August 25Aug 25 Any of yall ever been down to the Destin Fishing Rodeo? Son gets a week off of school in October and I’m considering it.

Permit fishing was tough, but I caught 7 Tarpon between 35 and 100 pounds. The big one whipped my ass. Fought for an hour and forty five minutes on a 10 wt. Dumped most of my backing twice, leadered the fish 4 times, but never got a hand on it. Finally broke it off after it abraided the 80 lb shock tippet as I was trying to turn its head near the boat for the 5th time. Broke it off almost a mile from where I hooked it in about 40 ft of water. I did manage one small Permit. Awesome. Where were yall fishing out of? Looks like plenty of wading and poling or did yall just jump out for the pics?

Ascension Bay Lodge in Punta Allen Mexico. Just jumped out for the pic. A lot easier to deal with those fish in shallow water. They can't dive under the boat, and the guide can walk with them and cut them off so they don't get far away once you get them close the first time.

Only day fished it and it was windy AF and cloudy. Only caught one bone but its a great fishery.

My son and I had a great time despite not catching much of note, but it was great to get out and to meet some really cool folks in the San Gabriel club. Joined up and hoping to make some more trips. This was as good as it got for me today, and evidently I'm dead and/or turning into Grimace by the color of my hands. Nice spot here which got chest deep quickly, until I slipped and made it neck deep. At least the leeches here are tiny. i was waist deep in brushy creek once and the next day had what looked like mini chicken pox or measles all over the parts of my body that were submerged and they itched like chigger bites for over a week. that's the last time I was super aggressive wading (above my shins) warm water creeks.

August 26Aug 26 @troph I used to wade in Keens and get lots of that on the shins and ankles from the wee leeches. Although I felt goofy about it at first, I switched to my wading boots and gravel guards and it's no longer a big issue around here. As I understand, they mostly live in the muck at the bottom, and those provide enough coverage to reduce my chances of a good bloodletting. Traction is also way better, although I still eat it on that slick limestone more often than I'd like.

I wear my boots and guards wading here or anywhere except sometimes in cold water I’ll wear hiking shoes. Waist deep is just dumb in a warm water creek. And well, I’ve been known to do some really dumb shit.

August 30Aug 30 So what happens when you do a day trip on Thursday and catch 17 sailfish and 1 blue marlin, then go back out on Friday to the same place 30 miles from the marina and catch 7 blue marlin and 4 sailfish? And your entire crew wants to fish tomorrow. You decide not to fish tomorrow so you can watch us beat the fuck out of Ohio St. But we will go again on Sunday. Hook ‘em 🤘 IMG_2882.mov
August 30Aug 30 Two Funny fishing stories that relate - about 20 years ago we were rented a place on the bay for week on Padre Island. Well I wade fished and kayaked fished for three days looking forward to our guide trip on Tuesday. Well... by Monday night my crotch was basically just this side of bleeding. I knew there was a decent chance we were going to hop out of the boat and wade again, and that quite frankly was sort of terrifying. I had really screwed up, as my walking gait was that of an extremely bow legged man. So I decided to "risk it all!" This is where being married has it's advantages, because I have some good friends, but not to call for this. I decided to lay back, cover up the boys with my hands and let the wife spray NuSkin on the raw skin. Well if you have ever used NuSkin the stuff works, but it also burns like holy hell. And the last place you want it is on your privates. Indeed the pain of the spray was brutal. But several coats later that edge of blood raw skin had at least some protection. The idea worked so well that honestly if I knew for sure I was going to be wading a few days in a row, I might do this preemptively. After that episode I have envisioned a Restaurant with a logo of a very bow legged fisherman, called "Wader's Walk." ----------- The second story is about a day long debate about the pros and cons of marriage of a group groomsmen, flat fishing the day of the rehearsal dinner. Well the pros and cons went as you can imagine. Pros of companionship, newlywed sex, and intimacy were the primary pros. Banging strange, complete freedom, and no commitment were the other side of that same coin. It was is often the case fishing all day, a subject revisited again and again over the course of the day. I can still remember Ted the boat owner saying, "I'v got it!" I was standing on the tower over the engine when he proved that there was a singular advantage to marriage (as in the first story). Ted then proclaimed, "I remember a couple years ago, we went dove hunting in Mexico, and I got a damn tick right between my balls and my asshole..." Pausing for effect. Then he said, "Well, I got some good friends... trailing off. The vision of me calling a buddy to come over and remove the tick with some hot tweezers shot through my mind and I laughed so hard that I damn near fell off the tower. Anyhow tight lines kids, and let's fuck up those Buckeyes today!
September 23Sep 23 Finally able to sneak out for two hours middday on Sunday. Hardly been able to fish this Summer but really looking forward to this Fall. The water is already starting to cool a little bit. Not a ton of action but at least able to get one for the grill. Barely legal at 27.5”.

September 23Sep 23 Back in Texas after a great summer “off-season” in CR. Had some great marlin days and then at the end of August and early September the sailfish bite went crazy. Released 90 in 2 days and the 2nd day we ran out of bait. Overall in our last 2 weeks we released well over 200 billfish, mostly sails with some marlin mixed in. We are now taking a few months off and then will head back to CR at the end of November. 2nd video is a blue marlin double. First fish is on the right teaser and we get a great bite from it. 2nd fish comes on the left teaser as we are clearing lines. 666923DC-DAF1-4D85-8656-1F13023D0ED3.mov Edited September 23Sep 23 by justhookit
October 1Oct 1 I don't have any gigantic fish to post here, but I do love to fish. If any of y'all ever stop through Oahu and want a totally relaxing day of shore fishing, there's a spot I go to at Waimanalo Beach. I swim my line out about a 100 yards or so and drop it with 3-5 oz. triangle sinker. I am a patient fisherman so I just put some squid or cut bait on the line and enjoy the day and usually bring a book to read until I hear the line start to go out quickly.
October 1Oct 1 Hopefully the Port A fish Gods will give me something to post in the coming days. 4 hours ago, UpperWestside said: I don't have any gigantic fish to post here, but I do love to fish. Nothing like hearing that line sing! I think that my time standing on the edge of the surf, watching the first glow of dawn, eventually shoot out that first ray of sun, is probably as close to God as I will ever get on earth. It's just completely uplifting, with the awe and beauty of what each day can offer us. It's a great reminder to try to live in the moment and find things to appreciate each and every day. October 4Oct 4 Well fishing has been tough in Port A the last couple days. Tons of mullet in the second gut at the beach first day, then where did they go? But overall got lucky as hell, after getting blanked at the Jetty (saw a couple flounder pulled in). Decided to go where I wanted to originally the fish pass jetty, just to check out driving conditions for the next day. Well I made it out and was sitting in the car contemplating whether to gear up again. And I noticed it looked like some activity on the inside.. then a guy comes scurrying over the rocks with a red in each hand. So I grab my gear and I start scrambling. A big school of reads had apparently trapped a big school of bait between the the little nubs of the fish pass. And they were hitting damn near everything. I saw them caught on shrimp, rattle trap, soon, swim bait, cut mullet, and in my case a big ass 3/4 oz jig head and an a muleet with the tail cut off. Took me about 30 seconds to hook up along with everyone else. I along with 8 or 10 other people at least caught limits. From parking my car to walking back with a stringer was just over an hour. The first pic is of my third cast of the first day, and it was about the most exciting thing I caught then. Little skippy trying to eat a NRLB bait half his size! Reds in the cooler isn't a great pic, but it made me grin like a mofo! 26,27 and 28 inch reds in 30 minutes of fishing was just what the doctor ordered! Hookem! and tight lines.
October 4Oct 4 Nice! We spent part of this week at Galveston State Parkin the RV. We took the kayaks and I did a paddle back into the reclaimed marsh solo on Wed and with the wife on Thursday. I found one tailing red on Wed and was able to catch it only to tape out at 28.5-29”. On Thursday I got one keeper and two short reds and an dink trout. We enjoyed the paddle but spent the rest of the day slumped in a chair on the beach. Probably should have tried the surf a bit as it had 4’ visibility but was very happy with the reds. Chasing them in shallow water is probably my favorite inshore fishing.
October 6Oct 6 One of my older buddies is retired and fishes Sabine. A lot. About 4 times a week on average. And he basically acts as an unpaid guide, donating trips as a raffle prize to just about every area charity. He caught the flesh eating bacteria on his hand, fishing from a boat. All I know is he was in the ICW. Currently in the burn unit at John Sealy hospital in Galveston, and I’m not posting the photos but his right arm below the elbow has no skin. It’s gruesome. As a PSA, I guess it’s a good idea to use hand sanitizer or carry some dude wipes, especially as I get older.

I saw a post that someone got it bad in West Matty recently and lost their leg below the knee. That time of year, I guess. Reminds me I need to replace the hand sanitizer in my boat box as it's probably two years old.

Explain to me how you don't end up with some cuts on your hands after fishing a couple days? I need to put some wipes in the truck. Prayers for your friend.
October 6Oct 6 Went out in west bay on friday but was windy as hell. Found some reds and specs at Green’s lake but no keepers. Bad luck fishing is still a great day

I know vibrio is native to the coastal environment but anecdotally it seems like it's much much more common. Every year I hear stories of at least someone getting it. I always heard that tepid pools of hot, dirty marsh water holds the highest concentration which is why his catching it in the ICW seems odd as hell. Hoping he comes out of it with everything still where it's supposed to be.
October 7Oct 7 Oh man that’s rough. I wonder if he had any other immune issues. Seems like I had always heard that the guys that got it usually had something else going on too that they might not yet have know about.
October 7Oct 7 i guess they just decided where to shear the skin back to, in order to stop the spread. Looks pretty gnarly. And yes there is almost always some other immunity issue that makes older people more susceptible. Wonder if they are going to try and use pig bladder to help regrow that skin?
October 7Oct 7 He’s still updating Facebook and says they are going to try skin grafts. I told him I’ve got a box of elbow length latex gloves for when he gets to fish again.
October 7Oct 7 A few years ago, I remember reading of a guy who got vibrio wade fishing in the fall. The funny thing is he was wearing waders and got vibrio on his leg.
October 12Oct 12 Yesterday when the hook went in my index finder and tore out, I thought of this thread. And whats funny is it seems like most of my hook injuries have been on a little damn hardhead. Same on this day. But hell since it was my index finder it took forever to stop the bleeding. I decided that it impossible to fish without getting cut up somehow. On the bright side I pulled out another limit of redfish at the Fish Pass Jetty. And I during the hang on the beach pre-OU I managed to pick up a nice trout in the surf on the last rod I was about to reel. Surf fishing seemed pretty tough, as I didn't see many bent poles. It was nice to get an applause from the folks next to us when I pulled out the trout. Port A fishing report is Reds good on the rocks anywhere. The irony is tides were so high that I was unable to rustle up any mullet. So I have the survivor shimp from my pint the day before. Two pinch weights and free lining the shrimp was fire on the outgoing tide. Being in the right spot helped a ton as I was the one guy catching. Then gave up my spot tot he kids next to me and they started catching. Showed them what I was doing and they switched up with mullet and started reeling them in as well. What I will target next week is Flounder! Saw a guy pull out a huge 24ish inch flounder on mullet, and another smaller on a purple and white paddle tail the guy was jigging into the rocks. So the flounder run has started!
October 12Oct 12 Had my 35th HS reunion last night. About 9 I looked at one of my best friends who is staying in my guest bedroom and said tomorrow looks nice. So we did an Irish goodbye and went this morning.Unfortunately I skunked him as I wanted him to do the catching.
October 12Oct 12 Down in Destin for the fishing rodeo. Going out tomorrow and Wednesday. Checking out some weigh ins now.
October 12Oct 12 At ACL. Apparently, they have live shrimp, if you’re looking.@Pescado_Rojo thinks it’s more likely that it smells like fresh dead. With patchouli and weed added as attractant.
