What the fuck is Charlotte doing?  Holy cow...

It seemed like in hindsight that Hayward wanted to go back to Indiana, but Ainge asked for too much for a S&T.  I thought the Knicks might be the one to overpay, but Charlotte...

If you are competing with the Knicks for a FA, there's your sign..

You mean Draymond actually recruiting KD for a whole season?   Sure.

Does Draymond have a sports agency? Was KD represented by said sports agency?

Yeah, Ainge gonna get roasted in Bean-Town

  • Gordon Hayward has opted out of his Celtics contract. The question is, what happens now?
  • If Hayward signs out-right with another team, Danny Ainge is going to have egg on his face. With Kyrie Irving, Al Horford and now possibly Hayward leaving without a sign and trade, the Celtics — a contending team just lacking a major piece or two the past couple of years — will have watched a significant amount of cap space leave out the door and no way to match it.
  • There's little doubt that has adversely affected this team, and if Hayward signs out-right, it's going to be a huge blow to next year's team. I don't know how you spin that as a positive. Ainge's plans keep blowing up in his face and he's been left with a team that's good, but not good enough. 2021 will be the same.

Just wait until Coach K retires and Stevens tires of Ainge's bullshit and takes the Duke job.

So tampering is cool as long as you arent tight with your agent?

Tampering is cool as long as Lebron gets fucked over.

It's a players advocacy issue and takes away power from the players (ironically) and can fuck up future CBAs when you have guys renouncing* money for a chance to play where they want.

I have no issue with it from a basketball standpoint - and these guys are of course well within their rights to play where they want (which had been an issue for a long time) - but in the past I know that the NBAPA has not been fond of it as it keeps more money in the pockets of owners and can hurt contract negotiations.

The power of the purple and gold can overwhelm a player’s ability to think rationally.  It has mystical powers we may never fully understand.

Right, that is why they were losing every FA worth a shit prior to Lebron.

Nah, tampering sucks in all forms. But it’s a little bit more than being tight with your agent in Lebron’s case. They’re best friends and that’s essentially Lebron’s agency too. But you already know this.

I cant imagine him getting more than about 14/yr and that would more than likely be on a crappy team as those were the only ones with money this yr.  Look at the guys that cashed in and where they signed.   He has a 1+1 so he can be a UFA next season and cash in while going to a team with a chance to win a title.   This isnt that.   I know guys hate LBJ and much of anything he does but let's try and look at this rationally.

Exactly, people behave as though this is the first time in history an agent ( NBA agent at that) has manipulated things to the benefit of his/her most high profile client.

Actually, given the 2021 draft (which is loaded with franchise talents), signing Heyward is even more egregious.

This is NOT the year to be chasing a few more wins to sneak into the playoffs.

The issue for Charlotte is getting any free agents to sign there.  They got their shot and they decided to take it.  I'm not a huge Hayward fan for the max, but it's like the Kings signing Fox to the possible supermax.  Small market teams lacking talent because of years of bad drafting and contracts often have to continue to overspend.  They do have Zeller coming off next year along with Monk (another wasted pick) so they'll still have a lot of cap room but man, I would have done something to try and move Batum's contract.  I assume they called everyone and couldn't though.

Both ends of that deal have major questions to ask..... Charlotte but really Boston who has seen Kyrie, Horford, and now Hayward sign and then leave without anything in return.  They're left with Tatum, Brown and Kemba on Supermax's or close.  Yuck.

You mean the power of LeBron. It's going to be funny when you're irrelevant for another 10 years after he leaves.

And a couple more championships.

So I guess the rumored trade for Blake Griffin in return for the Plumlee and Grant signing was fictitious?!?!?

Psssh. You ain't tearing down this brick wall in 2021. You wish you had all the project combo guards and aging borderline superstars that we do.

Some random thoughts

- Portis seems a bit redundant to Brook Lopez for Milwaukee. I guess he's a decent stretch 4 and space creator. Augustine signing is reasonable. He's about as productive as playoff Bledsoe for like 20% of the price. IMO they should have gone for 3 and D, but I guess those guys don't grow on trees.

- Bad teams always bringing the off-season lulz. That Hayward contract is awful. Rondo makes zero sense for Atlanta. Do they think that playoff Rondo is going to put them over the top in their drive to win a ring next year? He's one of the last veterans I'd ever want mentoring the young guys on my squad. Lazy and caustic. Stupid signing.

- I like Harrell on the Lakers. Sticking with their philosophy of length and bully ball. Dwight leaving LA makes their probable repeat next year slightly less offensive.

- Crowder leaving Miami will hurt them more than a lot of people realize. I've always thought him to be underrated.

- I actually think the FVV contract is reasonable. He's a better piece than Gordon fuckin Heyward who just got 30 per. $21 million AAV for a "almost an all star" player entering his prime. FVV is every bit as good as Khris Middleton who makes 35 per. He got paid about fair market value, IMO.

- The Klay injury really fucking sucks. A resurgent Warriors returning to try to get the throne back from the manufactured superteam Lakers, with their long time rival in LeBron once again on the other side of the court. Every basketball fan was robbed of a great story line there.

- Why hasn't Giannis signed the supermax yet? [emoji102]

Man, the suns could be a sleeper to do some damage next year. cp3, booker, ayton, Crowder. That's a pretty strong two-way squad that has some coherency in its makeup. It wouldn't shock me to see them get a top 4 seed next year.

For a team with no bigs like the C's

Yeah by their logic I'm surprised he didnt sign a vet min deal with the Lakers.

I mean, he is a warm body. But let's not pretend he's a difference maker.

Considering the length and his age and injury history, that Hayward contract is easily the worst in the league.

When can Giannis sign the 5yr? I believe the date is still a few days away (Nov 24th?? maybe??).

I dont know enough minutia about the cap, but according to this guy Milwaukee's GM is laughably amateurish in his maneuvering around the cap.

So far the off-season has been pretty good for the Purple and Gold. Bringing Pope back was a really nice move. He basically did what Green did not and now he more/less fills that salary slot. I am glad for Rondo and that he got one last good contract. I imagine he will get traded at the deadline to a contender. Hopefully it is someone in the East. When he does retire I think he can become a very good coach because there is no player in the league that understands the game better than he does.

Had to do some work to complete this deal according to early article...

The dollars and sense behind Lakers’ attempt to re-sign Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Both the Lakers and free-agent Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who opted out of the final year of his contract, have interest in the veteran guard re-signing with the team.

No guarantee it gets done for a few reasons.  First, the New York Knicks also have interest in Caldwell-Pope, according to people not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.  Second, Caldwell-Pope is looking for a raise from the original deal that would have paid him $8.4 million next season.  Finally, after the Lakers agreed to give free-agent center Montrezl Harrell the full midlevel exception and free-agent guard Wesley Matthews the biannual exception when free agency opened Friday afternoon, they are limited in how much they can offer Caldwell-Pope.

The most the Lakers can offer Caldwell-Pope is about $12 million per season, but that could increase if they trade one of their players to a team with salary-cap space and don’t receive a player back.

According to Larry Coon, considered an expert on the NBA collective bargaining agreement, the Lakers can’t go above the hard salary cap of about $136.6 million, and that prohibits the Lakers from offering Caldwell-Pope more than $12 million despite holding his Larry Bird Rights.

He turned down a 4 year $70m offer from the Mavs in 2017 because he wanted a max offer. Mavs said no. So instead, Nerlens made around $15m over those 4 years.

So would Atlanta be anywhere close to a top 5 team in the East with BB??

I don't understand signing both Rondo and Dunn. Unless you want Young to play more off the ball in certain lineups. It's not like Dunn is actually good at either side of the equation and he also brings with him shitty shooting from BTA. Though it does appear he made small strides offensively last season.

I also don't understand the Gallinari signing when you have Hunter, Reddish, and Collins at the 3/4 spot. Bogdanovic fills a need as a starting SG.

It appears Atlanta has a lot of shooting.

They should be pretty close.    They've made some nice moves.

Trae

Bogdan

Gallinari

Collins

Capela

with Rondo and Dunn off the bench is a decent roster.

EDIT: Forgot about Reddish and Hunter

Oh yeah Heuter too.   They needed talent.   They have upgraded significantly in that respect.   Figure out the rotations and how it all works together later.

They're like Suns East. I could see them maybe snagging the 5 or 6 seed if they overachieve and have some injuries fall the right way on other teams.

They are still firmly below the top 6 on paper, though: BKN, MIL, PHI, MIA, BOS, TOR
