I was there.  It was greatness.  Had some longhorns in our section who decided to catch the game before going to the Rose Bowl a couple of days later.  We were all one family that night.

Next day at the San Diego zoo every Longhorn we saw thanked us for beating Cal.

I remember my brother calling me on the phone during the game and saying "Hey Cal, remember... we have to play these guys every year!" It really was the star on top of the "Who deserves to go to the Rose Bowl" Christmas Tree.

That was a great year for bowl games. Holiday Bowl, beatin' Meatchicken in the Rose, and watching USC just absolutely defenestrate OU.

Bruggman: One of the quarterbacks at Texas Tech took notes on Leach’s stories, and he would quote Leach but he wouldn’t say the F word and he wouldn’t write the F word. He left his notebook behind one day and somehow Leach got a hold of it and was looking at it, so the next day in the meeting he said, “I want you to get up on the board and write the word ‘fuck.’”

Leach would've been a fantastic Surly poster.

I think you could argue that if you wanted to one day be a football coach, there was no better path than to go to a QB on a Mike Leach coached team.

Lincoln Riley went from Muleshoe, Texas to coaching Heisman winners at OU and USC due to Mike Leach.

Partially true, but Lincoln Riley was a phenom, also. He was basically a GA as a sophomore, and QC right after that. Let recognized it almost immediately.

As far as studying under Leach, it would be hard to find a better mentor/sponsor

My friend Dave wrote a great piece for ESPN about Leach and his enormous impact on football.

Quote

Leach not only produced record-setting quarterbacks; he forced competition to keep up with him. By 2008, the Big 12 had five of the 10 highest-scoring offenses in college football. And Leach drew the curiosity of people who were interested in a new way of thinking in college football.

Quote

Before Leach's arrival, Texas Tech had been to the Cotton Bowl, historically a desired destination for Texas schools, just twice -- in 1939 and 1995. Under Leach, they went twice in nine seasons, in 2006 and 2009. They have not been back since his departure in 2010. He's the only coach in 103 years to win 11 games at Washington State.

Fittingly, Leach's last win, Mississippi State's 24-22 triumph over Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl, was the Bulldogs' seventh win over a team ranked in the AP poll while the Bulldogs were unranked under Leach in the past three seasons. No other school has more than four unranked vs. ranked wins in that span.

Quote

As a result, a group of coaches who grew up watching Leach's stubborn insistence on spreading the field have forced schools like Alabama to bend to them, not the other way around. Nick Saban famously said, "Is this what we want football to be?" about no-huddle offenses, and a generation responded in the affirmative. Now, Saban and contemporaries like Bill Belichick are running the same wide-open concepts.

You know how I can tell I've been on this Surly thread too long today.  I was flipping through the YTTV guide tonight and saw a listing for National Treasure and just assumed it was a special about Leach.  Friggin' Nick Cage.

On and off the field.  I especially enjoyed his trolling aggy on their self anointed 'elite fandom.'

This is back when I first really started to appreciate Mike Leach as a man... Apologies if it's been posted. I've not seen it here... But good advice all around.

I'm sure Leach appreciates this.

Those dipshits will do anything to puff on their own limp dicks

Mike Leach once said he took a dump in the visitors’ locker room and deemed the water pressure to be the finest in the land and proof the texum aiz muh nim is the bestest university in the world.

I prefer these:

"A&M wants to rip on our fans and all that. Our fans are as good as their fans are. One thing our fans don't do is sit around and whine about other teams' fans. A&M spent a significant part of the week whining about what our fans are like."

More on the same:
"It's interesting to me that all these Aggies—whether they're at A&M or here—are sitting around with halos over their heads and they have some divine expertise on fanmanship. I just don't believe that's the case. For the record, I think our fans are better than the Aggie fans."

On the Aggie Corps of Cadets:
"How come they get to pretend they are soldiers?  The thing is, they aren't actually in the military. I ought to have Mike's Pirate School. The freshmen, all they get is the bandanna. When you're a senior, you get the sword and skull and crossbones. For homework, we'll work pirate maneuvers and stuff like that."

The second paragraph would have sufficed.  The first one is just a lot of aggy self-puffery.

I’m friends with a couple of former athletic trainers from Tech In the early aughts. They have always did he was the kindest person to work for despite his media antics at times.

R.I.P. to the game changer. Too young.

Good Lord, Aggies. Show some respect. At least quote the man correctly…….

“It's one of the greatest places to play on earth,” Leach said at SEC Media Days. “That stadium — when I was at Tech — that's one of the Carnegie Halls of football there. Kyle Field, first of all, is gigantic and holds a ton of people. The grass is impeccable. The Aggies are always highly motivated. It's a fun place to play. I've got some great memories of our games at Kyle Field over the years.

Then Leach offered up a bit of a parting shot. It was a fantastic experience,” Leach said. “It helped that we won most of them.”

The gift of aggy is that Leach is 100% patronizing their bullshit in those comments; and then they embrace it as some sort of endorsement.

If the gomers would lie about a General Patton quote, they'll do it for a rival coach.

RIP, Coach Leach

I know a guy who was a student manager when the Adam James incident occurred and actually saw it all go down. To this day, he hates Adam James and loves Mike Leach and said James was being a bitch that day and got treated like one.

He grew up a Mormon. He was not practicing as an adult, to my knowledge.

2006. Texas Tech overcame a 38-7 deficit in the Insight Bowl to beat Minnesota 44-41 in OT. Cost Glen Mason his job. He was fired 2 days later. Then Tim Brewster took over and he was a disaster.

I was watching this game at a Twin Cities sports bar. When the first drive of the 3rd quarter stalled and the Gophers kicked a FG to go up 38-7, everyone at my table looked at each other and said, at the same time, "This isn't enough." Sure as shit, it wasn't. Rumor has it that the president of the University ordered the firing on the way home from Phoenix. The firing was announced on New Years Eve, and I vaguely remember getting very drunk celebrating.

RIP ya pirate. College football is a much less fun place today.

If Vince Gill is available, a rendition of "Go Rest High " at Coach Leach's funeral would be both touching and a bit eerie.

SIAP but this story about Leach and his resemblance to Vince Gill is funny.

Quote

Mike Leach always had an eye for SEC talent — even when he was coaching in Division II. When he ran the offense for Hal Mumme at Valdosta State in the early 1990s, he kept driving two hours north on Interstate 75 because he had found a player at Peach County High in Fort Valley who moved like lightning with the ball in his hands. The guy was a little undersized, and Leach prayed this would keep the SEC and ACC schools off the scent.

Leach explained that when he went up that way to recruit, he would eat at the Hooters in Warner Robins. Back then, Vince Gill was one of the biggest names in country music. And back then, just as he does now, Mike Leach looked an awful lot like Vince Gill.

The staff at the Hooters thought Leach was Gill, and Leach never bothered to explain that he was a D-II coordinator trying to convince Jacquez Green to come play for him. If you recognize that name, you already know the bad news. Steve Spurrier and the Florida Gators caught the scent and scooped up Green, who drove right past Valdosta to Gainesville and became a star receiver. But there was one piece of good news — at least for one Middle Georgia hospitality industry worker. “There was a waitress who thought she had served Vince Gill a bunch of times,” Leach once told me.

This quote from the AD about playing the bowl game hits me in the feels:

"It's only fitting that we play this game and honor Coach Leach in a stadium that has a pirate ship," Brett said.

Yeah that’s pretty cool.

I’ll be betting on the bulldogs in that one for sure.
