November 22, 20205 yr I think I've had rabbit. Not sure if it was fried, though. Strangely enough I'm not sure I've ever had a slice of fried bologna. Those would be the only 2.
November 22, 20205 yr 36/36 altho the fried alligator i ate in NO...seems like it would be more appropriate on a list of LA foods anyway. i grew up in Houston, but my dad was an east Texas country boy and he never outgrew it, i swear he used to 'hunt' along Buffalo Bayou lol...i had rabbit, frog's legs, squirrel, etc. basically if you could kill it and fry it, we had it.
November 22, 20205 yr 36 of 36. I grew up eating 2/3 of that without even thinking about it. I've eaten A LOT more fried rabbit than alligator tails
November 22, 20205 yr 36 of 36, although I do not enjoy oysters. Food/ drink that should also be listed: chow-chow kolaches Lone Star beer arguably a Chilton, although that is very, very West Texas in nature. arguably crawfish, although it is very SE Texas in nature.
November 22, 20205 yr I would imagine the majority of the United States would qualify as "true texan" based on that dumb ass list.

I like all of these additions. The overall list is decent but misses some of the more unique texas fare. Like chili pequins, barbacoa, redfish on the half shell, calf fries and a ranch water to wash it all down.

I know I’ve eaten all those cooked in other ways (we grilled a lot growing up) but can’t remember if they were ever fried, seems like a dumb list.
November 22, 20205 yr Fried zucchini is plenty good. It's better stewed with tomatoes and onions, IMHO. We usually use yeller squash for fryin...
November 22, 20205 yr 24, and I'm a picky eater. I had to think about the Homemake Ice Cream question. My grandmother had this bucket thing with a crank that you had to put rock salt into, so I'm saying "yes."

Isn't that also known as "Ranch Water?" I thought that was all the rage these days, according to the in-flight magazines.

Ranch Water is made with tequila, no? Chiltons are usually vodka. I don't drink either one on the regular, but had chiltons back in the college days.

November 22, 20205 yr That list should be pared down (by 67%) and edited. I.e. "chili WITHOUT beans". Add in things like, been to the Alamo, floated down the Comal, fished in the Gulf, eaten at the Big Texan. Also, drinks - Lone Star, Shiner, cactus pear margarita, etc...
November 22, 20205 yr 34 for me. Won't eat oysters and have never been offered rabbit, but would probably pass.

I thought a Ranch Water was just a tequila and soda with lime. So why would you call a vodka soda anything other than a vodka soda?

Because we fucking said so. It's also traditionally served margarita style in a cocktail glass with a salted rim. Look, it's not my drink of choice, so not a big deal. It is pretty damned uniquely Texas though. Gimme a vodka-tomato... No dumbass, it's a Bloody Mary. Edited November 22, 20205 yr by slorch
November 22, 20205 yr didn't we do this a few months back, but it wasn't just corn dogs, it was fletchers? i don't think goulash was on that one, either. Edited November 22, 20205 yr by elfenix

November 22, 20205 yr I don't think food has much to do with it. I was born at home in Taylor County with a midwife helping my mother, who is a certified Daughter of the Old Republic of Texas.

November 22, 20205 yr 30, and most of those are things I ate before moving to Texas when I was in college.
November 22, 20205 yr Sweet thread....apparently the whole world is Texas as fuck because people eat food

November 23, 20205 yr Maybe it is. Who really cares anymore. They’re just passing the name around now. I don’t know why anybody would drink it.
November 23, 20205 yr One of my alleged decendants fought against Santa Anna. So fuck yall, I'm Texas, Bitch!
