Texas A&M signee and quarterback Haynes King has two major limitations in his game right now and neither of them are related to his abilities or mental makeup. In fact, both are a product of the fact that he’s such a great all around athlete and he’s a throwback in many ways to guys I grew up with in rural areas of east Texas.

First off, King grew up playing multiple sports that included basketball and track in addition to football. Much like the quarterbacks of yesteryear, he played everything because that’s what quarterbacks did back in the day. There wasn’t a lot of other things to do so they moved from one sport into another depending on the season.

Second, there’s been a proliferation of club sports and along with that private tutoring for younger athletes so that they can succeed at those sports. Parents with good jobs living in metropolitan areas can afford those coaches and also the players themselves have the time and accessibility for that type of instruction.  These players also attended camps and events where they got even more instruction. In contrast, King had one quarterback coach in high school and never had the same level of access to that type of instruction nor he has been to may camps.

As a result, when you watch King, you’ve got someone who doesn’t have the same footwork or delivery on every play. That stems from the fact that he hasn’t had as many reps or degree of teaching that most of his contemporaries have.

He’ll slot his arm to a certain depth on one throw and then have a more of an overhand delivery on the next one. His feet don’t stay consistently under his body so that he can set them quickly and deliver the ball from one time to the next. This is especially true when he operates out of the gun as opposed to under center (and last night he was in the gun).

However, despite those issues….this is a guy who is playing at the highest level of post season competition with and against quarterbacks who have advantages in their development that he hasn’t had. He’s sufficiently coordinated that he can make throws from a variety of throwing motions and with people in his face.

There was one throw last night where a rusher came around in front of him and he had to step up and reset his feet to throw the ball. Not only that, another rusher came free and didn’t allow him to rotate into the throw. Even so, he got enough velocity on the ball to get it to the sidelines and give the receiver a chance to catch it.

King was also under duress quite a bit in the game as there always seemed to be one rusher coming free that made him move around. On his one long completion on third and six you saw him move to his left but one of the best parts of his game came into play as he kept his eyes upfield, was able to see a receiver with a step on a defender, and then dropped his arm down to get some air under the throw and get it to them.

In addition, because King has played so many different sports, he hasn’t had a lot of time in a weight room…in fact, he’s done a lot of running on the track and on basketball courts. He needs to be able to build up his entire body so that he can get more into his throws, not just his arm but also his torso and hips.

Finally, King’s best attributes at this stage of his career…his competitiveness and his vision…came out in the skills challenge that he won over a lot of guys who are more polished at his position. His ability to focus on the moment enhanced his physical skills. It’s interesting to me watching him at this event and The Opening this summer how every aspect of his game is better when he’s in these types of situations.  He’s very coordinated and so unlike some of his peers who lack his athleticism he can move and throw from a variety of arm slots and stances and still have touch on the ball.

King will need a redshirt season in order to build up his body and his mechanics but you can see that the potential is there for him to be really special. However, it’s going to take some time for him to reach that potential and some patience on the part of A&M fans who will be along for the ride.

At least he got more experience running for his life behind an under performing o-line

You know, I never played qb or very much organized football, I was at the beach surfing or windsurfing instead . but I have 4 years of eligibility and intangibles. Not sure I'd want to be an Aggie though.

King has one of the ugliest, slowest throwing motions I've ever seen. He's always going to struggle with accuracy and throw awful looking throws like the one he threw into the dirt at the UA game. Of course, those will all be counted as drops by TexAgs, so his adjusted completion percentage will be very high.

So all the other qbs there have had specialized, year round football coaching their whole lives?  Nobody else is a multi sport athlete who can’t afford private qb coaching?

none of them, say, played receiver until last season?

The OL coach getting pushed out seems like fan fantasy to me, that Tarp had to address because they talked it up into a story

So, King is an elite qb prospect who doesn't play very well because he's never focused on or learned how to play qb like some of his better performing peers?

All Jimbo needs to do is sprinkle some of his magic Jimbo dust on him, teach him some of that good qb stuff, and voila!

Sounds like the top qb recruit in Texas, for sure.

King doesn't go to camps and qb specialists because he's too busy competing. But he played like crap and won the skills challenge...mmkay...makes perfect sense

I'm sorry, but the only QB coach he's had is his dad, the head football coach at Longview. My guess, Coach King makes 6 figs easily, which probably has the weight of closer to 500K in East Texas. My guess is that Coach King didn't want Haynes getting more instruction because it would show how awful he is at teaching the position.

That’s a whole lot of words to say the kid’s physically weak and doesn’t know how to play QB. But great get, ags! Lulz

That skills challenge is basically an agility test and has next to nothing to do with QB skills.  Starts at 3:37.

I remember during the broadcast the announcers talked about how King would roll to his right every play and the defenders were justing waiting for him to do so.

There is a reason they were in a dogfight with Tennessee for his services stupid sip. This once in a generation multi sport athlete is a Jimbo coup. I remember the last super raw multi sport athlete we got to play QB here at Texas ended up being heisman trophy winner and NFL drafted QB Tyrone Swoopes.

Well, it should really be expected for him to play poorly. Not all of his competition is SEC material so he probably doesn’t really want to be there. It’s more like a vacation for him.

I played for Coach King.  He’s a Oline coach not a QB coach.

That explains why his son sucks so badly. Coach King should have known better than to try to coach him.

Lulz not every head coach is a QB whispering guru and Coach King was not his only fb coach.  Some of these takes are ridiculous.

It's a great get when your qb is at his best not playing football.  That also applies to everybody.

Where are they reading that?  Nobody here has changed their opinion of Herman and nobody is super cocky because of beating Utah.

You’re surprised to see this from a fan base that has no differentiation between optimism and certainty? A group that has a nonexistent relationship with fact?

Did these kids all sign early, or could they still be flipped in the next 4 weeks?  Not to us, but like cooper to Mississippi.

Except, you know, the 2 main positions where they are weakest they did nothing to address them in OL ( particularly Tackle ) and CB.

Talent acquisition isn't Jimbo's problem. We've just got to hope they get his FSU problems - a rotten OL and an imploding locker room. This class seems to be in line with both of those things.

They don’t have a good QB in the class either.  The one they got is a project who is several years away from even possibly being good enough to win with.

It'll be interesting to see how things go with Harris, Morris, and the NJ kids.

Would be great to go head to head and win some of that agricultural money--their football program broke.  I sure as hell wouldn't flip lines on either side.  They can keep their class too.   I like ours, although I'd like to pick up another linebacker or two.

The best thing about this is they wanted and would have for sure taken Ojomo, Graham, Broughton, Sweat, and also potential commits Collins and Princely.

On the flip side we have no interest in short, over weight OOS DT's, head cases like Harris, or scrubs like Ellison.

Imploding locker room? I mean I guess you could say that about any class. Nobody expected all of the attrition/issues with our '16 class. Better not to bring up that point bc it just sounds aggy. Their OL is not as bad as you guys make it out to be. CB is poor but the front 7 prospects they're getting is going to help with that a bit.

7 minutes ago, Bruh Man said:

Their OL has finished 97th and 93rd in sack rate the last two years. If you don't think that's bad please direct me to the bad offensive lines. They don't have any tackles on the roster just like at FSU.

It's not shocking they can't block in pass pro.

The only reason Jimbo is even at A&M is because his shitty recruiting at FSU collapsed in on him both from locker room cancers and shitty Olines which is the exact same thing he is doing again in college station.

aggy is still living off the Leal recruitment when it comes to DL.

But they offered Ossai, Graham, Coburn, Ojomo, Sweat, Warren, Broughton, and Collins.

There is also no doubt that would have taken Sanders if he had any interest at all in aggy.
