December 13, 20223 yr I have a serious sadness. To say he marched to the beat of his own drum is the understatement of the year.
December 13, 20223 yr Popular Post Pretty damn solid coaching tree: The success of Leach's Air Raid extended far beyond the programs he coached. The branches of his coaching tree are extensive as Dave Aranda (Baylor), Neal Brown (West Virginia), Sonny Cumbie (Louisiana Tech), Sonny Dykes (TCU), Dana Holgorsen (Houston), Kliff Kingsbury (Arizona Cardinals), Lincoln Riley (USC) and Ken Wilson (Nevada) -- among many others -- all coached under him at one point. Very solid thoughts on nachos! This is awesome. People are sharing a lot of personal stuff that hasn’t been widely seen. I think he took time for anyone. That is so very rare. It appears anyone who wrote or called him or bumped into him…anyone who engaged with him…he had time for. Incredible.
December 13, 20223 yr The only good thing that will come of this will be the supercut "Best of Mike Leach" video that someone makes. Popcorn ready.
December 13, 20223 yr RIP Coach Leach. One of my favs who didn't coach the Horns. His ability to beat the Aggies was amazing, and of course so was his humor. Then more importantly, sounds like he was a great husband, father, and a leader of players.
December 13, 20223 yr Leach had a saying that "you're either coaching it or you're allowing it to happen." That's always stuck to me as a parent. What a bummer. I'll always wish I got to see him coach one more game against A&M.
December 13, 20223 yr Leach had a saying that "you're either coaching it or you're allowing it to happen."100% truth. Train or be trained.

RIP Pirate We all know it but it is never real until it happens to someone that brings it to the forefront. This is what has been getting me in addition to the the news as I say I love you to those around me. Edited December 13, 20223 yr by DanTheHorn

December 13, 20223 yr RIP, Coach. Gone too soon. Without a doubt, he was the best character in college football. Like others have mentioned, his fingerprints are all over this game today.

December 13, 20223 yr Well.....shit. Adios, Coach Leach. A true original, I loved him even when he'd beat us. This sucks.
December 13, 20223 yr 1 minute ago, futureman said: I'd say the opposite. He was about to have to quit football for health reasons. That was going to be tough for him. He suffered 24 hours max, which in the grand scheme of things is minute, especially since he was technically "out." Those 2 things make this ever so slightly easier for me. The flipside of that is thinking about how much he loved his family and the vast network of friends/ colleagues/ protégés he had. You know he would have been a fun mofo just to be around and listen to his sage counsel and quick wit. In that aspect, I could see it as a very tough loss, but no more so than Robin Williams.
December 13, 20223 yr Got dam it this has really gotten to me. I can't think of another opposing coach I liked half as much or would legit shed a tear over. He truly transcends football...just an incredible human. Someone upthread compared him to John Madden and I think it's spot on. Everyone from any walk of life loved the guy and can't say a bad thing about him. Truly sad time
December 13, 20223 yr When you look at the state-wide scores of Texas high school football games (go way down, into the 2a and 3a box scores), or take in a game, you’ll realize that Mike Leach may be the biggest single influence on football in Texas today. RIP Pirate. Some of the most entertaining, maddening, downright fun memories of football I have were created by your mad genius.
December 13, 20223 yr My brother-in-law died last year in very similar circumstances. Cardiac event, loss of oxygen to the brain, never woke up. Such an awful thing for his family.
December 13, 20223 yr May your seas be always calm, Pirate. A man who singlehandedly made college football better and more fun. This one really hurts.

December 13, 20223 yr if anything can come from this tragedy, let this be a signal for you to check yourself with a doctor, blood test would be the key.
December 13, 20223 yr Changed the game and at the same time made Tech games fun the watch, no matter who they played. Can you name another school that has basically kept the same offensive scheme after a head coach departs? What an impression, amiright? Some of the victories he had were outstanding. Mike Leach is a legend. A legend greater than most would have ever thought he would become.
December 13, 20223 yr I think you could argue that if you wanted to one day be a football coach, there was no better path than to go to a QB on a Mike Leach coached team. Lincoln Riley went from Muleshoe, Texas to coaching Heisman winners at OU and USC due to Mike Leach.

My first real Mike Leach initiation was watching that 2002 Tech game in the dorm. Oh god. I still remember that weird stick figure logo on the jerseys.
December 13, 20223 yr I’m truly sorry for this next clip…of all the funny moments he gave us…this one showed also his true heart. Again, I’m sorry so spoiler alert…the tears started fucking flowing again watching it. Damnit. I read Leach donated his organs…also that he was at a holiday party Saturday night as well…I guess some people got a chance without knowing it to say goodbye. Anyway sorry for this clip: Tears free flowing…floodgates opened…dam burst…
December 13, 20223 yr I forgot about this gem: "Once in a while a pirate can beat a soldier, you know." He said that as he was grinning after beating aggy while at Tech. Beating aggy was something he did regularly.

December 13, 20223 yr There was one post-game interview I remember, I think with Washington state where he actually got choked up talking about the effort of his team after their win. For the life of me I cannot find it on youtube.
December 13, 20223 yr I wish we could just for today change the banner to “Swing Your Sword” or something like that. We are all Pirates today. I am at least…
December 13, 20223 yr The world is a little less bright without you. Thank you for giving us the gift of you, coach.
