Was looking at LSU's class and noticed this talk a little on Tigerdroppings.  They have a very Herman-like class currently.  Highly rated, but going off the On3 composite, of the top 17 commits they have, just 1 is OL/DL.  Woof.

Can't they just put a 3* TE at offensive tackle? /nomackbrown

Yes, but, using that metaphor, any individual could choose to block the scat porn that he didn't like. If one were so inclined, that is.

On OL recruiting:

- Our 2022 class was clearly elite.  Cristobal leaving was a major catalyst for Banks and Williams flipping, but we took advantage and ended up with a great combination of quality and numbers.

- Since then, we have taken 7 recruits;  5 in 2023, and 2 in 2024.

- Of those 7,

- 5 out of 7 are ranked outside the top 400 in the country

- the other two are #193 and #240 (Chatman and Cruz)

- Goosby and Cruz in particular are held in high regard; they're considered under ranked.  That may well be true, but I wouldn't apply those labels (under ranked, diamonds in the rough) to the entire position group

- also, when I looked at the list of offers we have out to OL in this class,

- we only have 19 total offers out;  12 to OTs, and 7 to IOL

- of those 19, 17 are committed to other schools

- the only recruits - 2 - who are still uncommitted?  Baker and Carter

- so, yeah, the stakes are even higher than they would be, with two highly ranked prospects.  But land these guys = especially Baker - and lordy lordy ....

Four-star Texas RB commit Jerrick Gibson recaps dominate Friday night performance, visit plans for the fall

Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247)

In a game between IMG Academy and Lipscomb Academy that featured 20 prospects ranked inside the Top247, no player made bigger plays than four-star Texas running back commit Jerrick Gibson.

Gibson rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns against a Lipscomb team ranked No. 19 in the nation by Maxpreps, but he still felt like there was more he could do when asked what he’d grade his performance.

“I’d give myself probably like a B, I left some out there and it wasn’t perfect and I can definitely get better next time but now it’s just onto week two and we’re also trying to beat them to sleep too.”

The nation’s No. 2 RB per 247Sports then went in-depth on his relationship with Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice.

“Coach Choice and I are locked in man that’s my dog. We talk almost everyday and he stays in touch with me,” Gibson continued. “We actually talked before the game and he told me to keep my head on right and just play my game and come out here and work and that’s what I did.”

Gibson remains in “almost everyday” communication with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian as well.

“Coach Sark is a pretty cool dude, he’s a great guy, we just chop it up about life. He hits me up almost everyday and we’re just always chopping it up.”

Currently the second highest ranked member of the Longhorns 2024 recruiting class, Gibson has high expectations for his future teammates in his position group.

“I just want to see my running backs eat, I just want to see them perform. I already know what they got, I’ve already been there and I know how their heads are and how locked in they always are so I’m pretty sure they're going to do pretty good this year so I just want to see them execute.”

While Gibson wouldn’t commit to Texas until his official visit, he told Horns247 he knew exactly where he was going months before letting the world know.

“I knew it was going to be Texas before my official visit because I was going on all these other visits and it just didn't feel right, I was really there just to have fun but once I went to Texas I already knew that this is the place I need to be at to be developed to go first round in the NFL draft.”

The four-star wasn’t exactly sure if he’s going to be able to make it to Austin for a game this fall, but said that he and his family are trying to figure out the logistics and get everything set on the calendar.

When asked which schools are pushing the hardest to flip him from the Burnt Orange, he was quick to mention a school that’s been around longer than a majority of programs involved in his recruitment.

“Florida for sure because that’s my hometown. I’m probably going to go to a game at Florida because I still have a passion for Florida from just growing up there and watching them so I’m going to get to a game at Florida for sure.”

At 5-foot-10, 200 pounds, Gibson is ranked as the No. 2 running back in the nation, the No. 83 overall prospect in the nation, and the No. 15 overall prospect in the state of Florida according to 247Sports.

Actually both ‘dominant’ and ‘dominate’ are correct. It goes back to the Latin dominor, a deponent verb. It has passive forms (like the pp dominatus) that have active meaning. And then we have the expected active participial forms that give us the more customary -ant ending.

Maybe I’m wooshing here, but wasn’t the problem that they used “dominate” which is a verb, when they meant “dominant” which is an adjective? I don’t think anyone questioned whether “dominate” was a word.

It is less commonly seen in formal writing, but it is a synonym when used as an adjective. Some people disapprove of using either predominate or dominate as adjectives, but etymologically, they were verbal adjectives before they were verbs.

Are you saying that the use of the word "dominate" (instead of "dominant"), in the sentence below, is grammatically correct??

We know dominate and dominant are both words you pedantic motherfucker. Mother coming from the Latin “mater” and fucker coming from “how are you so fucking stupid” that you don’t recognize the disconnect in the sentence is that dominate is a verb and dominant is the adjective he meant to use.

He doesn't mean 'to dominate'

Being a dominate force and a dominant force are both acceptable to say.  That's his point.  Let's move on already

As long as we get Baker I see no reason to despair.  Flood & Co. seem excellent at evaluating pop-up seniors.  I wonder if they will be looking for  TE and LB in the same fashion.

Elite LB target Jordan Ross details where Texas stands in recruitment
Horns247 caught up with 247Sports five-star linebacker target Jordan Ross about the latest he's hearing from the Longhorns and when he could make a decision.
Hank South

It’s been quiet on the Jordan Ross front since the 247Sports five-star edge rusher officially visited Texas back in the summer. The Birmingham (Ala.) Vestavia Hills product keeps up with the Longhorns staff fairly frequently, though.

“I’ve heard a lot,” Ross told Horns247 of the latest with the Longhorns. “When I went down for my OV I absolutely loved Texas. I had a great time down there.”

It’s no surprise that a Yellowhammer State native served as Ross’ host during his time in Austin.

“I’d say like talking to one of the football players from Texas, who was originally from Birmingham, Alabama — Justice Finkley,” Ross said of OV highlights. “He tells me how it’s a great program, how they can develop me, and how Austin is just a great city in general.”

Ross wants to get back to the Forty Acres this fall.

“I haven’t really looked at anyone’s games,” he said. “I plan to go down there and watch a game. That’s kind of on my agenda. I haven’t figured out which one I want to go to.”

Ross says the main coach he’s been in contact with of late from Texas is the head man Steve Sarkisian.

“They’re like we have a great program,” Ross said of the staff’s pitch. “Like Justice said. We can develop you and we would love for you to be here. There’s a lot of opportunities here for you to be great.”

Ross recently hinted at making a decision soon on Twitter. He shared the latest on when that might come.

“I’m still thinking about it,” he said. “But I’m pretty sure what I want. I haven’t set a day or anything, but I’m pretty sure I’ve got it down. It’s still a little secret.”

Ross’ last move was a top eight that included the Longhorns, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Oregon, Tennessee, and USC.

Ross says he’ll likely trim down his list one more time before committing.

“I can’t really say too much but I can say Texas is really in there,” he said. “Texas is like top three right now.”

Why could the elite edge see himself in Burnt Orange?

“I’d say seeing how Justice played out and seeing how he got on the field so early,” Ross said. “I saw some of his highlights. I’m not really seeing that position there as full. I think they have a low depth chart. There aren’t too many players at that position.”

At 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, Ross is ranked the No. 4 edge rusher and the No. 36 overall prospect in the country, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. 247Sports rates Ross the No. 2 edge rusher and No. 12 overall player in America.

Eh, I'm certainly not despairing, but I don't like the way the coaches have handled this cycle at OL.  I'm glad that we recognized the in-state crop of OL talent was down and we decided to look out of state for guys that meet our standard.  Nyier Daniels, Daniel Calhoun, Brandon Baker, Deandre Carter, etc.  But even in a down year for in-state talent, Texas recruits will always be the lifeblood of the program.  Texas recruits will also feel a gravitational pull to UT that OOS guys don't.  OOS guys should always be seen as potential cherries on top, not Plan A to be relied on.  Michael Uini, Blake Ivey, and Ory Williams all seemed like gettable guys.  But (I have no inside information, just my impression from publicly available information so I could be way off base) it seems like the coaches invested more into chasing the OOS guys and other schools prioritized the Texas OL talent.  And now here we are, hoping that a California kid with stronger ties to Oregon than Texas decides to commit here to keep the OL class from looking like a Tom Herman OL class.

But it's a long way to signing day and Sark's staff have consistently shown an ability to close strong.  I'm not stressing it, we'll see how it plays out.

It was always going to be a challenge signing a big OL class after one of the best OL hauls ever a few years ago and so much depth. Going after OOS big fish who aren't afraid of competition isn't bad strategy.
