This is how Texas legislators want to spend their summer

https://www.kxan.com/news/texas-politics/gov-greg-abbott-announces-second-special-session-to-focus-on-property-tax-plan/

On Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Special Session No. 2, calling lawmakers back to the Texas Capitol “to provide lasting property tax cuts for Texans,” according to a press release.

The special session begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The Texas House and Senate approved separate property tax plans but didn’t come to an agreement during the first special session.

Yes Greg, keep on calling special sessions until you get what you want.

“Unless and until the House and Senate agree on a different proposal to provide property tax cuts, I will continue to call for lasting property tax cuts through rate reductions and working toward eliminating the school property tax in Texas. Special sessions will continue to focus on only property tax cuts until property tax cut legislation reaches my desk,” Abbott wrote in the release.

Wait, aren't schools pretty much 100% funded by property taxes?  Forgive me for not paying attention to what he's been saying but how is this

anything but an admission that he's trying to kill public schools?  Money's gotta come from somewhere if we're going to have schools and no school property tax. What's his alternative?

He doesn't have one.  Which is why he's somehow managed to make Dan Patrick appear to be reasonable in this fight.  No one wants it, but he keeps pushing for it.  He's going to piss off most of his own party over this.

This.  What Abbott is demanding has pretty much everyone scratching their heads.  He's said some magic words about the revenue coming from other sources, but he hasn't backed it up with anything but magical thinking.  It actually is kinda puzzling.  When your right-wing loony ideas even have DAN FUCKING PATRICK scratching his head and asking "WTF?", you've gone beyond off the deep end.

He is pissing off his party.  They have better things to be doing with their summers (and better places to be).  Why he's chosen this hill to die on is very strange, because there are better ones in terms of making a name on the national stage.  He so desperately wants to get noticed, but Republicans outside of Texas are going to look at this stuff and be confused as fuck.

It's all about the W.  Abbott is desperate to get a W.

So is she going to run for Governor or Senator?

Yes.  It will be a combined office.  Which she will win with minimal effort.  Because this timeline.

It’s amazing how truly dysfunctional the Republican Party is in Texas when trying to actually govern as compared to hurting people they don’t like. Everyone wants some version of property tax reform including homeowners, businesses, renters, etc. Everyone agrees that reform is needed and Texas has a massive surplus to spend. If Abbott, Phelan and Patrick weren’t crazy, they would get in a room and meet in the middle giving everyone a taste of what they want and no one would get everything.

It’s actually not complicated but the individual personalities have created an atmosphere where the various factions within the Texas Republican Party can’t negotiate with each other anymore.

Because the only platform of the GQP is “be batshit crazy and mean.” That’s fundamentally incompatible with “governing.” And the platform will ultimately win out.

And apparently they convened or whatever today after each chamber voted on the plans they had previously voted on, which means nothing happened, and Abbott is just going to get angrier, because that's what small men do when people won't do what they tell them to.

Maybe one of his aides will take him aside and explain to him that the legislature is a branch of the government, and he can't just tell them what to do.  Just kidding, his aides don't give a fuck either way and he wouldn't listen either.

Should turn it into a commercial if she tries to run for state or federal office.

Abbott is as stupid as his base (who will still vote for Trump or DeSantis before they vote for Abbott).

Armstrong and FitLump?  2 terrible people. Just because he stuck his dick in a skinnier version of that wildebeest doesn’t make her more attractive. She has no redeemable qualities.

FitLump has grossed me out since Day 1. My post was more of a commentary on how sad it was that Lance, albeit a massive POS in his own right, decided he needed to fuck THAT.

Seems like a logical move from the party of small government.

Thank you Greg Abbott, this shining example of impotence in the form of large orange balls that won't do shit is exactly what we need to be spending taxpayer money on.

He is so fucking proud of this.

It's a good thing that nobody will swim under them.  Or try to go over them.

Although, since we're Texas, I'm sure it's going to kill a bunch of people.

You know what would be cheaper... and more effective?

Policy. An actual policy that addresses these peoples' needs to get out of their homeland, employers' needs for laborers, and our need to feel good about ourselves for actually doing the right thing.

But yeah, some big orange balls, that will... um... yeah.

What's amazing is that back in August of 2001, Rick Fucking Perry had an actual policy that addressed those things.  He even talked about improving the border situation to the point where we could have "open borders" (his actual words), and talked about how we can't slow down illegal immigration unless we understand and address the root causes, and how we could benefit from people living along the border in one country and working in another.  Even talked about a unified healthcare system along the border (unified with Mexico) and about raising the standards of living.

You can read his speech here: https://web.archive.org/web/20111019194534/http://governor.state.tx.us/news/speech/10688/

9/11 happens a few weeks later, that ends that experiment.

Then 4-5 years down the road, in 2006, President George W. Bush, Senator McCain, Senator Kennedy, and quite a few others, including, yes, Rick Fucking Perry, talk about a guest worker program where we acknowledge all of the illegal immigrants, get them registered, etc. - in fact most of Bush's plan was passed by the Senate, but killed by the House.  Bush's plan included:

  1. Protecting the homeland by protecting our borders: the program should include efforts to control the United States border through agreements with participating countries.
  2. Serve America's economy by matching a willing worker with a willing employer: the program should efficiently connect prospective workers with employers in the same sector.
  3. Promoting compassion: the program should provide a temporary worker card to undocumented workers that allows them re-entry into the United States during their three years.
  4. Providing incentives to return to home country: the program should require workers to return to their home countries after their work period has ended.
  5. Protecting the rights of legal immigrants: the program should not be connected with obtaining a green card.

The program also contains specific agenda items for reformation of the guest worker programs already in effect:

  1. Employers must make every reasonable effort to fill a position with American workers first.
  2. Enforcement against companies hiring illegal immigrants will increase.
  3. The United States will work with other countries to have guest workers included in their home country's retirement plans.
  4. Those in the program can apply for citizenship, but will not be given any preference and will enter at the end of the line.
  5. A reasonable increase in the number of legal immigrants into the United States.

Of course, if you wanted to be cynical, you could point out that Perry's two biggest donors (who also pumped money into Bush's campaigns as Governor and President), were the largest home builder in Texas, and the owner of the largest grocery chain in Texas, so of course both relied heavily on immigrant construction and agricultural workers, but that's only if you're being cynical.

These kinds of things would have slowed illegal immigration down and would have allowed us to get a grasp on who was actually here.  Nope.  Can't be smart these days.

I believe it was the Republicans that killed those, was it not?

To win over Trump supporters, Abbott is putting giant orange balls along the route where Trump’s wall was supposed to go?

have fun at church this morning fellas, I’ll be making my peace with the simulation.

What company had the contract to make the ball wall? And how much did their owners contribute to Abbott?

They could have just put a few National Guardsman along the river in lifeguard outfits, blow a whistle, and announce adult swim.

Hey you!  In the green!  No running along the sides!
