute treasure and I sincerely hope he pulls through this because college football is so much better with him in it. Godspeed, coach.

Fuck sakes, just heard about this. Gotta pull through pirate, CFB won't be the same without you.

Just heard about this. Awful news. College football without the pirate just seems wrong. Really hope he pulls through.

His book is good for those that haven’t read it.

this sucks. not many people are truly 1 of 1, but Mike Leach is. he's easily my favorite college football coach of the last 20 years. this is really shitty news. there will never be another Mike Leach.

Guns up for Mike Leach.

Just thinking about how much hell he used to catch for going for it on 4th down so often and just making unconventional calls frequently. These days, many coaches are doing the same using analytics.

Mike Leach, being the contrarian he is, was actually right based on the numbers a lot of the time. He is just willing to take risks so many other coaches aren’t.

“Mike Leach is fighting for his life, and we can't get Bob Stoops onto a fucking helicopter!” — Denis Leary, probably

When they made Leach, they broke the mold. Rumor is they beat the hell out of the mold-maker, too.

Very damned awful news

Unapologetically authentic, hilarious and always willing to help those in the industry. It’s a testament to Leach as a person and a coach that so many of us on this board (his teams shattered our hopes on more than one occasion) absolutely love him. Prayers up!

I think this story is courtesy of Lincoln Riley. Something about Leach having a 90 minute call with a wrong number…

“He picked it up and said, “Hey, how’s it going?” And then he listened for a second and asked, “Where ya calling from?”

He kept talking on the phone and I eventually sort of tuned out. Now, a short phone conversation for Coach Leach is an hour. So he was talking about this and that, and I was kind of hunkered down working on my own stuff. At some point, the call got dropped. They must have lost reception. Coach said, “Can you hear me? Are you there?”

Then he closed his old-school flip phone, swung it back open and redialed. He said, “Hey, sorry I lost you.” And then they resumed their conversation for another 30 minutes or so before Coach finally hung up.

After he was done, we started talking and I said, “Hey Coach, who was that on the phone?”

And he said, “Oh, they had the wrong number.”

Hes over 60, multiple comorbidities, and on ecmo? The survival rate for someone like that is extremely low. When I used to work in the icu, if u were put on ecmo, there was maybe a 5% chance you were living more than a month or two. Even if you got outta the hospital, u were still as good as dead

No matter how this turns out, Mike Leach will always be in my pantheon of coolest people. This is my favorite Leach quote. He was asked at a postgame WSU presser "What was the best party you ever attended?" All I have is the link but if it works, it's well worth the watch. Sail on Space Pirate, sail on, come what may.

Jeez I had forgotten how many bizarre hilarious moments he produced over the years. Such greatness.

Just heard about this. I guess if everyone thought he was on death’s door last night then not getting bad news by now is good news, right? I hope he pulls through. I don’t know about the rumors of his planned retirement but I’m sure he was looking forward to eventually spending some of his golden years relaxing in the Keys.

I hope he recovers, retires and gets a podcast or call-in show or something.

Please God, if You're listening, take a little time off of the fucking Ukraine and the Russians and all that shit, and bring back Mike from Your doorstep. We need his attitude, and there isn't much I wouldn't give to hear another half hour or so of dating tips.

It totally depends on WHY he’s on ECMO and what the comorbidities are.

Was it @hayden_horn who ran into Leach in Hawaii?  Whoever it was, that story was greatness.

Yes it was Hayden and it was a great story.

From Saturday Down South

Quote

Mike Leach continues to recover from serious health complications that began on Sunday, and he remains at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson on Monday.

The Clarion-Ledger reported that the Mississippi State coach had a massive heart attack on Sunday, and Leach, 61, collapsed at his home in Starkville, but did not receive medical attention for between 10 to 15 minutes. EMTs used a defibrillator machine and delivered multiple shocks to restore normal heart rhythm.

After he was stabilized at Oktibbeha County Hospital, he was transported by helicopter to UMMC. Two of his 4 his children are already in Jackson with the other two en route. Leach also may have suffered seizures with the possibility of brain damage as the situation is dire.

Damn... Leach is one of a kind. Really hoping he pulls through with at least 50% brain function. Guessing he'd still be fun and entertaining.

Damn, hoping he lives.  He’s great for college football and always a thorn in aggy’s ass.
