Driving home after about a week visiting friends outside of Denver.  Left at 5 this AM to head home. About 30 mins into the trip the power train warning light came on.  Now sitting in a parking lot waiting for Ford Service to open up.  Probably not going to be sleeping in my bed tonight.

Maybe not trivial but I'm definitely Surly.

Welp cars not gonna be fixed until Wed at the earliest.  Can't get a rental until 4pm at the earliest.  Just booked a flight from Denver to ATX. This fucking sucks.  We drove to save money on flight.  Now we will fly home and back next week

It’s it the check engine light?

If I recall on my old VW, a solid light means it’s an emissions issue and can still be driven. A flashing check engine light means you’re screwed.

It was the turbo.  They said that it affects the ability of the car to pick up speed and keep speed.  What I was told was that the turbo is like a fan and it got out of balance and threw other things off. The oil started leaking and the car started to smoke.

We were lucky that it happened when it did because there was a dealership close by.  There's not much between Colorado Springs and Amarillo.

We are waiting at the airport.  Could've been worse.  We were lucky.  Kids are troopers.

Turbos don't magically "go out of balance." Something failed hard.

The topic of people tossing bags of dog shit in random trash cans has been mentioned many times. Someone actually walked up to my trash can that was by my garage to deposit their baggie of dog shit. Haven't seen that one before.

God fucking dammit. Came back from vacation and my trash can had been out for probably four days before my neighbor brought it in for me (thanks neighbor), but in that time it collected at least FIFTEEN bags of dog shit. Fuck. You. People.

I’m now going to be that guy that puts a sign on my trash can. And maybe a booby trap.

Here’s a good one for Spanish-speakers (my first language), particularly for Mexican Spanish speakers (accent):

My college roommate and I died when we heard this. Still to this day I’ll randomly text him AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Hope to hell you got an estimate. In my experience anytime the turbo is mentioned...They're going in dry...and deep.

You could stop in Trinidad and get a sex change surgery while you are waiting on the car repair.  Two birds.  One stone.

This week not only did I get the joy of shelling out 45k for foundation repair, but as I settled into bed I heard a commotion out in the entryway of the house. My son and his wife are here for the weekend and their dog Cowboy was freaking out. Turned out Cowboy was the hero of the story, as he cornered a 4’ rat snake. It was dark and I didn’t ID him until after I dispatched him.
I’m sure he came in one of the 200+ times people went in and out with the foundation repairs, and all the dirt around the foundation and under our back deck being disturbed.
Mrs. NNM may not sleep for the next year. Hell, I may not either. Having a 4’ snek in the house is not fun.

Super-  had a similar issue at our house and we solved it by making sure they rotate shoes (our issue was mainly with cleats and volley ball shoes) and using one of these after each use. It has an ozone maker and seems to work well for us.  About a year into it..

it will not help much on shoes that already stink, have to start with new cleats/shoes

My son’s smelly feet can clear a room. Maybe it’s because he’s really active and feet sweat a LOT, or there’s something else going on. It’s gotten to the point we’re embarrassed to have him go to friends’ houses.

We’ve tried disinfectants, arm and hammer “balls” filled with baking soda, washing each foot at lest 30 seconds each day, washing his shoes frequently, and trying out different types of socks…

I think we’ve achieved a stalemate with a combo of rotating 3-4 different pairs of shoes, antibacterial soap, new socks and washing his shoes using hydrogen peroxide.

Not sure how sustainable after he becomes responsible for it all. But damn, I’d rather smell poop than his shoes.

Maybe relevant or not, but after I lived in New Orleans a couple of years (100% humidity all the time) I started having a horrible time with foot odor. Showered twice a day, changed socks twice a day, scrubbed my feet, every foot powder known to man, threw out my old shoes, bought new ones. Nothing helped. Ten minutes out of the shower and drying my feet, they stunk again, even if I hadn't put on shoes. Buddy of mine, who was in the Viet Nam war, told me same thing happened over there. They used to piss on their feet in the shower to get rid of it, but you could just pour vinegar on your feet and dry them. Worked. Turns out it was a yeast infection from the humidity. No problems with foot odor since then.

I'm guessing they were driving them there and sat in the lobby? Or did they actually bring them in the actual interview?

Comes from this report here:

NEARLY 4 IN 10 EMPLOYERS AVOID HIRING RECENT COLLEGE GRADS IN FAVOR OF OLDER WORKERS

Survey happened December of last year but for whatever reason seems to be making the rounds now.

From the report, it seems as though the 19 percent figure is people who have had a parent or parents actually in the interview, not just drop the candidate off or wait in the lobby.

Quote

Regardless of whether interviews are online or in-person, recent college graduates still seem to struggle with professional behavior. Twenty-one percent of employers have had a candidate refuse to turn on their camera for a virtual interview, while 19% say they’ve even had a recent college graduate bring a parent with them to their interview.

Like most anything, one can draw whatever conclusions he or she wants from this kind of survey.  I suspect that one could survey a completely different set of hiring managers and come up with a different set of statistics.  It does not say where the people surveyed come from in terms of specific industry, just that the respondents were 25+ years of age, have annual household income above $75k, work for companies with 10 or more employees, and are a C-Level executives, HR manager, director, president, owner/partner, president, or senior to middle management.

Tried this today but it didn’t work.

To clarify - are you supposed to take your shoes off?

Took my phone to get the screen replaced this afternoon. Guy told me he was backed up, and to come back in 2-3 hours.*

When I went to pick it up to pay, he said the machine will "ask you a question". The question was - do you want to tip 15%, 18%, 20% or skip? I already paid $190 for this service and it's asking for more? Grrr.

* During the time I was waiting, I went to a nearby Walmart for the first time in... several years. It's still the typical depressing Walmart experience I remembered.

I find the Walmart experience uplifting.  It just reminds me that no matter how shitty I think my life is, it could always be worse

On Microsoft's official technical forum/community, answers.microsoft.com, 99% of the answers are utterly useless.  The top/pinned post is always by some Microsoft "MVP" (still unsure if these are employees or just token carrots for volunteers), which always completely ignore the question. Just rubbish.

Koala posts back over that way...

Went to Mexico last week and started to feel a little sick starting Saturday morning. At first it was just a cough and now I feel like dogshit. I have body aches, fever, chills, stuffy nose, weakness, the whole enchilada. I haven’t taken a Covid test yet since I just got it in March. Sucks that I have a project due end of the month, and while I have 2 strong guys working on it, I feel the need to look over their work. This sucks.

 You've misspelled "humongously" humongously.

Needed to change an upcoming car rental over to wife's name as I can't make the trip....

Avis: Sure no problem

Avis: Oh, that reservation has been prepaid so I can't change the name (had I not already paid she could have)

Avis: I can though just cancel this one and create one in your wife's name

Me: Fine, will there be price changes, etc?

Avis: Possibly, will be based on current prices... (I booked in January...so lol...)

Me: Fine, let me know the difference.

Avis:  I can't

Me: Why not

Avis: You have to select what kind of vehicle you want.. we have...

Me: I want the same thing... everything the same... just in my wife's name

Avis: We don't have that vehicle available for those dates

Me: But I have one reservered now and you about to cancel it

Avis:  Yes sir but I can't reserve it if it's not available and once I cancel it, it still won't be available

I'll save you the rest of the story... but after another 5-10 minues I still could not get her to understand why I was so frustrated. I don't think she ever understood how stupid the situation she was presenting was.  I ended up cancelling and reserving with another company...

People who reply with "oh you sweet summer child" to someone being positive, optimistic, naive, whatever.

Conversation before we went on a trip:

Me: What are you going to do while we're at the beach?
Her: I brought a book on parenting.
Me: You sure you don't want to bringing lighter to read?
Her: No, I'm going to read it. (She's been saying this for at least 3 vacations)

Sitting on the beach, she stares out onto the ocean, book is nowhere to be found.

Me: Where's your book?
Her: I don't want to read it. It's dry.
Me: Want to read the books on my iPad? They're by David Sedaris.
Her: No   (as she continues to stare onto the ocean for 3 days)

Well bless your heart.

Flight delays (weather) suck.

We have been suffering multiple flight changes & cancelations, all due to the rain in South Florida.

Now on a direct AUS ➡️ FLL, leaves here @ 1733, arrive FLL @ 2126.

*bag (supposedly) already removed from the AUS ➡️ HOU ✈️.

All of these items the computer have already installed multiple times in the previous days.

By the way, its so cool we have components from Intel, INTEL, Intel Corporation, and Intel(R) Corporation. Maybe Apple's walled garden doesn't look so bad.

Man, dealing with Apple in a corporate environment is much worse these days.  Trying to automate Apple updates is a complete nightmare for admins and end users alike.  Windows updates push out smaller, granular packages, while Apple pushes periodic giant turds that take 30+ minutes to update and if you don't have the local admin creds, you're screwed.
