Yep. However, one of my law school profs DID lead a lawsuit against Chile, for assassinating a Chilean dissident on US soil.  Chile said "fuck you, get your judgment and try to collect!"  So, he

Imagine a con-man with the power to pardon all of his accomplices. Now, open your eyes, no need to imagine it.  It's happening.

Alternate take:  We are now in the end-game, and they are preparing to leave the WH next month, and trying to cover their asses on the way out.

The only question left about the trump family pardon, does Tiffany get a blanket pardon ?

So in the article TwiceHorn posted upthread, it says that impeached officials can't be pardoned.  If that's so, then Trump cannot be pardoned as he was impeached, correct?

perhaps you're not aware, but the president can do whatever the fuck he wants !!

That limitation has typically been read to mean only that the President cannot use the pardon power to prevent impeachment of a public official.

I think its clear that you can't be pardoned for future crimes.

As for pardoning himself, nothing can be done to prevent Trump from stating that he's pardoned. In theory, Trump can say whatever he wants. He can claim he has a pardon for future crimes too. It doesn't make it so.

Assuming Trump pardons himself, it will be interesting to see if the DOJ under Biden would keep agree that it's a valid pardon or not. There is an official DOJ list of pardons/commutations back to Nixon:   https://www.justice.gov/pardon/clemencyrecipients

Can he pardon himself for the crime of selling pardons?  Inquiring minds want to know!

It would not be interesting, it would be completely bullshit to even entertain the notion that a president can pardon himself.  This is not a serious thing and should not be treated as such.

Well, it is Trump we're talking about here.

Given that they're trying to pierce attorney-client privilege due to the crime-fraud exception, I might guess that it's mostly attorneys.  Certainly one is involved.

There is also mention of a commutation of sentence, which would indicate someone who is already convicted and imprisoned.

That guy speculates that it's Broidy.

So let's say Trump puts a large sum of money in a trust on the condition that Pence pardon Trump in the future before Biden's inauguration.  If Pence fails to pardon Trump before then, the contents of the trust revert to Trump. Pence accepts the conditional trust and promises to pardon Trump when he becomes President.  Trump then pardons Pence for accepting that bribe and everything else. Trump resigns the next day. A few days later, Pence gives Trump a blanket pardon and the contents of the trust are fully distributed to him.

If that happens, would Pence have committed a crime after he was pardoned?

I know a preemptive pardon was given to Nixon but has anyone ever challenged it in the Supreme Court? One should challenge that a pardon can only be for a crime of which you have been convicted.

Just needed to do search.

Quote

The Supreme Court already has clarified the scope of the President’s pardon power. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson issued a pardon to a lawyer from Arkansas who held office under the Confederate States, “for all offences by him committed, arising from participation, direct or implied, in the Rebellion.” In an opinion issued in 1886, the Supreme Court clarified that the pardon power conferred by the Constitution is “unlimited, with the exception [of cases of impeachment],” and it “extends to every offence known to the law.” The Supreme Court wrote that the President may exercise the pardon power after the commission of the criminal offense, before or during legal proceedings, and after conviction and judgment. In fact, so long as the President grants a pardon before conviction, then doing so prevents any of the “penalties and disabilities consequent on conviction from attaching” to the pardoned person.

what is this, the fucking BAR exam?

Susan B Anthony better get her affairs in order.

remember when "funneling" or "laundering" kind of implied like a scheme, or at least some effort to distance the dots/points of contact from one another?  You'd here "funneling" and think, "Well, it's probably some foreign bank and some shady middle-man, and some coded language asking for favors in exchange for off-shore currency in some discrete trust."

Remember that from every show, ever made?

Nope, not these fucking guys.  Dude needing the pardon offers straight cash straight to the fucking campaign in exchange for expedited pardon.

What happened to the art of seduction, the dance, the nuance?

DOTARD going to sell anything the presidency offers and isn't nailed down.  Policy has been for sale but now it's a discounted liquidation, everything must go before January 20th.

so we're 20 minutes away then from Trump pressuring Barr to blame this all on CompUSA?

Are pre-emptive pardons really a ting?  "Just hang on to this Get Out of Jail Free card until you need it."

I mean, that's expected, but do we think they have any clue, ANY CLUE, that pardons do not protect them from prosecutions for state crimes?  NY AG should be able to have a fucking field day, at the very least with Ivanka and Jared.

Excellent. Do it.  Because accepting a pardon is an admission from guilt.  I would love for it to be a matter of record that the entire Trump crime family has admitted guilt.

She probably doesn't need it. She does the minimum to keep her place in his will. Just like a lot of rich kids who hate their parents, but want that sweet ass cash when said parent(s) kick the bucket. See the above gif for proof.

No thanks. I’d rather have them all rotting in jail proclaiming their innocence.

Now that Barr has announced no significant issues found, I see Trump pivoting from contesting the election to a Twitter game show pardon sale-a-thon. Reasonable crooks would be discrete but Trump will be too easily seduced by the intoxicating power he holds over peoples' heads.

He will absolutely sell pardons too. Always Be Grifting.

It’s like the opposite of Minority Report.   “We know you will commit many future crimes, and you’re good.”
