Texas Recruiting Notes 2024: Bags Don't Beat Bankrolls

If you want to see some funny shit, go look at Ohio State for the last 5 classes. Check out their OL takes versus what they do at WR, DB and DL. When they meet up with good DLs, get run over and then wonder what the fuck happened, it's rarely mentioned that they're recruiting OL like they're Miami of Ohio and not Ohio State. I expect it to happen this year against Michigan and PSU, at the least. But, hey, another top 5 class for Ohio State!

Hartline doing all the heavy lifting they should have told him to take the Cincinnati HC job and come back in 2 years

I honestly don't understand why final class rankings don't weigh the overall balance of a class, and also minimize the weight of stacking certain position groups with 5-star players. Three 5-star receivers isn't as good as one 5-star WR, a 5-star OL, and a 5-star DL. And that kind of fuckery is why we had a reputation of doing so little with so much. All of the "so much" was loaded into DBs and WRs and no OL, DEs, or LBs.

Hartline is absolutely acting in his best interests. There are zero reasons to believe he'd be even an average HC and learning on the job for a couple years at a G5 with recent success isn't the surest way to get invited back to your blue blood alma mater. He'll take the Fickell route and snag the interim when plastic santa gets the boot and hope to catch lightning in a bottle. If it goes poorly, theeeeeeeen go g5 and learn how to do the thing

Same reason the 9.95ers give the same number of WR 5 stars as OL 5 stars. Actually it is a different reason. The 9.95ers can go watch 7v7 and get a good feel for the WRs and DBs and QBs. They aren't nearly as good at evaluating OL. Anyway for the 9.95ers to be accurate they need to create a balanced class as far as rankings - like 5OL, 3WR, 1RB, 1QB, 1TE, 1athlete and do the same for D to create your balanced top 22. Keep doing that until the 9.95ers work all the way down to 1 stars. And that would probably lead to better predictions of class talent. It wouldn't completely fix the problem of some schools neglecting OL, but that could be addressed by looking at the entire 85 man roster.

Could they take offer lists into consideration for OL / DL prospects? Seems they should. Maybe knowing a real offer from uncommittable offer is too hard.

Cause the only people who give a shit about stars and rankings are in this thread. Theres no need to change anything they are making free money do baby journalism its not like anyone holds them accountable for poor ranking system, they don't lose their job cause the misidentify talent.

I agree with you on all of this.

I also don't believe punters or kickers should count towards a team's average class score.

The complication here for me is assessing down classes versus up  classes at positions, as well as the component of understanding a school's existing roster. We'd be asking the 995ers to not only know the class, but also each team's roster to match up needs. Otherwise you're penalzing a school for going OL heavy in one class when the talent is elite, but dinging them for only taking 2 in a year where the talent is iffy in state. Plus mathcing it up with what exists on each team's roster and needs.

Now envision that this kind of analysis is coming from EJ Holland. No thanks. I'm ok with using the data we have and just plugging it into our own class needs based on our knowledge of the teams we follow.

Good point. I wouldn't trust the average 995er to know how to wipe their own asshole.

Next, the NCAA is going to look into school's letting prospective student athletes listen to music while on campus.  If they bring their own music, that would probably be ok, but the school should not sped resources providing it.

Spoiler

The NCAA’s Division I Council voted Wednesday to eliminate the annual limits on initial counters, the number of new scholarship players a program can add each offseason. The move allows FBS and FCS football programs to replace as many scholarships as they lose up to their overall roster limits (85 for FBS schools, 63 for FCS schools).

Here’s what you need to know:

Initial counter limits have been suspended since 2021, after COVID-19 eligibility complications and the one-time transfer exception fostered a dramatic increase in player movement and programs struggled to find enough roster spots to accommodate those newcomers under the old rules.
The previous FBS limit on initial counters was 25 per year; in the FCS, the limit was 30 per year.
The move was in conjuncture with the Council’s vote to shorten transfer windows from a total of 60 days to 45 days for all sports.
Why is this limit being removed?
The simplest explanation is that the toothpaste can’t go back into the tube. The initial counter limits were waived for 2022-23 and ’23-24 as a response to increasing attrition rates due to the popularity of the transfer portal as well as the extra year of eligibility for 2020. It was the right call at the time, giving coaches more freedom to replace what they lost and maintain an 85-man scholarship roster. It’s not good for anyone when programs don’t have 85 players because they ran out of scholarships to add more, but it was the portal that made leaders start to take that issue seriously.

Now there’s simply no clean way to go back to 25-man signing limits. The result of this change was predictable: Coaches can once again oversign with their recruiting and portal classes and run off their underperforming players to get back to 85. Colorado’s Deion Sanders wouldn’t have been able to bring in 68 new scholarship players for Year 1 if those signing limits were in place. Increased freedom in roster management has been essential for new coaching staffs and rebuilding programs. Once that limit was waived, it was obvious there would be no easy way to go back to the old way of doing things. — Max Olson, senior college football writer

So Texas could just buy every four and five star player, let them practice, see which ones are truly the best, then let the ones portal out who don't make the cut?

Sure, if there weren't a bunch of other schools with their own NIL machines trying to do the same thing

There are still scholarship limits. but you can manage your 85 however you want now. Take 50 players one year and 12 the next. Who gives a shit.

5 stars who do hit immediately don’t tend to transfer from destination type schools.

I can almost guarantee that’s what it was. This is not something the NCAA would even think to be aware of unless coaches were bitching about it.

This sounds to me like the coaches were sick of having more and more elaborate photo shoots and having to deal with all of that shit, so they've agreed to just put an end to it.
