December 22, 20241 yr I like that a couple of times on short yardage, the Horns QB went under center allowing a quick hitter into the line. It seems though that they never tried a counter or fake to one side, then handoff to the other. I'd like to see more under center plays, period.

They love it when we go for it on 4th down and get it though.
December 22, 20241 yr Yeah, I don’t get the “take the points” crowd. Our FG kicker is never a guarantee for points.

We were blowing people off the ball and the defense was in a good spot. I can somewhat understand playing to make a 2 score game a 3 game in the second half but it was the second quarter. That isn’t the time to play conservative and start counting possessions. I’d have to go back and see the replay but watching it live I wasn’t thrilled with the way Blue navigated his blocking on that play.

He's questionable outside 40 for sure. In case you're bad at math 36 yards is less than 40. It wasn't just the decision to go for it, but the play call and players in for the call. A bad coaching call no matter how you choose to slice it. Edited December 22, 20241 yr by BurntEyes

I didn't say anything about the decision...just that Bert has been automatic from that range, even through this shitty year for him. There’s a feel for when it makes sense or not. To me, when you are up 14, you just take the points (if you make it) and get your defense reset. You keep the momentum. Sure if you make it and keep rolling 7 is better, but at that point there’s no reason for it. Just keep stacking points and keep the pressure on them.
December 22, 20241 yr It was a bad decision. You’re at home, you’re up 2 scores, your defense was scored on but had tightened up. The risk wasn’t worth the reward, take the points leave no opportunity for Clemson to find momentum. Sark does this a lot - he takes the chance and it backfires and it’s 10-15 mins of game time where the other team has the momentum. Don’t give it to them. Now if the FG kept it a two score game then yeah, go for it, but when you can extend your lead by a full possession when you’re already up 2 you take the points. Every fucking time.

In this case 3 or 7 points it’s a 3 possession lead. So in that sense they aren’t much different but going for it has more risk. It would be much different if it was still a 2 possession lead with 3 points. But it wasn’t.
December 22, 20241 yr One thing I remembered today that I haven't seen commented on: The play before Bert's FG kick to go up 21 points, we were on the right hash, where Bert has problems this season. Sark called a play that was a run to the left, so that if we didn't get the TD the ball was in the middle of the field. We didn't get the TD, but Bert made the FG. That was some solid situational awareness in the moment by Sark.
December 22, 20241 yr Plus his inability to stretch leads from 2 to 3 score leads with his bonehead fourth down calls. Over and over and over again. Exactly. Kick the fg that we know Bert can make. Pushing the lead to 3 possessions puts a lot more stress on the opposition.

It's a losing trend that has been in the process of being phased out for a while now. I know it's scary but ya'll gotta let go of your warm, cozy field goals.

December 22, 20241 yr Sark got himself a nice little Christmas bonus. I wish players were also eligible for milestone based bonuses. That seems like it would be a stand-up thing to do, getting some cash to the players and increasing the spotlight on Texas. Things like that could increase the incentive for players to come to Texas or portal here.

December 22, 20241 yr What’s funny is all year on CFB 25 they had the “wrong” playbook for Texas where you could line up in I-formation. I put Gibson in at full back and had some of the best offense success running and play action or just passing out of the I formation. Then they “fixed” Texas playbook and I suck with all these non functional motion swing bubble RPO shit that doesn’t work in the game. In reality instead of running that sweep Sark should’ve ran a roll out with Gibson in the flat. Edited December 22, 20241 yr by Zeus

December 22, 20241 yr What the analytics folks fail to understand is late in the second quarter when you can go up 3 scores you change the game. Now a single score doesn’t get it within 1, and assuming 4-5 possessions in the second half, and 1 more in the first half, your opponent has to hold you to no scores the rest of the way out and has to score 50% of the time. That alone is worth it because how you can force a team out of their game plan. if you miss the 4th and they score now it’s a 1 score game at half, that’s a drastic turnaround. Going up 3 scores at half time is a big fucking deal. I don’t care if it’s 4th and 2. You take the points. now if 3 points doesn’t do that then yeah, go for it. and I just haven’t seen any analytics take into account game situation just likelihood of success on a particular down and distance.
