At this point, there has to be enough people to vote against gov wheels that he’s out, right??

No, because as bad as Abbott is, the Democrats want to destroy life as we know it and eat all the babies as a victory dessert.

I think he's right there is bi-partisan majority support for gun control (i.e., the 4 items he noted).  How the fuck can't we get it done.  Does the NRA really have Republican's by the balls?  Is that it?  I don't get it.

A straight middle-aged white dude looking around at awful the Republican party is and being surprised. Dude - it's been this bad for years, you're just now seeing.

Can't own the libs if you work with them

That was a pretty stellar 5 minute rant by Beto.  I mean, he has my vote by default, given the alternative, but he might be a little more astute than I gave him credit for.

It was the same thing he's been doing since 2016.  He's good at it because he truly believes it.

isn't.... isn't that what you want out of a politician? to actually believe in the same causes you do and fight for them? am I missing something here?

Yes, that would be ideal.  Hence why Beto has a lot of support.  Not enough support because this state sucks.  But a lot of support.

No. The NRA is damned near broke now and doesn't have near the pull it used to. The Republican base just loves guns to a fanatical degree and would probably kill their own politicians if they voted to make gun laws even the tiniest bit stricter. Also, most Republican officials are indistinguishable from their base these days and feels the same way about guns as their voters do.

I love free-wheeling Beto - the problem is that somewhere in there, there will inevitably be a 5-second sound bite that Fox News will take out of context and bludgeon him politically to death with.  See the "Hell, yes. We're going to take your AR-15" debacle.  Disregard the fact that the position was imminently reasonable in the context of the discussion (see below), especially immediately after El Paso.  We can thank the 5-second attention span of the average U.S. voter today, though - just the way the GQP likes it..

“If the high-impact, high-velocity round, when it hits your body, shreds everything inside of your body, because it was designed to do that, so you would bleed to death on a battlefield. Not be able to get up and kill one of our soldiers,” O’Rourke said.

“When we see that being used against children. And in Odessa, I met the mother of a 15-year-old girl who was shot by an AR-15. And that mother watched her bleed to death over the course of an hour, because so many other people were shot by an AR-15 in Odessa and Midland, there weren’t enough ambulances to get to them in time. Hell yes. We’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used against fellow Americans anymore.”

Don't answer that.

I mean yes. They have for years. Throw in some funneling of foreign money into pub campaigns and you can see why they have their thumb on every member of that party.

Rolling the tape back, Abbott wouldn’t even look Beto in the eye. He just started fumbling with his notes and frantically turning pages.

Beto would absolutely destroy Abbott in a debate. Too bad Abbott will refuse to debate him.

Republican gun nuts in Texas vote. Its damn near a religion. Thats what Abbot, Cruz and the rest of these shitstains know. If they were certain that their "no gun control whatsoever " stance would cost them their next election, I guarantee you would see their stance change. It will only change when enough people that vote republican or dont vote at all decide they want to see things change. Everything else is just theatre.

Beto said it himself. If we continue to accept this, than it is on us. If border walls, and lower taxes, and no CRT, etc.... is more important to Texans than fixing our fucked up gun laws and stopping kids from getting slaughtered in class, its our collective fault. We reward/punish politicians with our vote. And the people of Texas are going to reward the GOP for their current policy by electing them again.

I can't really find anything about the election, but I believe this is Garza, a historic figure in Uvalde: https://voces.lib.utexas.edu/collections/stories/josué-george-garza

McLaughlin opted to endorse former Republican state Sen. Don Huffines in the recent Texas primary for governor. He did not endorse Abbott, who he called a "fraud" on the website "The Texan."

He has also had issues with Republican Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, telling Tucker Carlson: "I can’t get my own senators to call me back — as an elected official, I cannot get a callback.,”

It burns my soul in a way politics can rarely do the degree that those guys (Abbott, Cornyn, and Cruz) openly don't give a fuck about this state and its citizens and yet receive no punishment for it.  Hopefully in the hereafter they will get what's coming.

Edited by Starfleet Command

fuck yeah beto!  it's beyond time that someone literally stands up to these assholes and calls them on their bullshit straight to their face.  there is no fucking diplomacy when it comes to kids getting massacred in their classrooms.  either you want to do something about it or you don't.  if you don't you can fuck right off and have your little "thought and prayers" press conference disrupted and overshadowed.

lol, nah. that ain't happening either. but maybe future generations will piss on their graves - assuming they can go outside because the air isn't too toxic.

I agree its a powerful image. We'll probably be seeing it for awhile as it parallels the political realities in this state as it relates to gun control. basically the status quo telling those seeking a change....."GTFO!"

too bad nobody would watch it.

I hope Biden doesn’t meet with the mayor down there. He will try to be diplomatic and the mayor will do everything he can to make it a very bad situation. Dems do not learn about how to handle the far right. Schumer is still acting like a huge pussy. Someone needs to stand up. Beto unfortunately will lose vote after today but at least he acted like he had a spine.

Everyone here knows the following to be true:

In Texas, we are more likely to see legislative action REQUIRING all Texans to carry an AR than we are to see any legislation making gun laws "even the tiniest bit stricter."

That's how fucking broken we are.

So, Abbott points to mental health and nobody asks what he has done to address mental health, since Santa Fe? He will probably point to covid funds provided to HHS. Or, will he point to the $200 million he took from HHS for the border political ruse?
