I get the weight of heads vs tails making a 50.5 to 49.5 difference. But if SMU is a player, then I don't get how you can flip a coin to get an answer.

If the money comes in they think will come in it could delay the decision timeline. Some Texas rangers money involved

Texas 2024 Crystal Ball Predictions for two five-stars: Like it, Love it, Leave it

Jordan Scruggs

Just over four months away from the early college football signing period, I take a look at my current 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions and classify them as to how I see them trending— Like it, Love it, or Leave it.

Like it = I’m happy with my pick where it’s at.

Love it = I love my pick and am not considering changing it at the moment.

Leave it = I don’t like my pick and I’m considering changing it soon.

Colin Simmons, EDGE, Duncanville

Love it

On the second night of Simmons' Texas official visit I entered in a prediction in favor of the Longhorns after speaking with several sources close to the five-star. Over a month and a half later, I’m still feeling confident about my prediction that Texas will land the nation’s No. 1 EDGE prospect.

Throughout the last few days I’ve had quiet confidence for the Longhorns chances, but after speaking with several Dallas area sources today I am now more confident in my expectation that Simmons will announce a commitment to Texas come Thursday at 2:00 PM when the five-star announces where he’ll play at the next level.

Each source I spoke with today relayed very similar information regarding the factors that are going in Texas’ way compared to LSU, with the common themes being proximity to home, life after football opportunities, early playing time opportunities, and the relationships that Simmons has with the people in the Longhorns program whether coaches or players.

Like a majority of the high profile recruitments that take place in the present day and age of college football recruiting, NIL is also a factor to the puzzle with Simmons recruitment. Over the last few cycles the Longhorns have shown they aren’t afraid to get involved in recruitments that heavily factor NIL, and my belief is that if NIL becomes a bigger factor in this recruitment, I would still feel just as confident as I do now.

Kobe Black, CB, Waco Connally

Like it

I entered in my prediction in favor of the Longhorns for Black the same day I entered my pick in for Simmons, and even though I’m saying I like my pick rather than love my pick, that’s largely in part due to a cloudy timeline for the five-star’s recruitment to be over.

When it’s time for Black’s recruitment to start really coming down the home stretch I think there could very well be some twists and turns, but ultimately my belief is that Black will end up selecting a Texas hat when his commitment ceremony rolls around.

While the two recruitments of Black and Simmons haven’t necessarily been alike, they do share similarities in that both prospects have deep ties to the Longhorns program, and in Black’s situation that happens to be his former Waco Connally teammates Jelani McDonald and Tre Wisner who arrived in Austin in June.

Like Simmons, I think everything Texas has to offer for Black whether it be proximity to home or the relationships he has with people throughout the program will simply be too many factors for other schools involved in the recruitment to overcome.

Some Ryan Wingo info

Hank South

Traded messages with 5-star WR Ryan Wingo (he's a busy guy right now with fall camp) and got some info to pass along:

-- He *does* plan to attend a game in Austin this fall but says he doesn't know which one just yet. Steve Wiltfong reported that it could be the Wyoming game. That's probably safe to circle as the tentative date right now.

-- I asked him about the relationship he's building with WR coach Chris Jackson ...

"Having the chance to play for Coach Jackson is basically like practicing like a pro because he’s been in the league for so long. He’s got that experience with all top WRs."

-- He reaffirmed plans to announce a commitment on Dec. 20, so there's still a ways to go.

-- There was a Mizzou Crystal Ball placed by 247's Allen Trieu this week. Wingo did not name any favorites or say any one team is standing out. Of note, Wiltfong is still on Texas with his Crystal Ball. He noted in a recent story we posted on Horns247 that it's going to be a battle with Mizzou to the end.

-- Texas looks like it's still doing what it needs to do in this recruitment and getting him back on campus will be big this fall.

  • While we were confident last week in Texas winning out, it's safe to say that our confidence in the Longhorns is trending up as we get closer to decision day.

The Huddle: More on five-star EDGE Colin Simmons

Hudson Standish (Horns 247)

Texas is in the middle of one of the fiercest head-to-head battles of the 2024 recruiting cycle with LSU regarding Duncanville (TX) five-star edge rusher Colin Simmons. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder is set to announce his commitment on Thursday, Aug. 10 via the 247Sports YouTube channel.

Last week when Simmons announced his intent to commit on the 10th I wrote an article explaining our confidence for Texas to win out while also detailing why sources and analysts on the LSU side were confident in the Tigers. In the article, I mentioned a few different times that we were talking with Texas, LSU, DFW, and more sources to get a full picture of the decision in a similar manner to how we approached the last major head-to-head in Corian Gipson. While we were confident last week in Texas winning out, it's safe to say that our confidence in the Longhorns is trending up as we get closer to decision day.

Jordan wrote an excellent article detailing what he was hearing earlier today and the sources I've spoken to feel similarly to his overall read of the recruitment. Texas has a number of factors working in their favor and has done extremely well over the last week to fight back against the real momentum that the LSU staff gained following Simmons' visit to the Bayou Splash recruiting event. While we're increasingly confident, and have maintained that Texas was our pick throughout, it should be noted that this is a volatile recruitment and we've experienced plenty of swings over the last week or so that will be saved for the post-NSD edition of The Stampede. If there isn't a wild swing over the next 48 hours we feel good that the No. 1 priority for the Longhorns in the 2024 cycle will select the burnt orange.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder is ranked the No. 8 overall prospect in the country per the 247Sports composite coming off a season where he totaled 79 tackles, including 33 tackles for a loss, and 22 sacks.

Here’s Simmons’ 247Sports evaluation, via Gabe Brooks:

Athletic edge defender with a speed-based game. Adequate height and above average length with a relatively lighter build, but nuclear playmaking ability.

Most dangerous from a two-point stance. Flashes initial athleticism that prevents some tackles from even touching him. Displays excellent dip-and-bend flexibility and screams around the arc to get home regularly.

Highly productive with almost two dozen sacks as a junior. Elite pursuit speed couples with impressive redirecting suddenness to allow for chase-down plays. Often makes the most of hand quickness and length with encouraging disengaging ability vs. much larger opponents.

Capable of winning with secondary rush. Targets the ball and goes for the strip. Gets his hands up when he's not getting home and knocks down a high volume of throws.

Athleticism and playmaking drive occasionally run him out of plays. Will need some mass and additional strength to stand up to the run game vs. high-major opponents. Will encounter tackles who can hold their own outside, so continued sharpening of promising hand violence and secondary rush are keys.

One of the top pass rushers in the country across multiple classes entering his senior season. Projects as a potential multi-year impact player at the Power Five level with a long-term ceiling that could lead to early-round NFL Draft consideration.

There’s too much positivity flowing in here and it’s too soon.

Someone go find satya.

SIAP, but what is John Jancek's previous coaching resume that someone thinks he's a better developer than PK?  His track record/draft picks at UW speak for itself, not to mention the noticeable devolopment/improvement of the defense last year.

He appears to be a journeyman coach who has a few stops in the SEC.  Nothing screams recruiting wizard or developer extraordinaire.  He's not young or hip.  If he's been a building block of a great team I missed it.

No one wrote that, it was a stupid fucking poster on a livestreem that asked the question and said diversity, and now we've delved down this fucking rabbit hole based on something someone heard about Ferris Buellar at 31 fucking flavors last night. This was the original quote that got this started, I know becuase I went back 5 pages and did a control F for fucking Diversity.

So now we've gone from talking about diversity, and if it's an issue, to blaming some phantom 995er for writing and legitimizing it, when it was a stupid fucking knob on a livestream the likely equivalent of Spider2yBanana and now the rest of us are dealing with this pile of horseshit. I've seen 5 year olds fuck up a game of telephone less than this shit, and there's a goddamn digital fucking record here.

For this board, you’re going to need to be more specific…

Pete K is our edge coach. Do we need a dedicated EDGE coach? Someone to pair with Bo Davis on the recruiting trail? Would we have to give up another coach to do that? If so, who would be the best to give up in order to bring in Demarcus ware or something??

This may not be a new issue as it could have been happening with bag money for years, but I’d be interested to know what the thinking at various schools is on what to do with resources committed to a recruit become available because that recruit chooses another school.

Especially with a summer verbal.

do you hold on and keep fighting for a while longer?  How long?  Do you pivot and try to get in on or close another recruitment or multiple recruitments if the resources can be split?  Are the resources guaranteed or were they contingent on that particular recruit?

pretty high stakes strategy game.

Can Simmons enroll early and be ready for Alabama game???

Ketch's source is Roach, whose source is Justin Vogel, whose source is Justin Wells, whose source is Gerry Hamilton, whose source is Hudson Standish, whose source is Ketchum.

I was thinking earlier today that the odds of CS's 3 choices were analogous to a roulette wheel. On the roulette wheel Texas could be black, LSU could be red, but Miami would definitely be the green double zero. It rarely lands on that green space, but that is how the house gets their advantage and it always hits at the worst time.
