One of my favorites from a long time ago. Had just recently started listening to some of his songs again.

One of the first concerts I ever went to was Jerry Jeff at Rockefeller's in Houston. 2020 can fuck right off.

Just heard this. Motherfucker. Love this man.

RIP, Scamp Walker.

Well, crap.  Never met the guy, but I know a whole bunch of his friends who are surely crushed by the news.  He always made me smile.

Fuck. Just one of the best. Only thing the MIL and I agree on.

Well, I mean....fuck this shit.

Aye aye aye, Katie...what the fucking fuck with this fucking year.

Was this the guy with all the raunchy country songs?

No. (Should neg, won’t neg.)

Not sure which one of these will wind up the “official” Scamp Walker thread but ... goddammit.

JJW was the first “country” artist that I “got” and I was at UT when it happened. A HS friend used to babysit his kids for some odd reason that I can’t remember. This news fucking bums me out.

I’ve already run through “Viva Terlingua” and a few other single songs since I found out an hour or so ago. JJW, you will be missed.

Such a gut punch.  I listened to his music pretty much my entire life.  How could you not if you grew up in Texas?  One of the coolest things that I ever got to experience was cruising out to Luckenbach on a beautiful Sunday afternoon some time in the 90s, strolling up to the Post Office/Bar and buying a cold Lone Star from Marge(RIP), then turning around to the big oak tree and seeing Jerry Jeff just sitting there on a picnic table bench strumming his guitar and singing for about 15 people. That was back when they still had beer tabs all over the ground. What a moment. RIP Jerry Jeff Walker.

That block of artists that came up in the 70s Austin will probably never be matched. They shaped a lot of what we see and listen to today. Jerry Jeff was a big part of that block. Thing is too, they all, for the most part, genuinely liked each other,  that's why them working together on songs was such a great success.  They built a wonderful genre.

God bless Jerry Jeff

I remember listening to Viva Terlingua in high school during the very early 80s.  The album / cassette / 8 track was already 9 years old by the time I graduated.

Now VL is pushing 50 years and still seems timeless to me and very listenable.
Couple VL with Mr. Bojangles and JJW had a pretty impressive life’s work.

RIP, JJW.   Glad you got to Texas as fast as you could.  You’ll be missed.

My frat used to book him often back in the 70’s. More than a few times, we had to haul him out of  bars and strip clubs to come to the gig. Those were his best shows.

Scamp Walker time in Heaven.

is it tears I see or is it rain?

you're thinking of David Allen Coe. DAC couldn't carry JJW's jock strap.

RIP JJW

User name checks out.

This sucks. Fuck 2020.

I grew up with Viva Terlingua on 8 track being played on every family road trip.

Was ecstatic when I got to UT and found out other people did too, and went to see him every time possible, in any venue or festival in or around Austin in the mid 80’s

Didn’t realize he was “on the clock”. 2020 can continue to fuck itself into Bolivia

I’m in Terlingua.

and was listening to Viva Terlingua on the drive in yesterday

holy shit

RIP

That's a beautiful coincidence.  I'd like to think he's behind that sunrise with a half smile.

I didn't get into his music until well into college.  He and I used to frequent the same neighborhood place for takeout for several years (about 2005-2015).  Didn't even recognize him the first few times.  He and I both had the same tendency to ask the kitchen to prolong our orders while we hoisted a few.  Only had a handful of conversations with him, and never about music.  What an incredibly nice and illuminated man he was.  /csb

RIP, JJW        shine on

FUCK THIS

many a road trip with no real destination but brought me closer with friends, as mentioned  by someone else discovering Jerry Jeff was playing somewhere within driving distance and just going was essential growing up Texan

Damn. He’s what originally got me into Texas country in HS. Quickly led me to Guy and Townes and others. It was always cool seeing him around town. Legend.

I believe you may be thinking of Wheeler Walker, Jr.  No relation to JJW.

That's the one. I just remembered my wife's country family playing some raunchy stuff while we were drinking beer  and the dude had 3 names

Just sitting here feeding the daughter and tearing up holding her and listening to Nightrider’s Lament.   Damn, what a hellacious legend.  Thanks for the poetry good Sir.  Your legend will live on forever.

Dammit. RIP, Jerry Jeff. So glad I got to see him live on numerous occasions. Impossible to remember road trips and river trips from college and beyond without hearing his songs. I even got to meet him and shake his hand once. A true Texas and Country Music Legend.

It’s on my “If You are Stranded on a Deserted Island” list....whether they say I can have 10, 5, 3.....1.

Saw him at the Steamboat the night Dallas revealed who shot JR. JJW asked the crowd if we wanted to know and everyone yelled back no, because we were there to see him and didn't care about the show.

"Grandpa had him a wandering eye, must have passed it on down to me.  None of the girls are pretty as Susan, but I like some that I see." -- The pot can't call the kettle black -- from "Riding High"  RIP JJW

Fucking sucks. Never got to see him.

I’ve always loved his cover of LA Freeway. Where theres a lot melancholy in Guy’s version, JJ’s has such a jangly swinging vibe that makes you feel how happy that person would be to get the fuck out of California. Like you’re riding East on I -10 in an old pickup with the windows down.

You know Jack, that Son of a Bitch is coming...
