September 12, 20241 yr In the market for a new car but I've been waiting for the prices and interest rates to improve. What's the best website for tracking market indicators?

September 13, 20241 yr Went with a 2024 R1T. Too good to pass up with my friend's discount, plus it puts me ahead of the line for the R2.

September 20, 20241 yr Just renewed the registration on my wife’s Tesla and I see the state of Texas has now added a $200 EV fee to registration. I guess it’s supposed to make up for lost fuel taxes, which is $0.20/gallon. So that assumes the EV driver would otherwise buy 1,000 gallons of gas in Texas per year. At a modest 25 mpg average, that’s 25k miles per year driving within the state, which seems absurdly high.In a state with a strong O&G industry and lobbyists, the $200 EV fee certainly seems punitive against EV owners.

All in Texans paying $0.384/gallon. At 25mpg would be 13k miles a year.

I’m assuming that is not happening, in which case the federal gas tax is irrelevant.

Ah, yeah I just took the current tax on gas, but you are correct it seems that Texas is just pocketing that extra amount, so yeah definitely punitive / more expensive for EV owners.
February 17Feb 17 I drove the Chevy Silverado LT EV on Saturday and was extremely impressed. I worry about it being a new model - and that it is a little more pricey than I would like to spend on an unproven EV. I have considered a Tesla Model 3 because of its relatively low entry price point. However, the depreciation seems to be pretty steep on the Teslas these days. Thoughts I am having (1) just buy new or (2) buy used. #1 - I suffer depreciation, but the good/bad/ugly of the car is all on me. #2 - 2 years old and around $20k lower than new What do the Tesla owners and Tesla haters have to say? Ideally, I want a reasonably priced EV with range of 300 miles.

Anyway, there’s no need to cloak this thread IMO. We all know what the situation is and there are plenty of other threads to discuss that. I will say that I’d be surprised if it weren’t a strong buyers’ market for used Teslas right now. Is that what you’re seeing @boilerhorn?
February 17Feb 17 Agree not to cloak this thread, but I would be dishonest if acquiring a Tesla at this point did not give me pause. Be that as it may... Most of the newer EVs out there are fascinating, but have crazy MSRP and/or low range. VW van above falls into both categories. I am seeing a decent 2nd-ary market for Tesla right now. A 2023 M3 Long-range w/ 20k miles is selling for 65% of new - from Tesla. I think they can be had for less elsewhere, too.

Depreciation probably isnt assessed properly. First they just had the new model. Second, EV credit brought down value across the board. As a new buyer, its unlikely the credits will be perpetual or increased - to your future advantage. It's on balance still the best car in the segment. IMO, Hyundai/Kia are credible competitors if you like their styling. They still have more software weaknesses. The VW IDBuzz gets nowhere near 300 miles. I like Polestar 3 but they price it on the high end. Taycan Cross could be a good 2nd hand splurge.
February 18Feb 18 I really wish Ford would do an electric Maverick but they don’t seem to be in any hurry on that.
February 18Feb 18 Are the Hyundai Ioniqs nice? I’ll probably keep driving my truck for another 5 years but the 6 looks cool. But Hyundai.

Both the Ioniq 5 and 6 get pretty good reviews, I think. I rode in a coworker's 6 once and it seemed pretty nice. When we were thinking we'd have to buy a new car back in the fall, I was leaning pretty heavily toward the 6 but we hadn't test drove one yet (we ended up not needing to buy). The looks are polarizing but I fall in the camp of really liking it.

I bought a Mustang Mach E GT (used) about a year ago because we had a PHEV for road trips, or when I had to work off-site away from my main office, etc. Well, my ex and I got divorced and I don't have that backup available. Now, I *love* the Mach E, but don't have time to do a stop-and-fill each way when I'm working off-site without waking up stupidly early or getting home stupidly late. It makes a long day longer, and it's a few times a month. PHEV solves that. Leader in the pack is the Grand Cherokee for me right now.

The last time I was car shopping, I got in the Model 3 ready to love it and got out 10 seconds later because it sucked. No turn signal ... you had to push buttons on the steering wheel instead. A giant touchscreen for everything. The interior felt cheap. Perhaps the younger folks enjoy doing everything through a screen and pushing buttons to turn but it was not for me. My wife liked the Mach-E and we almost went down that road. It sucked less than the Tesla. How hard is to make a car with a reasonably nice interior with just a few knobs and dials instead of a giant monitor?

Meaningfully the suspension is more compliant, seats are better. Friend bought the Hyundai Ioniq 5 because he couldnt wait for a Model Y. Roomy car, AWD drivetrain great like the Y. Theres stupid maintenance requirements and bugs in the in-car software and phone app and other limitation in tech that reminds you its kinda stuck in the old car world rather than built from a clean architecture. Tesla gets regular and legitimate functionality and *safety* updates through software. Previously, they added signals from the vehicle exterior cameras to pretension seatbelts in case of imminent crash (rather than wait for airbag triggers). Recently, they use in-cabin visual sensor (in addition to existing seat weight sensor) to adjust airbag response to the estimated weight and height of passengers. In theory many of these EVs have software-updates, but they dont have the same level of component integration so they can’t or they don’t update with that level of functionality and frequency.

February 18Feb 18 Hearing that the turn signal stalk is missing from the newer Model 3 sucks. I love my 2018 Model 3 and the turn & gear stalks plus the steering wheel buttons being the only physical buttons available to me is awesome. I absolutely love the minimalism and efficiency BUT no turn signal stalk has me worried.
February 19Feb 19 the stalk is in the new Y, and rumors are will return to the 3 also. some of their decisions they go back on. the model s went to the yoke like steering, then after a while they decided to make the traditional round steering wheel available again.
March 3Mar 3 Thanks for all of the answers when I asked about this a short while back. Until I find a suitable EV not associated with the Nazi Elmo, I will gladly continue driving my 10+ year old Toyota Sienna and Lexus RX. /no CR @immamac - feel free to delete if I am violating thread rules.

If those are your comps, I'd seriously look at a used Rivian R1S. The only thing Rivian doesn't have that I would think you'd miss is captains chairs in the middle row. Otherwise, it's one of the best cars I've ever owned. And we liked mine so much we bought (well, leased with the specials last year) a 2nd one for my wife.

Kia/Hyundia/Genesis make great EVs. They are the best of the non-super expensive luxury models. Go test drive one.

Ideally, I want a reasonably priced EV with range of 300 miles. Politics aside and I won’t buy another god damned tesla for anything - but I bought both an S and an X used. I’ve had virtually no issues either them. AC repair on the X and a door handle on the S, that’s about it. Everything else minor. Battery degradation is minimal. Both over 100,000 miles. Our X is a 2016 and has 220 max range and it’s never an issue except frequent stops on road trips. 2016 is still highly relevant due to software based controls. No car play though. The thing is though, there are so many options now and in a year or two the used market for all the other OEMs will start to develop. Not sure our next one - it won’t be a tesla - but it will almost surely be used. The lack of mechanical systems and parts makes buying a used EV just that much more logical. Edited March 4Mar 4 by troph
March 4Mar 4 I’d also add that apart from maybe rivian you’d be hard pressed to find a better EV than the model S. Those saying it seems cheap, I don’t know about the Y and the 3 but I’ve not thought the X or the S were cheap. Extremely simple yes. I still enjoy driving it. But if I had to chose now I’d get a used Rivian.

But if I had to chose now I’d get a used Rivian. I've always found the comments that the interior is "cheap" was a misguided critique by those judging just from photos. Obviously, tastes are subjective. What I really mean is that in typical cars, the driver is enveloped by the dash with its instrument cluster and centerstack with banks of gauges and buttons. And on that basis you would would say those components are nicer in an Audi than they are in a Ford. You can't avoid them. They're prominently in your face. In a Tesla, those things are entirely absent. The dash is low and the most visible thing is the greenhouse/exterior view. So the interior is neither nice or cheap, it's that when you're actually driving the car, it's simply not noticeable at all.
March 8Mar 8 Thinking of dipping my toes in the EV waters. Any thoughts on the Lexus RZ? It will solely be used as a daily commuter car, about 50 miles a day. Charging at home every night. I like the look of the interior better than a similarly priced model y. For the price (mid 40k), seems like an attractive option.
March 8Mar 8 The outgoing Model Y Performance version can be had for $37k after the $7,500 tax credit. That’s a pretty good deal.

March 12Mar 12 Author So I drive a Tesla Model S that is now 4 years old and out of warranty. Thinking of getting rid of it and getting another EV but not Tesla. Anybody have any thoughts on Lucid? I want a sedan (no truck or SUV's since the wife has the SUV for the family). I charge at home and rarely ever go on road trips. As an example, my Model S has 25K miles after 4 years.
March 14Mar 14 What should I buy y'all? Need to buy by June but I'm trying to accelerate because I'm worried tariffs are going to fuck me. Budget is $50. I actually don't care as much as most about range and charging speed because this will be a ~50 mile per day commuter vehicle charged at home in a garage every night. I'm in Houston so no concerns about cold-weather performance. So far I plan to look at the Hyundais and the Mustang Mach E. What else? Seems like there are a fair amount of both M-B and BMW on the used market. Anyone know anything about the Chevys? New or used? I've never bought a used vehicle in my life, but not opposed to it.
