No, they didn’t teach us that in law school. Instead, we covered things that are actually in the Constitution, like the 9th amendment, which makes clear something that was already true before the BOR was even passed: the constitution doesn’t grant the people any rights. That’s right, it doesn’t GRANT any right. Rather, it grants certain powers and roles, by the consent of the states and the people, to the government.

Your interpretation, and those of the other “originalists,” voids the 9th Amendment:

“The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.”

Rights reside within the people. Within - dare I say - their corporeal bodies themselves. My wife’s right to control her body is inherent, timeless, and is not granted by the government and, as the 9th amendment so plainly tells us, not denied by the constitution’s other rights.

Quite plainly, rights that are NOT enumerated in the constitution are no less inviolable than those that are. But your ilk doesn’t know that, because the constitution isn’t a charter for the people, it is a weapon for a single political class, most lethal when it is completely misused, contrary to its plain language admonishing you assholes not to do what you just did.

You and the “originalists” are not constitutionalists at all. You are proof texters, finding snippets you love out of context (“shall not be infringed!”), and ignoring the remainder. You’re anti-American, pursuing an anti-American dream and vision, at the expense - likely fatal - of this nation.

A women in her second year of college shouldn’t be forced to upend her life to give birth any more than a 14 year old rape victim should.

My 20 year old daughter should be able to have sex and go to college and go to law school and build her life and have children when and if she so chooses. She shouldn’t have to be raped or have a life threatening pregnancy in order to decide what to do with her own body.

I've always maintained that the people against abortions aren't so much for saving lives, but for punishing young women for having sex.  I know there's rape and other uninvited sexual aggressions out there, but by and large they are after those who are having sex when they aren't.   They relate it to the hairy legged free loving hippy chick.    They are supported by those guys like Cruz and Kavanaugh, who just didn't have it when it came to finding women to have decent sexual relationships with.   Penis size, looks or other insecurities drove them to the misogynist side.   This is a punishment to all those women they wanted and couldn't have.

So much porn is violent porn, nearly always against the woman.  In an odd way, this is an extension of that.  

All of it has to do with punishing those engaging in sex for pleasure and curtailing it.  Starts with the churches (rhythm, abstinence) and just grows from there.  Next will be same sex relationships and then contraceptives.   

I'm not saying this is the full underlying reason for this vendetta on abortions, but I'd daresay it's more this than saving lives.

Would agree it's more about punishing young women for sex. Women with money will still terminate any unwanted pregnancies though. Unwanted poor kids will place stress upon society.

And the thing is, it’s never been about “life” with them, and we need to be honest with ourselves and with people who take that position. For the most part, so-called “pro-lifers”:

-Support the death penalty
-Supported all of the death squads that the Reagan Administration supported in the 1980’s
-Are against all or most measures of gun control
-Are against nuclear weapons control
-Are against environmental protections
-Supported the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq

-Oppose birth control
-Oppose sex education 
-Support punishments for LGBTQ lifestyle decisions

Yeah, “pro life” my ass. That’s a canard, and it’s the abject failure that the immoral teachings of the religious right Have.Always.Been. If you want to get a sampling of what that sentence means, consider that the states most in favor of “abstinence only education” are also the states that rank the highest in terms of teenage pregnancy, repeat teenage pregnancy, and teenage abortion. So when they tell you that they are pro life, understand that whatever conversation you’ve been having with them at that exact point has lost any purpose and you should cut them off by simply saying “you are lying.”

@immamac - what do you think about a sticky for posters who live outside of Texas and are willing / able to host anybody who needs reproductive care? @PenelopeWitherspoon (NY obviously) and @mchookem (Soon-to-be CO) have mentioned this. I'm in CA and when the news hit Friday one of the first things my wife said was trying to figure out how to help others who don't live in places were abortion or other care is possible. I image we are not the only ones.
