What is it? it's a pad (the spikes are soft) that you put your extra fly line in so it doesn't fall in the water, tangle on the boat and is otherwise accessible for smooth casting. I let out about 50 feet of line when we are hunting for reds and that's a lot of excess line to be just lying there without something to keep it in place. some use buckets instead. on calm days such tools may be optional for some, but on windy days they are pretty much a necessity for fly fishing. in that pic I have a fish on the line and it's taken all the slack and I've got it on the reel so you can't see how that pad is used here. January 21Jan 21 Popular Post My boat is still in the yard getting work done, but 2 weekends ago in the Rockstar Tournament out of our marina in Quepos, CR the team I’ve fished many tournaments with won what is believed to be the largest payout in the world ever for an all release tournament. My former full time captain and now part time captain plus my current captain and a few friends were on the team. They swept both daily jackpots, all sonar release divisions, and the overall jackpots for a total of 1.16 million dollars. As a side note Michael Jordan brought his boat Catch 23 down for the season and fished the tournament. He won the Day 1 marlin jackpot for 180,000.

February 13Feb 13 Town Lake used to be one of the best big bass lakes in the state. Then they put grass carp in the lake to "manage vegetation" and they destroyed the big bass habitat. Good to see it's rebounding. Maybe Nicole needs an award from Parks and Wildlife for her work adding nutrients to the lake.

According to discogs, he also played guitar on a couple tracks on the last Charley Crockett record.

February 16Feb 16 Fished the guad two weeks ago with a lawyer buddy and then struck out on the coast hunting reds last week. I think I’m going to take some casting lessons. Hard day, overcast, windy, water was low but fish weren’t really moving. Saw plenty too late, only had 3 legit shots. I need to increase my percentage from 1/4 or 1/5 I net to 1/3 or 1/2. my buddy’s first trout on the fly… Edited February 16Feb 16 by troph
February 26Feb 26 Fished the Pescadora Lady Angler tournament Friday and Saturday out of our home Marina Pez Vela in Costa Rica. 57 teams competing, max 5 girls per boat. They allow hook and hand where a guy can hook the fish and then hand it to a female to reel in or you can go IGFA rules where the girls hook their own fish and earn bonus points. We chose IGFA even though our girls aren’t nearly as experienced as the other teams here. Day 1 was amazing. We bounced up and down between 1st and 7th place all day, finally holding 2nd place for almost the last 3 hours of the tournament. However with 2 minutes remaining a boat caught a doubleheader sailfish to pass us by one fish and knocking us out of the Day 1 money (only 2 boats get paid). Our girls released 20 sailfish out of 38 bites and 2 blue marlin from 2 bites. an amazing job by our team to finish the day that high on the leaderboard. Day 2 didn’t go nearly as well. We went 11/21 on sailfish and 0/2 on blue marlin and just never found the right spot to fish. We still ended up finishing 17th out of 57 teams, and 7th place of all IGFA teams. The girls were so excited about the result they have decided to become a permanent team, practice fishing here whenever possible and also fishing in Guatemala and entering all the female tournaments they can. And the girls- wiring fish to hooking their own fish on circle hooks to rigging baits to the party - they can do it all.
March 4Mar 4 Charleston, SC. Does anyone have any experience fishing around there? There are two or three really helpful threads for food and lodging, but not much for outdoor activities. We are possibly going there at the end of July.

Not sure yet, just researching what is out there. Went offshore fishing twice, both times in Key West with the same outfitter. Really enjoyed ourselves. We’re very, very casual. Your suggestions would be very much appreciated.
March 8Mar 8 I’ve got a buddy looking to try out his drift boat on the Colorado, putting in at Liitle Webberville. Anyone got a recco on a good takeout point down river from there?

Anyone got a recco on a good takeout point down river from there? Big Webbervile? Kidding, kinda. I haven’t looked at flows, so I don’t know how hard he’d have to work, but I think the next takeout spot after Webberville park is at the 969 crossing. There’s a big trailer park right by there, so I don’t know about leaving a vehicle there for a long time.
March 8Mar 8 My guide says San Marcos is about all he can do right now without a lot of effort. I didn’t ask specifically about the Colorado tho. This was a convo about a month ago.
March 9Mar 9 Sailfish Tournament today. 3rd place. Oof. It pays 2 places. 2nd tournament in a row we’ve missed the money by 1 fish. Last time it was with 2 minutes to go, this time was maybe worse because we were 5 fish ahead with just over an hour left. Tough fishing today but Rum Runner killed it today with 22 releases. No one else was able to keep up. We’ve been on the fish the previous 3 days - released 27, then 24, then 30 yesterday but unfortunately our fish just weren’t biting today where we had found them the previous days and we ended up with only 14. Video is one of the two blue marlin we caught 2 days ago. Notable because it’s tiny. Maybe barely over 100 pounds. IMG_0439.mov
March 10Mar 10 Always tough to follow justhookit but my best friend just sent me this from many many years ago. I'm in the middle with the sow, looking unimpressed. Kids don't know how good they have it.Note - I lost my virginity in the back seat of that Oldsmobile. To an actual female human.

I’ve got many pictures like that from back then when my grandfather got me into fishing (Dad doesn’t fish). If he only realized then how much money this sport was going to eventually cost me he would have laughed his ass off. In those days we were so happy fishing on the bank, pier, surf, whatever.

March 13Mar 13 Nephew sent me following report from our ranch lake: “The first one I caught was the biggest at 9lbs, caught a 7, three 6’s, and about 20 other 4-5’s.” He’s a great angler. He and his teammate are first in his region for public high school fishing teams. I’m skiing tomorrow before heading back to Texas. Going to definitely do some fishing at the ranch this weekend.
March 13Mar 13 Not to take away from those accomplishments, but what are you feeding them? I would guess you have a secure setup to prevent pressure from poachers as well. Plus prime genetics on the stock brood. You can manage a tank like you can manage a herd. It’s unnatural but I would do the same. We’ve got 2 large spring fed lakes at our place and I always give my cousins grief about their “unnatural” fishery management habits.

March 13Mar 13 The usual stuff, you know, dropping lots of structure, culling small bass, keeping it stocked with baitfish, and frying would be poachers on the electric fence.Managing vegetation is the big differentiator. Temporarily dropping the lake level every few years and clearing stuff. There are some Aggie consultants that help.Actually, my older cousin restores 1st gen Kawasaki jet skis and races them on one of the lakes, oddly, the fish seem to be unaffected. I’ll show up after a testing session and still get a fish on every cast.
March 13Mar 13 The edge of one lake is on a spring used for eons by native Americans, Spanish missionaries, and everyone else traversing the deep east Texas piney woods, so a fresh clear water source is the key. I was just born lucky.

March 17Mar 17 Fished reds out of rockport today (flyrod). Landed 50% of the reds I was supposed to catch. Ended up with 4 nice slots. That’s a solid performance for me. Blind cast twice into a school of large mullet and landed two iddy biddy reds. Good times. Edited March 18Mar 18 by troph
March 17Mar 17 Jax loves the skiff, heck he loves all boats. He’s still figuring out the reds when we catch them but he’s already learned how to stay out of my way. He’s pretty much solidified his place on the boat every time. Edited March 17Mar 17 by troph
