One guy (call him John) was always busting the chops of a rich rancher/oil man (Al) about how cheap Al was.

Whenever John died, he had the funeral director put a big price tag on the casket, showing how much he spent on it.  All just to fuck with Al for being so cheap.  John was my hero.

Decades-old Dairy Queen location closes suddenly in San Antonio

The restaurant's last service was Wednesday.

"After 20+ years The Decision was made to close. We are greatly sadden by this decision, but will always cherish the Love and kindness given by this great community," the note said. The note was briefly taken down this morning and replaced with similar language.

Yeah, I was more upset by the Zarzamora one. But it still is a sad trend.

In 2023, another longtime Dairy Queen location closed at 9222 S. Zarzamora, on the city's Southside. That location had been around for 45 years at the time of its closure.

Unless you're taking your talents to South Beach, "The Decision" should not be capitalized.

The DQ in Bridgeport closed a couple years ago. I don't remember it not being there.  They should build one out on the highway, which is where this was 60 years ago. Now it was buried downtown.

There was a corporate Dairy Queen meeting at the courtyard Marriott in new braunfels Wednesday when I was checking out, that’s all i have.

Were they all a bunch of great big fat people, or do they avoid getting high on their own supply?

How has Dairy Queen not been sued by aggy? Wasn't that the original name for yell leaders?

The DQ in Georgetown on 35 is always great. Right next door to Whataburger.

The best DQ is the local owner DQ. They say FU corporate menu and make their own specials. I salute All You Can Eat catfish Fridays.

Brand new one from the slab up died shortly in my hood. They didn’t honor the DQ TX app, which is a big fail in 2024, especially when there’s a dozen other fast food choices all lined up.

DQ franchises in Texas are more complicated than getting a Taxi medallion in NYC. It's literally OG turf war.

Buy some of these at HEB and air fry them.  Make decent CFS sandwiches.

Accurate. I don't know the last time I went to the Whataburger near me because of that shit. We went to the DQ about a year ago. 1 car in the parking lot. No cars in the drive through Still took almost 20 minutes to get 3 blizzards.

Sucks because those were mainstays of my child hood and early 20s

You just have to remind yourself that there is a reason those people work there and it's not because they are wicked smart.

DQ service quality varies dramatically, and I mean DRAMATICALLY, from location to location. Generally, the Mayfield DQs in the Austin area are excellent.

That Dairy Queen was around way before the 2000s. Shit, I remember going there as a kid in the 80s and it was an older DQ at the time.

Earlier this year, I paid $11 for a box of Dilly Bars. Sheeeeeeeeeeit. It's Klondike from now on. They better wrap a used popsicle stick on it.

Those are pretty damn good, BTW. Since Tyson got all uppity, they are probably the best you can find.

Ate at the DQ in Johnson City today. Got the Dude and not as good as I remember. Fries not as good as Mayfield.

Our neighborhood DQ is a Mayfield store.
Never a problem and is really top notch.

M&M Blizzards are my thing, but last week I tried the Royal New York Cheesecake Blizzard.
That is now my favorite….

Maybe just temporary come on bait, but it was awesomely good.

"Slowly dying" is exactly the words I would use to describe how I feel while waiting four hours for my food anytime I've made the mistake of pulling into a Dairy Queen on a road trip over the last twenty years.   I know there are some locations managed by solid folks who run a tight ship, but most of them are a place for country folk to inadvertently learn mindfulness meditation.

I love DQ but you have to go into it knowing you're looking at easily 30 minutes taken out of your car trip if you stop off. I find it amusing to point out all the former DQ spots around town since they all had the same shape for 30+ years and were converted to other restaurants or strange places like a Bonsai tree store.

The former DQ outside of Mexia was converted into a really damned good Italian restaurant.  Frankie's Pizza and Pasta.  I highly recommend.

Texicali Grill took over an old Taco Bell and excelled like a mofo. Talking Oltorf, dammit.

I haven’t had a good steak finger in 10 years. Can’t get them crispy. The CFS sandwich is usually good. They usually nail chicken tenders. Hard to figure.

My wife still loves DQ tacos. Dily bars are still great. Blizzards still go hard.

Their locations are certainly dwindling. Probably 3 locations within reasonable driving distance of central Houston.

Mayfield DQs go hard in the paint.

Wait...what?

The former DQ outside of Mexia was converted into a really damned good Italian restaurant.  Frankie's Pizza and Pasta.  I highly recommend.

Now wait just a minute.

It’s inside Mexia. Outside Mexia would imply that Mexia had been big enough for two DQs, one in and one out. Yeah sure, they’d be rival hangouts for different groups and if you said “we’re going to dq”, well, your family for damn sure knew which one you meant. No, Mexia isn’t a two DQ kind of town. Can’t handle the glitz and glam that comes with that kind of city living.

They’ll have to settle for being a dual subway location metropolis instead. I’ll check with my sources to see if one subway is still in a standalone building less than half a mile from the super Walmart that houses the other subway.
