Fishing trip with my son after picking him up in camp.  Rio Grande cutthroats caught last Sunday evening at an extremely isolated lake in southern Colorado.

Anyone experienced with bank fishing at Lake Pflugerville? I've been skunked several times, mostly fishing along the south shoreline and the dam.  Would I have better luck on the north side? Or that marshy area on the west side, along Becker Farm Road? Thanks for any tips...

As a side note, maybe my eyesight isn't so hot, but I never see a lot of aquatic life there. (Minnows, perch, frogs, crayfish, etc.)  I also rarely see bass jumping or feeding, compared to other lakes I've fished. I'm not sure that lake has a well-established ecosystem. You need that to support the gamefish at the top of the food chain.

People do, but...it's much more productive, particularly this time of year, if you're in a kayak and fishing the inner edges of the weed beds where it drops to deeper water.

That's Lucy. She washed up about 6 months ago and the locals have been dressing her up ever since.

Oddly I was thinking about bank fishing with a lot of growth near the bank the other day when I was playing around with a new lightwieght casting rod in a small lake in Katy.   But there was mossy growth everywhere cloer to the bank.  But deeper out there was clean water. And then I thought about the Bobber Stopper rigs we use to fish the jetty! We use the adjustable depth bobber stopper rigs to control the depth of the bait,  to NOT get repeatedly hung up ont he rocks.

I wondered if a bigger rod with longer casting distance and heavier line to drag shit back though the growth if you do get a bite.   So you could cast out past the growth and have a bait suspended in clean water.  Would likely take some playing around with, but if you are getting blanked anyway.  I also wondered if something like the synthetic shimp fish bit baits might work for white bass in fresh water.  As everything eats shrimp, right?

But it might work.  And if it does, you will have a productive fishing hole!

When I was young I fished Coleto Creek lake a lot along the bank, and would just wade out far enough to cast to the outer edges of the weedbeds. It worked pretty well but I'm not really keen on wading around in murky water anymore, especially when I'm not familiar with the topography under the surface.

Kayak is definitely a good way to do it, but with my body size and shape, that would inevitably result in me appearing in a viral "fat man thinks he can ride in a canoe" video.

Did you ever encounter any alligators?  I've heard there are a bunch of them in there.

No, I never saw anything like that. I was spooked by some kind of bigass gar once.

This was way back in the early and mid-1980s so I don't know what may have changed there. But the public park there was a pretty decent place for bank & wade fishing.

Just don’t be this guy.

Hey, Fuck You man! That guy is awesome, any of us wouldn’t be the drip off his paddle.

Went out and fished surf last weekend with a friend on his boat around Surfside.  We crushed the trout and had limits early.  Then went after reds and never found them.  A surf bite is so much fun.  I started with Super Spook bone topwater and then switched to white talcs.  They were hitting everything.

I’m headed to Port O this weekend to wade fish for what I assume is trout and reds. This is a vendor trip so don’t have all the details yet. Any suggests on rigs besides what you mentioned above? I haven’t been saltwater fishing in like 10 years.

My work trip was in the fall but always had great luck with a gold spoon.

Like the bone super spook topwater, a gulp shrimp under a popping cork, a strike pro hunchback (pink is my best color), and then just a paddle tail on a jighead -- white and chartreuse is my go to.

Gulp shrimp under a popping cork might be your best bet this time of year.

Gold spoon is redfish crack.  Bone or red/white super spook, red/white or chartreuse/white paddle tail on a jighead for trout and redfish.

red head/white body one knocker spook, mansfield knocker topwater, marker 212 rig, white gulp shrimp/cajun thunder

Chicken on a Chain Bass Assassin paddletail on a 1/8 or 1/4 jighead.  And a bone Spook Jr.

Sounds like the newest skateboard/snowboard maneuver.

I need to try the marker 212 rig.  Have heard it works well.

It's just a tighter way to fish a mauler imo.  Tighter like a mauler with more beads than stroke.

Pescado!  do you have a favorite carp fly for Buchanan?  the cove in my 'hood is infested.

Rio Banditos, carpinators, Wooly boogers, carpenter ant flies…even small (like #6) bonefish flies like Crazy Charlie’s work in “earthy” colors. Tans, greens, subtle peach/orange.

The boy and I were just talking about getting over there and fishing. Hoping this rise makes the ramp at Cedar Point useable

Thanks!

the end of the ramp in my hood is underwater again, but it's not quite enough to float my boat off the trailer.  guys with smaller skiffs are launching there, and of course the sea doos.   for me, it was good just to get the motor wet for a bit.  I really dread the circus at the Burnet county ramp.

Still rising, or has it petered out?

I hate messing with it in general.  And mostly wade fish, so artificials are my preference.  Gulps are close enough.

why catch fish all day long with live bait when you can torture yourself fishing (and not catching) with a fly rod and an artificial??

People who use gulps are also dumb enough to get out of a perfectly good dry comfortable boat and slog around casting./end Sabine/LA rant.

I'm really just giving y'all shit because currently all my fishing is in places non-conducive to wading, and I have easy access to whatever live I want.

Prior to losing my beachfront house to Ike I spent incalculable hours tossing tout tails, spoons, and mirrOlures from the 2nd sandbar, and on the backside of East Bay. Hell, my dad owned the sporting goods store.

At some point I need to go through the locker containing a dozen fly rods and reels. And I have a glass presentation case full of redfish flies my dad tied.

This will occupy the 2nd half of my midlife crisis.

Ok dumb question time.

Do you right-handed people use left hand cranked baitcasters/spinning reels? I cast lefty and crank righty, does that mean I fish left or right-handed? Same with fly rods.

I ask because dad was right handed and after he died I had to convert a dozen spinning reels to RH crank.

I suspect I’m about to convert a half dozen fly reels/spools to the same.

But if I go search “baitcasting reels” everything comes up, generally speaking, with RH cranks.

So am I really a RH fisherman or was dad a righty who fished lefty?

Legit question as I consider myself lefty but I golf righty and throw/catch lefty. And I know I’m goofy AF because that's how I skateboard/snowboard.

Do you by chance remember Gibson’s’ on 11th in Beaumont?

Yes sir! But more than that, my grandfather lived on 11th ave in Port Arthur DIRECTLY behind the PA Gibson's. Middle school Pescado spent HOURS perusing the sporting goods department almost daily in the summers. There wasn't shit else to do, and Gibson's had AC. The gun department might have been the closest thing to a basement in SE Texas. I was there so much, the employees would ask me if they had something and where it was located any time a customer asked them. I was 100% certain that Gibson's would be my part time job when I got old enough, but it had closed by then, and became the Bogle Supply warehouse.

That's one of the more confusing questions in fishing, I think. I'm the same as you, cast with left hand, and reel with right. I always ask the shop to set up any new fly reel for "Right hand retrieve"...I think that's the correct industry designation.

I also throw left but golf AND swing a baseball bat righthanded.

If I had know you back then I’d have put you on the payroll. Running the Beaumont location was so fun except when fishing/hunting license renewal days came around. Had to almost break the ballpoint pen to do those triplicate forms.

And, of course, everytime all the guns were stolen.

One of our assistant managers was an Academy founder.

On a bait caster I cast and retrieve with my right on a fly rod I cast with my right and retrieve with my left.  Spinners same as a fly rod.
