June 25Jun 25 I am righty on everything. I grew up using a baitcaster the majority of the time so when I started saltwater fishing and bought spinning gear, it felt too awkward to reel with my left.

A couple of times people looked at me like a leper for switching the handle on a spinning reel to the right side.
June 26Jun 26 Just got this in the mail. Great deal on a great rod. Over half off. TFO Tactical inshore

July 4Jul 4 Chewbacca what did you end up going with? Rod/reel porn pics aren't loading for some reason... Scott rod and Ross Colorado reel. Needless to say, I blew the budget but I love it. I'll get a pic.
July 7Jul 7 Was certainly targeting bigger fish and hoped to get some keeper calico bass and hopefully a yellowtail. But it wasn’t to be. Fished all over both trolling a rapala and just got hounded by mackerel. Caught a couple short calicos on the plastic (see attached). But when I’m bored on the boat, I throw a 4lb test spinner over the side and typically get little pinners. And that happened again. Did get a whitefish once on the tiny spinner that my boy and I added to a fat calico we caught and made good fish tacos. But this sheephead was my fattest fish I got to the boat when I was just fucking around. I knew if I tried to boat it on 4 lb test the line wouldn’t be able to lift it out. But I didn’t want gaff hi: because I have no interest in boating one fish to filet. But they are really tasty. Look at those teeth. They scour the sand and rocks for crustaceans. And they taste like crab. And they are a super weird fish. All sheephead are born female, and as they age (like this guy) they turn male.
July 7Jul 7 And I should mention I put my wife on the ferry at 2p today and am just cold chillin. Moving to the boating thread.
July 14Jul 14 My son has been going harder and harder into fishing as he’s gotten older. Now at 13, he’s fishing as much as he can in this north Texas heat.Every extra dollar he collects goes towards gear.I finally joined in on the fun again after not really fishing for the last couple of decades.Picked up a new Abu Garcia baitcaster and immediately remembered how easy it is to backlash that bad boy.Took a minute to dial it in on different lures but I’m back on the fishing “boat” again. But it’s usually more fun to watch him fish
July 15Jul 15 Rojo Jr upgraded his PB Tarpon in Belize last week. Family trip, so only broke away for a day. I fed a big one, but it spit the hook fast, then had another 70ish pounder swipe at my fly and miss (I probably took it away from it)

July 21Jul 21 Popular Post Went to Baffin Bay with some guys in my fly fishing group this weekend. Headed down on Thursday with a stop at Reese Bros Barbecue in the way down (see Texas BBQ thread). Stayed at a really nice AirBNB right on the bay. Shortly after the sun went down, three of us went to a house with a lighted pier. I caught three keeper trout and ten more undersized - all on a small, white, clouser I tied the day before. At the end of the night, there was nothing left but white thread and bread chain eyes. Next morning four of us met up with a guy that ferried us out about half way down the Kennedy shoreline. Started with a tan Gurgler which paid off with two trout. After the sun went up, I switched to my second small white clouser. Over the next hour, I landed nine trout, a ladyfish, a piggy perch, and a black drum. Moved to another spot and caught a nice ladyfish on a gold spoon fly. Back at the house at 12:30. That night we went to Baffin Bay Seafood Company for a good dinner, then back to the lighted pier. It was more wind which made fly casting difficult, so I casted a few times and landed a trout, then headed back. Those that stayed caught several more trout, some on a Tenkara rig. Saturday back out to the Kennedy shoreline, almost out to the Laguna Madre. Fishing wasn't as good and the wind came earlier. I landed a couple trout on a flash minnow fly, but others were ready to move on to another spot. Those were my last fish of the day. Hit a couple more spots on the way back, but I didn't have any further luck. There were a few more fish caught by others, including a black drum and two redfish. Chilled at the house the remainder of the afternoon and she trout, redfish, and drum for dinner. I was more than pleased with my first trip to Baffin Bay.
July 21Jul 21 Yeah, well, I went to the creek out back after work yesterday. Look upon my catch, ye mighty, and despair.
July 21Jul 21 Thinking about adding one of these for my 5wt rod. I'm not 100% sure I like the styling, but you can't get the Ross Animas with the Coors logo anymore. It's only the Cimarron now. What do you think? It's heavy, too. 5.8 oz for the 4/5 wt reel. Edited July 21Jul 21 by Chewbacca
July 24Jul 24 Had a good Friday and Saturday fishing about 30 miles offshore of Quepos. 3 blue marlin 23 sails and a lot of yellowfin. Currently headed 100 miles offshore for a 3 day trip for marlin, bite has been pretty good lately so hoping it holds up.
July 24Jul 24 Slow so far. Released 1 blue marlin 1 sail. Missed another blue and had another billfish bite but not sure what it was. Moving about 30 miles now to another spot. 0244.mp4
July 25Jul 25 Ended up with a grand slam - 3/5 blue marlin marlin, 1/2 stripe marlin, 2/2 sailfish. Can’t complain but moving 90 miles overnight.

August 10Aug 10 Popular Post Spent a couple hours fishing this morning on the San Gabriel. A bunch of changes since the flood. Ended up catching several sunfish and largemouth bass. The Rio Grande Ciclids are my favorite, though.

Sinking leader and a large injured bait fish fly. A bright white and chartreuse one and a pitch black one. Nada. post-flood visibility is still real bad, water is still really brown, and you can only see 18-24 inches tops. Edited August 10Aug 10 by troph

As an exclusively fly fishing angler I gravitate to the masochistic ways of fishing and not catching. I rarely fish LT but I think two things are coming soon - night fishing off the back of my dock with my under water boat lights on, and the white bass runs in the winter up river on the Colorado.

You should also try some large top water flies up in the newly submerged grass.

Where I can fish there is no submerged grass (we are on the cliff side) unless I crawl way up in the back of the cove but that’s a good idea. I assumed with the heat the big ones are 10-20 feet down, so trying to entice them up with an injured bait fish pattern. I wasn’t trying that hard. I have some big as poppers if we take the boat out this week I might bring my rod with me, bee creek around the corner from us has a ton of submerged grass.

My dad used to have a cabin on Bee Creek. We've caught multiple 5+ pound bass back there - fishing conventional. Most bass caught back there were on 2" smoke twist tailed grubs. Point being that it wouldn't be difficult to catch bass on your injured fish pattern. There also used to be several docks with great lights for fishing at night.

Nothing better than a waterfront spot on a deep, quiet cove. I might have a mouse top water and some large poppers to go with the sinking line set up. Might give it a try this week.
August 16Aug 16 Silly good fishing at the Costa Rican seamount FADs right now. Headed in from 3 days of fishing. We raised over 50 marlin, got 37 bites and caught 24 blue marlin plus 1 stripe marlin and a handful of sails by accident. Almost everything was on a switch from a teaser to a pitch bait. It was mostly steady fishing but caught on fire from 7 to 9 in the morning yesterday when my wife let me pitch everything and I managed to go 5/6 on blues, 1/1 stripe marlin, and 1/1 sailfish. Tons of fun. Normally my wife does most of the pitch baiting but she was tired from the day before. Not the best footage but we are working on getting our GoPro setup to record fish on the teaser and then switching to the bait. You can see the fish on the right teaser and then eat her pitch bait in the middle of the screen. The photo is the stripe marlin. 94B70498-D589-4ADF-A3E0-6F2FDA870A9A.mov
August 23Aug 23 Batshit crazy marlin. These are the scary ones that can easily jump in the boat and make a mess. 7daff5e6-6046-45dc-b684-626de600b831.mov
August 23Aug 23 Popular Post Happy bday to me, turned 50 Thursday. Floated the Provo in Utah yesterday, fished mono line for the first time, took an hour or so to figure it out, river was swift enough to make it fairly technical. Ended up being a great day, caught about 7 mix of rainbows and browns. yes I know my knees look like hell. anyway, I spent the last year dreading 50, but so far so good… I think this song is apropos… Edited August 23Aug 23 by troph
August 23Aug 23 Popular Post Spent a week Permit fishing in Mexico at the beginning of August. Permit fishing was tough, but I caught 7 Tarpon between 35 and 100 pounds. The big one whipped my ass. Fought for an hour and forty five minutes on a 10 wt. Dumped most of my backing twice, leadered the fish 4 times, but never got a hand on it. Finally broke it off after it abraided the 80 lb shock tippet as I was trying to turn its head near the boat for the 5th time. Broke it off almost a mile from where I hooked it in about 40 ft of water. I did manage one small Permit.
August 24Aug 24 Spent the morning fishing Salado Creek. Lots of wading in the cool, spring-fed waters. Caught plenty of small largemouth and spotted bass. Only thing worth pulling the camera out for was this beautiful, Northern Cottonmouth. As he was crossing to my side of the creek when I took the picture, I moved on shortly thereafter. Also got to meet @Damor and his son at the local brewery afterwards. Nice way to spend a Sunday.
August 25Aug 25 Not sorry that I missed Snek. I almost missed @Jerry Callo as I was looking for Jerry Gallo, but fortunately everything worked out. My son and I had a great time despite not catching much of note, but it was great to get out and to meet some really cool folks in the San Gabriel club. Joined up and hoping to make some more trips. This was as good as it got for me today, and evidently I'm dead and/or turning into Grimace by the color of my hands. Nice spot here which got chest deep quickly, until I slipped and made it neck deep. At least the leeches here are tiny.
