October 31Oct 31 Author Pledge class status update as of this morning. And in sad news, we've had a casualty. Was out of town for work much of the week and discovered someone lost a face. Not exactly sure how it happened, but these things are pretty fragile, and you can see how thin and narrow the connecting pieces are. I think I can probably repair it pretty well - likely adding some support to the structure in the process.
October 31Oct 31 I had over 70 trick-or-treaters in under an hour. No fucking way did all of those kids live in our subdivision. Gonna start checking IDs. I mean, yeah, made a kid happy, but your parents are sus. We always trick or treated in our own hood. Edited October 31Oct 31 by Iceman
November 1Nov 1 They show up by the car load here too. Not like you can turn little kids away because you know they don’t live around the neighborhood.
November 1Nov 1 butterscotch discs need eatin too... We never did that uptownin bullshit. Just sayin. The people at the houses where we went knew who the fuck we were. Edited November 1Nov 1 by Iceman

Different world now. I don’t mind it as long as drunk parents or stupid older kids don’t act a fool. Let the kids have fun. But it’s not like we give out some kind of rich people candy. Still same Kit Kats and shit. Edited November 1Nov 1 by tbone_

November 1Nov 1 This was our busiest night yet in this house. We had to take our kids down the block for a party so we left my mother on a rocking chair on the front porch. She’s notoriously stingy and uses Halloween as a teaching moment about manners and only taking one piece. I get it, but it’s embarrassing. She had 800 pieces of candy to give out and was out by 7:35. I’m done buying the good stuff. They can have bubble gum next year.
November 1Nov 1 Author These first two houses are always the best ones in the neighborhood. And this one looks like it's on fire from a block away. I have to imagine that there's a real "Kenny Rogers Broasters Seinfeld Episode" vibe inside.
November 1Nov 1 I do all this, had 30 beers and 12 Trulys in the cooler for parents, 160 full size candy bars...11 kids. None of the regulars. It is a bit depressing when your kids and their friends start to age out. PXL_20251101_002114927.mp4

Just coming back to this after the WS game. I mean kids are literally on roblox or whatever the fuck nonstop. Is one night a year to give out fun size candy a big deal to those that don't live in your neighborhood? Edited November 1Nov 1 by Zepol87

November 1Nov 1 Ton of 6 7 bullshit at the block party, but also 10 kegs of good beer and a hot dog stand.

False, but don't let the truth get in the way of a good tale. It was to prove that imaginary internet points had a value, and the fact you still remember the exercise absolutely proves it was true. Meanwhile, I have no idea who the fuck you are. and yeah, back on topic; it's bullshit that people come to neighborhoods other than their own to trick or treat. It's supposed to be about community and seeing people you know in your neighborhoods. I see now( finally) why so many people don't even bother any more getting candy or setting up shop. Just go to the local trunk or treat at the church or (abandoned) mall. Why do we ever lock our doors to our homes? Why do we lock our vehicles? Because Iceman should be generous, but y'all are keeping your shit. Hypocrites. Edited November 1Nov 1 by Iceman
November 1Nov 1 Is this why you see now no one gives out candy? Because you care about your fucking Kit Kats? Amazing and sorry we took your candy one time a year
November 1Nov 1 Popular Post Mom got sick so it fucked our plans up a bit, but a decent amount of traffic overall. We live in the very golf course development suburb part of wake Forest but it’s pretty country pretty quick so we get a lot of kids coming to trick or treat on a street with lights and big decorations and big candy. When we’re out of the little kid phase and I can breathe a bit we’re going to go ham on the decorations. The boy is not nearly as fearless as the girl but understood the assignment immediately on his first sentient Halloween.

Failing to gnash teeth and rend garments over poor kids also enjoying Halloween doesn't mean that we somehow therefore don't care about the contents of our homes. It just means that we're not bothered by kids who come from less fortunate (or rural, or otherwise less densely populated) areas briefly joining our neighborhood and community for the holiday. There is no injustice being perpetrated against you by these children, and I bet most of their parents are grateful for the grace and inclusion. Perhaps you can see the difference in the light of day...
November 1Nov 1 Author I offered children the option of choosing a potato again this year. A few kids seemed to remember from last year, a few were very excited, some were confused, and parents generally thought it was funny. A few people mentioned having seen the idea on the local news, online, etc., so the foolishness is spreading. I bought a couple of variety bags with red, white, and purple types. Last year, I only had white potatoes, and only allowed one potato per group in order to artificially inflate desirability and cause fights. This year, only one potato of each color was in the treat bowl at any time, and no more than three potatoes (one per color) were allowed per group. There were no quarrels or disagreements this year, so based on this unsatisfactorily small sample size, I guess it's statistically unlikely that four or more kids in a given group will all want a potato. *exemplar potatoes in the above photo are not representative of typical sizes. We had 14 purple (generally the largest) 25 white, and 24 red (generally the smallest) to start. This morning, final tally of the remainders are 8 purple left, 15 white left, and 20 red left. The number of white potatoes taken (10) equals the combined number of purple (6) and red (4) taken. This breaks down to kids choosing the white potato 50% of the time, purple 30%, and red 20%. November 1Nov 1 Author We found one potato (purple) smashed on the sidewalk in front of the neighbor's house.
