Phil Steele has us rated at all four offensive position groups (Rec group includes TE).  His rankings are spmewhat flawed, but overall they are probably as good as any of those pre-season rags.

Yep. They should leave Venables at the meth cook house/team hotel in Stillwater if they're not 6-2 or 7-1 at the time.

I absolutely expect a bounce-back record wise. Mostly because their schedule is absolute trash. Three buy-a-wins out of conference and dodging KSU, Tech, and Baylor in league play. A TCU team that lost a ton from last year's run is probably their toughest conference game aside from Texas, and it's at home. Bedlam is on the road - a rivalry game but OSU is melting down and Gundy finds ways to lose that game; beyond that their toughest conference road game will probably be Cincinnati.

I expect the quality of their team to be just marginally better, but that might very well be good enough to get to 9-10 wins.

I wouldn't be surprised if Malzhan goes into Norman and beats them.

@ Cincy maybe?  Campbell seems to always play them close and has beaten them a few times.

Mike Roach or Gerry Hamilton. A guy who travels 40k miles per year visiting recruits, or a guy who has 40,000 loyalty punches at Baskin Robbins.

I do not credit a single recruiting report that uses "academics" as a data point. Why is the kid not choosing from Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Duke, and Stanford then? I am very proud of my UT degree but I think this board and others get way too spun up about that. A high school football player that "cares about academics" is just one that's not going to start in the gen ed program. McKinley will be surrounded by a bunch of boat salesman, beverage distributors, and lawyers with LSU law degrees (the only kind in Louisiana) telling him you can still get rich going to LSU. The pressure to go to LSU when you are just a regular high school student (shitty basketball player profile aside); I cannot imagine the amount of folks buzzing around that kid right now telling him to go to LSU, computer science interest or not. I'll believe it when I see it when we get one of those big hogmollies out of there.

Do they even enforce academic eligibility anymore? Stetson Bennett was at Georgia for 6 years and failed to graduate. Denver Harris allegedly had a 0.0 GPA and transferred to LSU.

Speaking as the son of LSU's former Director of Student Judicial Affairs, LSU is very good at that.

Guess they like the recruit all tackles and develop into guards method because they seem to take 3-4 OT’s every year.

That or they just expect 1-2 of them to portal after 2 years, which is probably not a bad strategy.

And they just signed a 5th OT in this class today in 4* Marques Easley.

1)  MOST may not prioritize or even consider academics.  But " ... a single recruiting report ..." ? Are you kidding me?

You don't think academics were a factor in Justice Finkley coming here?  Or Hayden Conner?  Or in Elijah Higgins and that OL picking Stanford?

2)  Someone saying academics are important means they should disregard every other factor and make a choice on that basis alone?  Choosing a great blend of academics and football ... that's not consistent with academics being important?  If playing close to home and family are important to Colin Simmons ... why is he considering schools other than UNT/SMU/TCU ??

3) Oh, btw, in many areas of engr, and Comp Science, Texas is up there.  (In CS, they're #11 in undergrad, and #8 in grad, per US News.)  You know who's not ranked ahead of them in CS?  Duke.  Northwestern.  Vandy.  (Debating Texas' academic ranking versus those of the other schools you mentioned isn't central to the point, anyway.  Just saying if you wanted to pick elite CS schools (rep/ranking ahead of Texas) that play competitive football, then other than Stanford, pick Cal.  For elite CS schools that DON'T play high level football, go with CMU or MIT.  Duke/Northwestern/Vandy don't belong in either category.)

McKinley appears to be a rare breed. Louisiana kids, especially those good at football, don't usually go to public school. I'd expect the computer science comments from a kid at Newman or Ursuline. Good for him. I wish him well. Hopefully he'll be a Longhorn.

(Gerry Hamilton) Official review: Where Texas sits with each official visitor from June 16-18 weekend

Quote

Success from a Texas Longhorns official visit weekend can’t be measured in the first few days after it ends. Rather, it takes weeks to fully gauge how fruitful it was for Steve Sarkisian and staff. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the group of 21 recruits who officially visited the Longhorns from June 2-4 and see where the program sits with each roughly a month later.

Running back

Four-star Christian Clark, Phoenix (Ariz.) Mountain Pointe
The result: Committed to #AllGasNoBrakes over Oregon and FSU June 22.

Wide receiver

Four-star Ryan Wingo, Saint Louis (Mo.) University
The result: Texas has true confidence in the race for Wingo with Missouri, Michigan, Tennessee and Georgia involved.

Four-star wide Freddie Dubose Jr., WR, Schertz (Texas) Smithson Valley
The result: Committed to #AllGasNoBrakes over Tennessee and UTSA June 18.

Tight end

Three-star Jordan Washington, Houston (Texas) Langham Creek
The result: Committed to #AllGasNoBrakes over Texas A&M and Arizona State July 4.

Offensive line

Five-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei
The result: Texas has confidence in the battle with Ohio State and Oregon.

Four-star IOL Blake Ivy, League City (Texas) Clear Springs
The result: Texas trying to come from behind against Texas A&M and LSU.

Three-star IOL Eugene Brooks, Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon
The result: Texas is pursuing Ivy. Oklahoma is considered the favorite.

Defensive line

D’Antre Robinson, DL, Orlando (Fla.) Jones
The result: Texas leads Florida and others ahead of a July 21 announcement.

Three-star Isaia Faga, Phenix City (Ala.) Central
The result: Faga flipped to Alabama from Utah June 28.

Three-star Melvin Hills, Lafayette (La.) Lafayette Christian Academy
The result: Texas leads Ole Miss and LSU ahead of a July 12 announcement.

Three-star Malik Blocton, Pike Road (Ala.) High
The result: Committed to Auburn July 8.

EDGE

Four-star Danny Okoye, Tulsa (Okla.) NOAH
The result: Texas is very much in the mix along with LSU, Tennessee and others.

Four-star Jordan Ross, Birmingham (Ala.) Vestavia Hills
The result: Texas trails Florida, Tennessee and LSU with Georgia and Oregon also on the peripheral.

Three-star Deshawn Warner, Goodyear (Ariz.) Desert Edge
The result: Committed to Kansas over Oregon State and Washington July 1.

Linebacker

Three-star Khmori House, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco
The result: Committed to Washington over Oregon State June 26.

Defensive back

Four-star safety Myles Davis, Converse (Texas) Judson
The result: Texas A&M is considered the favorite over Texas ahead of a late August announcement.

Three-star safety Joshua Lair, Missouri City (Texas) Marshall
The result: Texas, LSU and Baylor continue to recruit the walking hit stick ahead of a late July or August decision.

Four-star cornerback Santana Wilson, Scottsdale (Ariz.) Desert Mountain
The result: Committed to #AllGasNoBrakes over Washington and Arizona State June 17.

Four-star cornerback Eli Bowen, Denton (Texas) Guyer
The result: Texas will continue to recruit Bowen into the fall. Oklahoma is considered the team to beat.

I’m no Mike Roach here. The reality is that it’s looking like Blocton has told both camps that he’s going to commit to them, or, at least, that’s how I’m reading it. The Auburn guys are inferring a lot and it isn’t clear how closely they’re communicating with the Auburn staff, so maybe they’re just playing the odds on their end.

If I’m wrong in my insistence on him coming to Texas, I’ll at least be entertained by vitriol headed my direction here.

I mean that is really not saying much. Austin and Nashville are just the only two major cities in the SEC. You can't even really compare them to any other conference destinations.

Baton Rouge, Columbia, and Lexington are more than college towns, mainly by virtue of being state capitals, but very much small cities.

NW Arkansas is unique in that Fayetteville is a college town and it also has the adjacent Walmart/Evangelical Mecca suburb-without-a-city thing going on.

The rest are straight college towns.

Collie Station is Chernobyl.

Ha. If you’d done it intentionally, I didn’t want it to live on in my quote. Wasn’t sure, so I went with better safe than sorry…although the fact that your gif was in an Oscar winning movie that recently is fairly sobering. (Checks notes - 25 years ago? Fuck I’m old.)

How was their Georgia game cancelled but not our Bama game?   I’m glad it wasn’t but what’s the understanding?  Oh Georgia is the favorite and they want the easiest path possible because it’s the SEC and they protect teams….   SEC better get a normal rotation in 2025 instead of this pick and choose shit they do, it’s cowardly as fuck, hints aggy and Georgia.

Probably because this year was the first of the home and home, so the choices were to cancel the return game or just cancel the series.  I doubt Georgia wants to go to Norman without the return game, or vice versa if it was to be in Athens first.

So Georgia and the SEC were afraid?  I’d hate for them to miss out on TN Martin or Ball State….  This scheduling hopefully changes, the SEC is so protective of easy matchups and making teams look good even in conference matchups.  Just go to a set schedule where everyone plays everyone on a set basis vs picking and choosing.

I'm sure they were a factor. I'm not saying it doesn't matter at all, I'm saying that we overrate it. I just severely doubt that a 5* kid from Acadiana that could go anywhere is gonna make his choice based on the computer science department.

This is more true in basketball (or at least was when I went there). 7(or 8, not sure about John Ehret) of the On3 top 10 in Louisiana go to public schools. A lot of the private schools in small town Louisiana were originally established as "religious" schools after Brown v. Board. They have some black athletes, but it ends up with situations like the Clinton, Louisiana public high school being all black despite that town being about 50/50 black/white.

I really really hope we land this kid. Just not holding my breath because he says he wants to be in computer science.

Something must have just changed.  Gerry and the 247 west cost mod had Texas picks for Brooks (247 still does) and Davis is still Fong'd to Texas.
