Texas Recruiting Notes 2024: Bags Don't Beat Bankrolls

Texas cornerback Kris Boyd apologized Sunday for being on Twitter during halftime of an embarrassing 50-7 loss to No. 3 TCU, when he passed along a suggestion that he transfer to Texas A&M.

The freshman retweeted what amounted to an invitation from an apparent supporter of the Aggies, a rival the Longhorns don't play anymore. The tweet read, "Whenever ya'll (sic) are ready to transfer ... we're ready. #Gig'em."

In a statement issued by the university, Boyd said he "personally" apologized to coaches and teammates and said he wanted to "extend my sincerest apology to all of the Longhorn fans and family and everyone at UT."

"In no way did I intend to be disrespectful or disloyal," Boyd said. "I deeply regret my actions and want to reassure everyone that I am 100 percent committed to this team and program. I promise everyone that I will learn and grow from this."

"Something like that, Kris has got a lot of heart," Heard said. "He's going to speak his mind whenever he needs to. I'm not doubting Kris."

if you don't think his time trolling A&M as a recruit or his last 3 years at Texas were worth a damn due to a tweet that he apologized for, then just go migrate back to the football board. you will be much happier there.

Don't know why they would be. I'm positive I saw a quick clip of a collie milker in there.

Getting Texas and Oklahoma has always been the long game for the SEC. Aggy was a pawn to that objective.

Fuck that. Who wants to be with Aggy? We’re going for all those SEC screens…

No championship trophies or heisman trophies featured as they entered. The main thing in that video is SEC commenting on expanding their footprint. By the way We're Texas and ya'll are the SEC. Del Conte please never produce a lame ass video like the one aggy produced.

Damn, all five of our losses were within 7 points. Does that mean we were basically undefeated? (Hint: no)

Shit using aggy math, if we turned our one possession losses into wins, we would have had records of:

2022 - 12-0

2021 - 10-2

2020 - 10-0

2019 - 11-2

2018 - 13-1

2017 - 12-1

2016 - 10-2

3-9 with the Miami game included. And 10-3 at half against UMass shows count for another imo.

Idk I kind of like it. Let's go ahead and claim a couple national championships for 2020 and 2022.

It’s too bad the aggy season didn’t happen in reverse. They would have opened the season with a win against LSU which would have given aggyland early national championship hopes. From there their season falls apart in spectacular fashion as they close out the season ending their bowl hopes with an embarrassing loss to App State. Aggyrollercoaster.thujone

Hmmm. I guess he included the patented Jimbo FG with 10 seconds left to cut it to a 1 possession game vs South Carolina. Jimbo called time out on 1st and goal to kick a FG with 13 seconds left.. That was just amazing. JImbo thought it would be easier to score a TD on the onside kick than 1st and goal.

Percentages from the IT mods

Spoiler

Terry Bussey, WR/ATH, Timpson (Texas)

Eric: 25%. I think he profiles better to the smaller town plus the Aggies have been on him harder for longer.

Justin: 30%. Texas A&M seems to have struck the right chord at this stage.

Gerry: 35%. Texas A&M is the favorite until proven otherwise.

Micah Hudson, WR, Temple (Texas) Lake Belton

Eric: 40%. I think he’ll commit to Texas Tech but I’m not certain he signs there.

Justin: 25%. Texas Tech is the team right now, but let this thing play out over the next five months.

Gerry: My On3 RPM is on 100% to Texas Tech.

Ryan Wingo, WR, St. Louis (Mo.) St. Louis University

Eric: 70%. Texas is the clear leader right now.

Justin: 60%. Texas has put themselves in the mix. Steve Sarkisian and Chris Jackson can make this work. On3 Industry Ranking five-star Mike Matthews picking Tennessee wouldn’t hurt either.

Gerry: 55%. With this one going until December, as of today, there is a lot left in this recruitment.

Brandon Baker, OL, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei

Eric: 45%. I give a slight edge to Oregon as of now.

Justin: 40%. I think Texas has been tremendous to this point, now they just need that Mater Dei-to-Austin pipeline to really start to flow

Gerry: 50%. Texas versus Oregon. The Ducks have gone from being the heavy favorite to in a fight.

DeAndre Carter, OL, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei

Eric: 35%. I think he ends up at USC.

Justin: 35%.

Gerry: 40%. Could go above 50% depending on the September 30th official visit results.

Ory Williams, OL, Buda (Texas) San Marcos

Eric: 30%. Have to get him back on campus. LSU leads from my vantage.

Justin: 25%. Feels like LSU, looks like LSU. But he’s still uncommitted. If he makes it to Austin…

Gerry: 33%. Goes up to 50% if he makes the fall official visit.

Blake Ivy, OL, League City (Texas) Clear Springs

Eric: 30%.

Justin: 25%. Texas A&M was always going to be near the top, surprised he’s this engaged with Texas.

Gerry: 40%. Texas A&M is the team to beat. This one would be a mild upset.

Dominick McKinley, DL, Lafayette (La.) Acadiana

Eric: 45%. We’ll see how motivated Texas is to win this recruitment when it counts.

Justin: 38%. What Gerry said, plus three.

Gerry: 35%. Texas will be one of three finalists. This one is a wildcard. Mom likes the academics at Texas, which helps.

T.J. Lindsey, DL, Bryant (Ark.) IMG Academy

Eric: 45%. This one could have a couple of swings left in it. Auburn is motivated.

Justin: 35%. This increases if Texas really pushes. The IMG hat trick would be nice.

Gerry: 45%. Auburn seemingly has more confidence to begin the week.

D’antre Robinson, DL, Orlando (Texas) Jones

Eric: 65%. Florida is pushing hard, plus his mom might prefer the closer proximity. Bas of now Texas has the lead.

Justin: 65%. Texas and Robinson really clicked since that first junior day. Bo Davis might catch a big fish in Florida.

Gerry: 75%. Still reason to feel good if you are Texas. Florida won’t give up, even if he commits to Texas on July 20.

Colin Simmons, EDGE, Duncanville (Texas)

Eric: 80%. Visits to LSU and probably A&M loom but Texas leads for THE recruitment it has to win this cycle.

Justin: 75%. I like Texas.

Gerry: 65%. Still sitting the same. On3 RPM hasn’t changed.

Zina Umeozulu, EDGE, Allen (Texas)

Eric: 75%. Texas doesn’t have that big of a lead right now but I still think it will be UT when all is said and done. This recruitment could take a while to play out.

Justin: 70%. What Eric said.

Gerry: 75%. As long as the family and Neto are happy with Texas, chances remain good here.

Danny Okoye, EDGE, Tulsa (Okla.) NOAH Homeschool

Eric: 45%. Texas feels like they’re right in the thick of it. This recruitment could end quicker than people realize. Tennessee holds the lead but UT is swinging away.

Justin: 45%. Tennessee got the head start, but Texas has pulled closer in this race. The long game benefits the Horns here.

Gerry: 40%. Tennessee leads and he almost committed to the Vols in late June, but Texas has some level of confidence as well.

Corian Gipson, CB/DB, Lancaster (Texas) High

Eric: 80%. Texas versus Clemson with Texas the favorite. Still.

Justin: 80%. I like Texas over Clemson.

Gerry: 75%. Haven’t changed my On3 RPM.

Kobe Black, CB, Waco (Texas) Connally

Eric: 75%. I think he’ll take visits to LSU and Alabama before deciding but UT has the lead right now.

Justin: 70%. Texas has done the best job with Black and his family since early this year.

Gerry: 70%. Texas still the favorite here. How long this plays out, and if more official visits are made could effect the percentage.

Wardell Mack, CB, Marrero (La.) John Ehret

Eric: 45%. I think Texas has won over the parents but Mack does like Florida. Also, you can’t entirely rule out LSU.

Justin: 45%. I’m starting to dig Terry Joseph’s recruiting chops in Da Boot. Mack would be a steal.

Gerry: 50%. Think this one will come down to Texas versus either Florida or LSU.

Joshua Lair, S, Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Marshall

Eric: 70%. I think he’s probably a take after Texas missed on Myles Davis, but there’s also the chance DB recruiting fills up.

Justin: 65%. If Texas really wants Lair, they’ll get him.

Gerry: 70% if Texas pushes for a commitment.

All of this is speculative and coming from multiple places, so, as always, take it with a few grains of salt. As of yesterday, priorities for uncommitted players are as follows, in the correct order:

-Simmons: Texas will not lose this recruitment due to NIL.

-Robinson: Forget the rankings. Florida has forgotten the rankings too. This one is a big deal.

-McKinley: Texas does not want to lose this recruitment. The risk on this one is his actual love of football, because the tools are all there.

-Baker: Oregon's conference is a problem, but you are still in a fucking NIL fight with Oregon. Ohio State has apparently bowed out. They've exhausted most of what they can promise elsewhere. Did the same for Jackson once OU stepped up.

-Wingo: There is a shot someone goes nuts on this one, but short of that, Texas has made the best case.

-Mack: Yes, Mack.

-Lindsey: Auburn is not fucking around. Neither is Miami. ATM matched the best offer discussion but the player isn't excited about ATM. Texas has to decide how much of a priority signing 5 DT/NT types this cycle. January is not expected to contribute as a freshman. Hills is high upside and a talent and effort maximizer, but his physical gifts aren't on the same level as the uncommitted guys.

-Black: If ATM or Bama make a big play here, Texas is fine at CB. If all things are in the same ballpark, Texas is fine getting him to sign on the line which is dotted.

That's it in terms of anything big. Feel good about Omeozulu and Gipson. It's going to be a very interesting finish to the summer. I'm interested to see if anything else pops up above the norm, like one of the OLs becoming a priority. Seems unlikely, but not crazy. If Texas lands Lindsey, some priorities got shifted.

Texas would not rank Hudson as a priority above a normal recruitment at this point in time, barring whiffing on Wingo and Hudson suddenly getting religion late in the cycle.

IMO that showed confidence in the other prospects that we currently have committed as well as the ones CTJ listed. Especially with Oklahoma using a good chunk of their budget for Jayden Jackson....

The key is that no one has endless spigots. I am getting the impression that not even Oregon does. Same for Arkansas. If they did, even with limitations associated to both schools whether conference, location, or tradition, they'd be a bigger player for more recruits.

Texas is in as good a position as any program in the country in most sports and football is one of those. Things are coming together better and faster than non-imbeciles could envision, but there's still a long way to go, particularly from the overall roster sustainability perspective.

Part of this work involves discipline and helping create a rational marketplace. Texas could have landed Blocton, but there were multiple reasons they did not, including letting Auburn panic and behave like idiots. That makes landing Lindsey harder for Auburn, even though they're behaving like idiots on that one too. Miami has put a better near term pitch together, which, apparently, is a problem for Auburn now.

Texas did not have Blocton ahead of any other DT/NT prospect on their board at the time of his commitment. January has a lower floor, but he's believed to have a solid work ethic, he loves football, and retention will not be a problem. He knows he's going to have to put work in and develop ahead of significant playing time.

I have seen him do this several times. I believe he called a couple timeouts on the last drive vs Bama a couple years ago to bring the margin to 20 pts or something.

Seems like another data point that McKinley may be Alfred Collins 2.0.

I mentioned that awhile ago. Gerry kept hinting about McKinley. He has said he is like Collins in more way, than just talent. He explicitly mentioned motor or drive, but that was the 1st thing that came to mind. 5 star talent with a questionable desire to maximize it.

This has been a trend for several of the top DT's the past few cycles it seems. Immensely physically gifted, but drive may not be there. Was the same thing for that DT that signed with A&M last cycle whos dad was driving the recruitment. Hicks I think?
