Strong to quite strong resume:

Coaching career

After graduating from Randolph–Macon in 1995, Bateman went to work for a company that sold paper machinery. He got into coaching when the owner sold the company, working as an assistant coach at Benedictine High School in Richmond.[1] He got his first job in the college ranks at Hampden–Sydney College in 1997 as a graduate assistant, working with the defensive line and linebackers. He was named the defensive coordinator at Siena College in New York in 1999, and was promoted to head coach in 2000. At the time of his promotion, he was said to be the youngest head coach in Division I football at 26.[2] After the football program was shut down in 2003, he joined the coaching staff at Richmond in 2004 as their assistant secondary coach, on a coaching staff that had future college and NFL assistants, such as Mike Elko, Patrick Graham, and Marcus Satterfield. He also had assistant coaching stints under Pete Lembo at Lehigh, Elon, and Ball State.[3]

Army

Bateman was named the defensive coordinator at Army in 2014. He was suspended in 2017 when it was revealed that he had received improper information from former Wake Forest radio announcer Tommy Elrod.[4] In addition to the suspension, he was also fined $25,000 and forced to attend an ethics training program.[5]

Bateman was named a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2018, the award given to the top assistant coach in college football.[6] In his tenure with Army, he improved the Black Knights defense from 91st overall in 2014 to 8th in the country in 2018.[7]

North Carolina

Bateman was named the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at North Carolina on December 9, 2018.[8] He and co-coordinator Tommy Thigpen oversaw the position change and development of former quarterback Chazz Surratt into an all-conference linebacker and NFL draftee and brought in several top defensive recruits to the program, being a key player in the Tar Heels' recruiting upswing. After three years leading the Tar Heel defense, Bateman and UNC agreed to part ways after the 2021 season, which featured the worst defensive unit of his tenure.[9]

Florida

In January 2022, Bateman joined Billy Napier's staff at Florida as the inside linebackers coach. [lulz]

The same Jay Bateman  who was the primary defensive play caller for a UNC defense that finished 105th nationally in points allowed and 94th in yards allowed in his last stint as a DC? That Jay Bateman? Interesting. Guess 2 years of coaching the vaunted Florida Gators Linebackers was enough to wash that stink off.

They really set a blowtorch to their relationship with Elijah Robinson for a chance to hire JAY BATEMAN.

My only regret is we never got to see Sweat and Murphy absolutely destroy Bryce Foster & Co

Every single fucking time I dont think the aggy destruction can get funnier and then they hired a dude who worked at Dunder Mifflin. Holy fuck this is hilarious

THIS is who they were excited to grab? a bunch of dudes from Billy Napier's staff? lol

also if you want a chuckle he was an assistant in like 05 with Elko. so technically not a hire from truly outside of his circle

I think Looch shot down Brian Baker last night, if I'm interpreting this correctly. I'm not fluent in aggy.

The thing to remember with Loochie is that he does know things, but he will gladly shovel misinformation if it advances the cause. All Aggie writers are alums and recruiters for their program. There is no objectivity whatsoever.

Now we know that the real reason they waited was to sign as many guys yesterday as possible before pulling the pin on this grenade.

Looks like Elko and Bateman coached together for one year at Richmond in 2004?

Mack could not run Bateman out of town fast enough after the 2021 season. UNC was horrible defensively. Gave up over 6 yards a play and 425+ yards per game.

I don’t know what’s funnier, taking a month to hire a total JAG like Jay Bateman as the DC or Elko making his entire staff be carryovers from Duke plus raiding one of the worst coaching staffs in all of college football. Oh, and hiring an equipment manager from Nebraska to be your TE coach because he’s  buddies with the OC you supposedly hired but still appears to be working for KSU.

This is honestly better than fiction.

Also, does the dad even follow college football?  This kid could fake commit *anywhere* right now, hell he could "commit" to the fucking Philadelphia Eagles, and they choose... aggy?

Nah, they’ve been paying attention. They chose the one place that is actually desperate enough to accept his commitment. Hell, The Elk is probably looking into getting him reclassified as a 2024 recruit as we speak.

Angry Gary Oldman GIF

Yeah, this is grim. And terrific.
They're going to have to take all kinds of bread in both the portal and, maybe?, the second signing period in order to fill holes on the depth chart. I cannot believe they don't have assistants. I cannot believe they are short on funds. I cannot that Melko is this weak at recruiting. I know "it's aggie" and such, but holy shit.
The other thing about their roster and class is that Liucci and his cronies, as well as the 247 guys, continue to warn that more guys might defect after the bowl game when Robinson leaves. This keeps getting better and better.

I am still trying to process this. I am 57 years old and have enjoyed a lifetime of Aggy incompetence, save and except the Jackie FedEx days and the Johnnie Football blip.

But their current state is an entire historical legacy of bumbfuckelry all rolled up into a few short weeks.

Truly amazing….

It keeps getting better...

The 2004 Richmond Spiders football team represented the University of Richmond during the 2004 NCAA Division I-AA football season. Richmond competed as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10), and played their home games at the University of Richmond Stadium.

The Spiders were led by first-year head coach Dave Clawson, who was previously head coach at Fordham University. Richmond finished the regular season with a 3–8 overall record and 2–6 record in conference play.

Mack had to call up ole Squareface McBlockhead to come out of retirement and fix the mess that Batemen created at North Carolina.

Florida fans seem sad to lose him as a recruiter but I don't buy that he's remotely close to as good of a rainmaker as what Robinson has been

It's who they can afford. They did not have the money to fire Jimbo and hire a good staff.

The new aggy DC

The Elk's staff is bringing back memories of Strong/Herman type hires.

aggy logic: "hiring sitting natty corches and big names didn't work for us, so clearly hiring a bunch of fucking nobodies and scrubs means dynasty bitches!!!"

This is basically identical to Venables choosing to hire Ted Roof as his DC.

Hopefully Elko makes the same mistake as Venables and lets Bateman actually run the defense in year 1.

Not quite. Elko/Bjork have yet to reach the towering heights of 27-25 and 77-0. I think they can get there.
