Looking at a 2023 certified Toyota 4 Runner SR5 premium 4WD. It’s white with the blackout package and 74k miles. How are we liking this model?

You're asking the wrong person here.  I love the Stormtrooper look.  I have a 4Runner SR5 Premium ('16), and 2 of my brothers have the 4Runner SR5 Premium 4WD ('16 & '18).  I am a biased "buy that shit" vote all day every day, and twice on Sunday.

My wife has had a 2018 4Runner Limited for a few years now and we both really like it.  Last week, I bought a 2024 TRD Off-road Premium with the blacked out emblems and wheels.  It's cool as hell.   I'm in the process of buying new floor mats, cargo mats, and figuring stuff out.

There are some suspension differences between the OFP and the SR5 Premium, but I think everything else is the same.

Side note:  we have bought 2 out of our last three cars in San Antonio as opposed to Austin.  My new 4Runner had 9k more miles than a similar one in Austin, but was $5k less.

Yea it’s sharp as hell!

Since buying the 4Runner last week, I've purchased a few things.

Lasfit mats for the front and second rows.  Really good fit and coverage.   More rubber than the rigid, plastic like WeatherTech liners we have in the wife's 4Runner.

20250913_142153.thumb.jpg.b0e6e0f05495ebbb1f1e5999122702bb.jpg

Odero cargo mat.   Covers 100% of the back, including the small areas behind the wheel wells.  The WeatherTech we have in the other 4Runner is fine, but I think I'll like the total coverage of the Odero.

Also added the panels for the back of the second row.  Should provide protection when those seats are laid down.  Since I didn't get the same mats for the front and rear, I had to find some that were sold separately.  Found these at 4Runner Lifestyle.

20250913_142118.thumb.jpg.2aad800b2f249f89d59bf4bd436395a1.jpg

Finally got some smartphone door inserts, which allows for keeping the phone, wallet, flashlight, etc. In the door below the handle.  Without these the space is not ask that useful as the lip isn't yak enough to keep things from falling out.

The inserts are fairly solid and affix with double-sided tape.  Also from 4Runner Lifestyle.

I bought an Offroam phone mount that is engineered specifically for 4Runner.  Solid construction and firmly holds the phone.   Not sure if I'm going to keep it though.   With android auto, I don't really need the phone in front of me.

Thought I'd post on case anyone is looking at getting some new accessories.

I have an Offroam in my FJ. It’s great. I adapted their 20mm ball to the 1” RAM mount ball and use a MagSafe charger in the RAM MagSafe holder. It’s generally fine, though it has fallen off sometimes off you got a really large bump. The utility of having magnetic charging is worth it, though. It looks like they use the Peak Design MagSafe mount with it on their site. Maybe I will upgrade to that since it should have much stronger magnets in it.

mod'n out is much fun

I love the Offroam phone holders, we have them in my F150 and my wife's Jeep Wrangler, neither of which support Carplay.

The newer Mustangs in our family both have Carplay so really no need for the phone holders.

I don't really do anything fun with it, but now that I have the garage cleaned out and can leave the top down perpetually, I just love driving this thing. The gas mileage sucks but I don't really go anywhere for the most part. I think it looks badass with the top down, too. Alas soon it will be sleeting and I will need to get the hard top back on. PXL_20250914_171051111_MP.thumb.jpg.43046a35c6744a19aea465818b6be650.jpg

Not a fan of black - too hard to keep clean.

A nice clean black looks great, but I ain't washing cars every day*.  I have the ORP version of the white with blackout and like it.

*be careful using drive through car washes on dark cars.  I had a dark green Tahoe that showed swirls on the paint on the front of the roof from the previous driver using car washes on the regular.

Black shows dust, white shows dirt.  I've owned several of each.   If you don't want to clean your car, get something in a dark gray metallic.  That's what my current ride is.

That said, if the choice is between a stormtrooper, and Darth Fucking Vader, I know which way I'm going. :)

Couldn't pay me to own another black truck.

Haha all good points. Had a black Z71 Tahoe and it was a pita to keep clean and tiny scratches showed. Going to see the stormtrooper first and hope it works out. Might switch out the grill for a TRD pro one.

Good call. Black emblem just looks blank at a distance

After 6 months of digging I finally found a good Taco for my son. 2017 with 106k miles. I took it for a shakedown cruise this morning and it’s still nice and tight.

Only $40k for this 2003 with 86k miles

It took me for fucking ever to find one. I know a guy that is one of the sales managers at a huge Toyota dealership and he helped me get this one for not much over what the dealership gave for it on a trade. And I still ended up spending almost 2X what I thought I could find one for when I started looking.

I had a 2003 four door TRD with 130k miles that I got $10k for on a trade-in back in 2010. I should have never gotten rid of it.

That red 2003 is pretty sweet though!  Not $40k sweet, but still nice.

White. Spend a couple grand and have a blacked out roof applied via vinyl to give it a two tone look set apart.

Also the black looks like an SR5, but has the TRD pro heritage grille. Makes a really big difference imo on the gen 5. If I got the white, I would play with that do a front end bumper job as well. Even black vinyling the cross bars on the grille would be huge imo. I strongly prefer the white with a few tweeks.

Have you sourced the black valances yet?

I'm probably going to switch from the ORP silver to matte black to match the rest of the blackout.  Apparently the OEM are good black as opposed to matte.

Last week, two weeks after I bought the 4Runner, I was rear-ended.  Didn't do to much damage, but I'll need to replace the rear valance and repaint the bumper.

Has anyone replaced the low beam bulbs on their Taco/4Runner/FJ? The low beams in my 2017 Taco are pretty damn paltry but I'm on information overload after digging around on the internet for opinions on replacement options.

This dude has too much time on his hands, but this is an insane amount of information on the subject:

He is 100% right about not running HID/LED in housings not designed for them.

I have done a few HID retrofits (added projectors to stock housings, and even used all OEM parts for one of them) in the past on some of my previous vehicles which was pretty great. I thought about doing it to the FJ, but have only replaced the bulbs with better halogens so far.

It’s really just a trade off for longevity vs brightness. I’m using these and they are good and I really like the light color (rated at about 3400K which is pretty neutral):

I'm glad I stumbled onto that write up because I was about to just order plug and play LEDs to replace the stock bulbs. I don't want to tinker with adding projectors or ballasts or any additional stuff that is likely to be one more thing that can break.

Those philips bulbs look perfect, thank you for the response!

new FJ is out at car show in Japan

My first impression is it seems more like a Jeep Liberty or Bronco Sport

I was surprised to learn It is as big as the FJ Cruiser, just 3 inches shorter front to back but 5 inches taller.
If you jack it up and put some big tires on it you're not getting into many parking garages.

  • 1 month later...

Got new wheels today. Apparently cracked a rim on my Colorado trip back in May. Had to add air about once a month and finally went to get it fixed a few weeks ago and they told me it was the wheel. They stopped making the ones I had and I have been looking for a couple of years to find one of them to put on the spare and never had any luck so I bought 5 of these.

I wanted to put TRD wheels on. I have 18 inch tires so I had to get the TRD wheels that go on a tundra. I ordered 5 of them from Toyota of Cedar park and made the hour long trip up there last week to pick them up. They loaded them in the car and when I got home realized I only got 4 so I had to go back. Took it to discount tire to get them put on and discovered FJs have 106mm center hub and tundras have 96mm. So had to go back to toyota a third time to return them.

Couldn't find anything I liked but parked next to a jacked up Lexus LX with these wheels, took a picture and did an image search and found them.
