Have a great game today MT !!! 🤘

Who votes on the Thorpe award? Time to get the Jahdae campaign in full gear

I’ll be the first to eat crow about Barron!! I deeply undervalued his football Smarts, instincts, and  awareness.

I was more so concerned with this speed more than anything and he showed it’s more than that.

im going to miss Barron so much man. What a dawg!!!

Thx for this @satyanash

Scipio Tex on Arky game

Linebacker

If there’s a nit to pick with the defense, it’s at LB. All of them struggled with Arkansas doubling our playside bigs in front of them and filling the hole with authority. Even when they met the running back one or two yards into the hole, Arkansas runners added another 2-3 yards of drag. Slow triggering and not bringing enough when they got there. If you read my postmortems, that’s a persistent theme since ULM and Mississippi State.

Lefau got caught in the wash too often and he wasn’t physical enough at the point of contact. He also flat out missed a couple of tackles coming late to the ball. Hill is still slow triggering when it’s coming right at him. As a counterpoint, I thought Hill was great in pass coverage against the talented Arkansas tight end and against the screen game. He’s a special athlete in space.

Defensive Back

Jahdae Barron was terrific.

A nice example of football IQ. Barron sees that he’s accounted for on the blitz outside and also that we’ve got contain handled, so he works inside to where he knows Green will step up and notches the sack. He also has a nice heads up pick playing over the top on a well thrown seam route that a bad Arky receiver bobbled.

Being around the ball results in good things and Texas had three defenders in close proximity to worry the receiver. #7 filled up the box score with 7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss (including a terrific 3rd and 3 backfield stop on a screen), a sack, two hurries (including on a 3rd and 10 on our 25) and the aforementioned interception. Barron was targeted 5 times in the passing game and surrendered only 19 yards on 3 catches.

Great timing on a PBU playing through the ball that forced the official to pick up his flag. No defender – other than perhaps Collins – made more WOW plays on Saturday than Barron. He absolutely dominated. Both Jelani McDonald and Guilbeau had some struggles on the edge containing Taylen Green. 6-6 guys with legit acceleration and big strides move differently than you expect at field level.

I think Texas fans have some sympathy for that. They combined for four missed tackles. Guilbeau also got hit for a 20 yard completion and a couple of short balls. Kobe Black got matched up with Andrew Armstrong on his six snaps and lost most of them. Armstrong hit him for 25 yards, Armstrong’s longest gain of the day. Manny Muhammad wasn’t physical enough in run support.

Taaffe was very active from deep safety, notching 8 tackles, including a decent blitz reroute into a tackle for loss. #16 doesn’t get thrown at a lot, in part because he’s so good at anticipating routes and cutting off the option before it materializes. Mukuba had a clutch tackle for loss on a Green keeper.

It’s hard to fathom how utterly shit we were in the defensive backfield last year and how stellar we are this year.

Arguably our strongest position group on the team.

Mukuba has definitely helped our defense 🤘

messed up

Jahdae Barron is a finalist for the Thorpe Award.

Caleb Downs is probably the favourite to win, but Barron's had an exceptional year.

I’m not sure if this is even a bit, but in no world is Caleb downs the favorite to win the Thorpe over jahdae Barron

The only threat isn’t even a finalist even though he’s probably the gonna challenge to win the Heisman. (Travis Hunter)

The South Carolina guy would have also made it interesting.

Downs has given up just 124 yards in coverage this year, and blanketed Penn State's Tyler Warren on a national stage. It's going to be difficult for Barron to overcome that.

Barron picked off Carson Beck twice on a national stage, not to mention all of the other big time plays made this year.

It’s going to be difficult for anyone to overcome that.

Today heard Saban with a great quote:

"The Corners put  the limitations on your defense"

No doubt one of the keys to PK's 2024 defensive success has been Jahdae and Manny's great play at corner...

Sure hope both get recognition and post-season awards that they deserve!!!

Gonna miss Mukuba, Barron and Taffee so much man!! We at least owe it to them to get this Offensive shit show figured out and make a deep run.

As Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian likes to say, individual accolades came as a result of team success and that holds true for Barron, as his school bio bears out:

Quote

Barron has proven to be one of the nation’s elite defensive players this season. A fifth-year defensive back, he has played in 54 career games with 36 starts. Following Texas’ 20-10 road win at Arkansas on Nov. 16, Barron was recognized as the Thorpe Award’s National Player of the Week, the SEC’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week and the Reese’s Senior Bowl’s Defensive Player of the Week. Prior to the 2024 season, he was named preseason second-team All-SEC on defense and selected to the preseason watch lists for the Bronko Nagurksi Trophy and Bednarik Award. Barron is one of the most versatile defensive backs in the nation, consistently playing multiple positions in the Texas defensive backfield, while providing leadership as a fifth-year veteran. Through 13 games, the Austin, Texas, native leads the Longhorns in interceptions (5) and pass break-ups (9) to go along with 47 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one quarterback hurry and one forced fumble. Barron paces the SEC and ranks third in the FBS in total interceptions this season.

The Austin, Texas, native plays an integral role in a dominant Texas defense that leads the FBS in several categories, including turnovers gained (28) and passing yards allowed (143.1 ypg). In addition, Texas ranks No. 2 in the FBS in scoring defense (12.5 ppg) and team passing efficiency defense (95.19) while sitting third in passes intercepted (19) and total defense (249.5 ypg). The Horns also rank fifth nationally in first down defense (196), sixth in third-down conversion percentage defense (30.6 percent), seventh in red zone defense (71.4 percent), 12th in team tackles for loss (7.3) and 15th in rushing defense (106.4).The Longhorns have given up just four passing touchdowns through 13 games, which ties for the fewest in the FBS and shares the program’s single-season record for fewest passing touchdowns surrendered in a season (1972). UT shut out opponents in the first half in three of the last four games to cap the regular season – all conference opponents.

UT also leads the nation in opponent passing yards per attempt, limiting opposing teams to just 5.10 yards per attempt. Texas is also the only team in the FBS to hold opponents to under nine yards per completion (8.61). The Longhorns have forced at least one turnover in 21-consecutive games, including eight-straight games forcing multiple turnovers.

I guess it wasn't too hard to overcome Down's play against Pedo state. Hope Satya is alright.

I asked this on the PK thread but it's more appropriate here.

So...with how the D and especially the secondary played this year and with Barron winning the Thorpe, who's responsible? Up until this year, the secondary was a huge liability and, deservingly so, we had been bitching about Gideon and Joseph. With this year's drastic improvement and success, Is it because Gideon and Joseph finally got their shit together? Was Mukuba the missing piece? Is it Nansen?

Likely a few things @crash_davis

  • Great CB play Jahdae & Manny
  • Experience of Taaffe tying it together
  • Glue of Makuba
  • Better pass rush especially DE's
  • Nansen connecting coverages better between LBs and secondary

Jahdae Barron, Andrew Mukuba & MIchael Taaffe on Ohio State Matchup!

  • 3 weeks later...

I wonder if our whiffs at off the ball outside linebacker in the ‘25 class may influence a spin down of Jelani McDonald. Not permanently, but in obvious passing downs. He’ll probably play closer to 215-220lbs by September. Right now it’s Hill, Lefau, Smith, and then the two freshman. Unless the Arkansas LB is playing off the ball.
