Cross-posting from the Abbott thread, the "informed speculation" I heard at the event I was at last week--to which you were invited but you did not show (shame on you, by the way)--was exactly this.

Indeed, shame on me. Wish I had made it.

So according to my informant, when the filing deadline comes in December, Ken Paxton is not going to have filed to run for U.S. Senate against John Cornyn; he will have filed to run for governor against Greg Abbott.

That would be huge.

Now, I've got to tell you--that last bit doesn't make any sense to me.  Greg Abbott has a $100M war chest.  And he's probably the most popular Republican in Texas.

I’m not sure that’s true. It’s like DeSantis 2 years ago: Abbott isn’t the most popular Republican in Texas, he’s the most popular Texas Republican in the country, which is different.  Donald Trump is the most popular Republican in Texas.

Here's a hint - if you vote for someone, you support them.  Whether it's Paxton, Abbott, Trump, Cruz, your vote says you support their actions.

I'm sorry--you're right.  I was imprecise in my statement.  He's the most popular Republican holding state office in Texas (and I include Cornyn, Cruz, and the various MOCs in that).

That’s the thing- when I talk to MAGA people I get the sense that they see Abbott for what he is- a typical political shapeshifter and not real MAGA.

Which is what makes him an even MORE pathetic creature than is immediately apparent.

He has so debased and degraded himself, so groveled and shamelessly kowtowed to an ideology that he is smart enough to KNOW is intellectually and morally bankrupt......and FOR WHAT?  They are never going to love you, Greg.  Trump is never going to appoint you to anything.  You are never holding any other office, you are never gaining any additional power.  You sold your soul, you sold your state, and everyone in it.....for fucking NOTHING.

What a waste of a life.  What a horrible coda.  History will speak of you, likely through the rubble and ashes of this once great nation, as a cowardly collaborator who didn't even get power in return.  How pathetic.  And what's even more pathetic is that he's smart enough to know that every word I typed is true, he's just too much of a coward to ever seize the moment and change course.  What.  A fucking.  LOSER.

There's a reason why MAGA doesn't see Abbott as real MAGA.

MAGA may accept their politicians to be handicapped but they prefer ones who can walk.

ETA:  These two fat fucks.
