Abbott, Perry?  WhyNotBoth.gif?

It's interesting thinking about Perry - you almost always knew that any big proposals he had, it was going to benefit his biggest donors, and in theory, they actually would benefit a helluva lot of Texans.

In August of 2001, when Perry pitched an open border with Mexico at a speech with Vincente Fox at the border, and talked about Texas and Mexico working on an integrated healthcare system as well as educational systems, and raising the standard of living on both sides of the border, it was like "holy fuck, Perry went back to being the Democrat that he was in the 1980s when he ran Al Gore's campaign in Texas!"  It was pretty fucking progressive.  Of course, it was going to benefit Perry's biggest donors, which were developers who relied on plentiful and cheap labor.  In theory though, if the standard of living went up in Mexico, it might have scaled illegal immigration back a bit.  Still, it was about Perry's donors.  Then 9/11 happened, and that speech was scrubbed from the Texas Governor's website for a while.

When Perry was pushing the Trans-Texas Corridor, and linking it with Mexico's rail systems and ports, and that it would jump-start an integrated transit system from Mexican ports on the Pacific all the way to the Great Lakes (and into Canada), you're like "wow, that might have brought a lot of jobs and lowered a lot of costs for goods" but it was going to, again, benefit Perry's donors.  It was also going to take business away from California ports since offloading in Mexico and dumping it on rail there and running it on up the middle of America (reducing costs).  But in theory, it had some good parts (lots of Texans would get fucked with imminent domain though).  Again, Perry's donors.

When Perry was pushing a guest-worker program with Mexico/Central/South America in 2006 (along with George W., McCain, etc.), it sounded progressive, but also it was touted as a national security issue, like "okay, we'll get a handle on who is actually here illegally, and we'll get them in the system so that they are documented, and get them paying taxes", but again, it was all about Perry's largest donors (Bob Perry, HEB/Butts, etc.) and making it easier for construction and agricultural companies to get cheap workers in legally.  But still, it would legitimize people here illegally, and even afford them some protection they don't have when everything is under the table with them.  But, Perry's donors.

The thing is, you always knew mostly why Perry was pushing something big like those projects, and there was logic to them, even if you didn't agree with them, because Perry was a politician who would at least try and occasionally sell those projects and ideas to both sides of the political spectrum.

Abbott?  Fucking A.  He's pushing shit that is meant to appeal to the dumbest fucking people with the least amount of education and common sense, because he's fucking desperate to get noticed nationally, and he's willing to openly try and hurt Texans in the process.  He's down by several touchdowns in the 4th quarter and every pass he's throwing is a Hail Mary into the end zone because he's old and he's watching DeSantis, a law school grad as well, but who is 20 years younger than him, with a lot fewer accomplishments to his name, scoring on almost every possession.

Abbott does not bother trying to come up with projects or solutions that he could at least pretend would benefit all Texans.  Nope, he's firmly chasing down the dumbest fucking people and trying to make them like him instead of DeSantis or Trump, and he's putting a lot of effort into shit that hurts Texans, because he cares more about dumshit MAGA in other states more than the liberals here in Texas.

You'd think that Abbott has reached an age where he'd give a shit about how history is going to view him.  He's been a Texas Supreme Court Justice, Texas Attorney General, and Texas Governor.  Those all, on their own, are impressive achievements (well, having an (R) next to his name did 75% of the work, but he still had to win primaries).

You'd think that he'd be focusing on projects that would benefit all Texans, and would leave him with some kind of legacy that Texans might care about.  Shit that would make Texans in the future want to name schools and streets after him, etc.

Instead, he's trashing whatever reputation he has and is chasing down Trumpanzees, including many outside of Texas, who only know how to shit in their hands and fling it around.  He's chasing Republicans who are more interested in Trump or DeSantis, and he's doing nothing that would give them a reason to give a shit about him and vote for him in a primary.  Just as bad,  he's shitting all over Democrats in Texas and giving them reasons to show up and vote against Republicans, and potentially flipping the state sooner than it would otherwise.

And he fucks up the simplest things, whether it was Uvalde or promising to pardon a white supremacist who had been looking to kill some people, and who killed a military veteran who actually was standing his own ground.

In theory, it might only take one getting its shit together, and Abbott has them in his sights.

But the other big cities could step up and finish things off faster.

Ahh the good old days of Rick Perry getting caught on a hot mic (and camera) telling a reporter from ABC 13 "Adios, MOFO" and puling the "do you know who I am?" after getting stopped by a state trooper for a traffic ticket. Kinda like George W (both as Governor and President) he's weirdly aged well with the benefit of hindsight of seeing how bad of people can get elected after them...

As someone who tests as Slytherin on all the quizzes my wife and kids have administered, I resent that characterization. Slytherins are clever, strategic thinkers who get shit done. Not simps to bow tie-wearing candyasses like Tucker Carlson.

He'd be just as bad and we all know it. He just didn't have to go full MAGA because he got his spot in the cabinet, curled up in a ball, and just let it pass.

Remember this bit of performance for the cameras?

Perry cared more about his donors than the people that Abbott so desperately wants to like him.

Also, Perry is considering running for President next year.

Abbott is threatening to veto the school bill and start calling special sessions if he doesn't get his voucher bullshit.

Once again, he's chasing the MAGA crowd who give no fucks about him, and not realizing that he's going to piss off rural legislators who don't want vouchers, because you know, they aren't building for-profit private schools in Butt Fuck, Texas.

Nevermind that it's literally against the state constitution to take away free and first class public education.

By all means, let's waste resources by calling a special session for the extremely important task of dismantling public education.

This could be a fight that embarrasses him, because he's going to piss off the rural legislators.  Actually, he has pissed them off, as evidenced by it already being shot down.

Everybody in the legislature knows he's chasing DeSantis, and it's fucking sad and pathetic that Abbott somehow thinks he could even sniff second place in next year's primaries in Texas.

It's like he took a blow to the head recently and lost all sense of self-awareness, and nobody around him is willing to tell him that he's looking as sad and pathetic as he is.

I hope he keeps pushing for vouchers because it will never pass and it takes up time that the Leg could be spending on more dangerous fuckery.  That he thinks he has a shot in hell in getting it is pretty damning evidence that he has a terrible political IQ.

Well, when the Communist Democrats won't let you divert taxpayers' funds to your donors' private enterprises, you need more government to fix the problem.

So Abbott's position is that Dominion has treated Fox, and Tucker Carlson, unfairly? Do I have that right?

Not much from what I can tell.  We already have an accreditor-driven five-year review thing that requires a minimum level of publications/conferences/etc (that is college-specific, but I wouldn't be surprised if other accrediting agencies do the same for other disciplines), and I do know a guy who got called into the dean's office for missing classes, and he was told that he'd be fired if it continued.

Bwahahahahaha! The Great State of Texas is now stealing ideas from little old Oklahoma. Gov. Shitt has been doing this for weeks now. Even vetoed a bill to allow Native American students to wear tribal regalia at graduation ceremonies. It has one nay vote in the legislature, so I guess it'll get overridden.  He also vetoed an NIL bill, whoda thunk that even fucking with the sacred cow of ou football wouldn't move the needle with our dipshit voters. These fucking people. When Texas secedes I bet Oklahoma joins them, and OU and Texas can just play each other a dozen times and declare a champion.

Tuned in to some of the education hearings going on now and you can tell the legislators taking part are pissed at Abbott for basically turning their hearing into a meaningless task since he's already said he's not going to allow it since they legislated out what he wants. He's losing his own party in his own state over an issue they told him not to run on.

Imagine being such an insufferable prick that you lick the boots (wheels?) of Abbott over school vouchers.

Thousands of people, elected and staff and volunteers, are going to miss a chunk of their summer with family so this shitheap can try to chase down Ron DeSantis to see who can fuck up first and have to suck Trump's ballsack.  Wonderful.

One of those staff members has told me that rumor is Abbott isn't going to call a special session on School Vouchers till September for fear of thousands of teachers who have nothing better to do descending on the capitol for a summer special session.

Except that most do have other things to do, since they are paid so poorly they have to take on summer jobs (my daughter included--no pics).

Yeah, I get the empathy, but if you sign up for politics, even peripherally, then you should expect some jackassery now and again.

I get it.  Anybody that lives in Austin just accidentally knows people who work at the Capitol.  And in sessions past, even if I disagreed with the agenda, there really is just shit they didn't get to and have to press on through the summer/autumn.  Politics aside, it's a big state with a big budget and days of the week are what they are.

But any special session now, this year, this cycle.  It's just performative theater to boost Greg's hollow ego chase down DeSantis and other also-rans to make him seem like a viable option for FCOA/SCOTUS or Cabinet.  I'd respect it more if the play were purely for governor re-election, fundraising, or debasing the base.

Don't forget vetoing funding for PBS because the Republican supermajority lege told him to fuck off with his own school voucher program. They can wallpaper over it and try to claim it as "woke," but it's really just naked political retaliation, albeit his constituents are the ones who get to suffer through this shit.

I tell myself Oklahoma has a chance because it is sparsely populated, incredibly poor in most places, and come the next election, we will have gone through 16 years of conservative utopia (though they continue to bitch) with nothing tangible to show for it. Time to try something different.

I also have a medical card and am well aware of the delusion involved with this line of thinking, so YMMV.
