Especially because, let’s face it— the cream of the transfer crop is not going there. It’s kicking problems down the road. I’d be having a hard talk with Spav if I were that AD. Fair take... it’s a strategy and maybe he thinks it was the best tasting shit sandwich this year. It’s not like he’s a bad recruiter though and if Peeler is still there, that guy can pull dudes but San Marcos isn’t exactly compelling for most recruits
February 13, 20214 yr My gut says it's a bad strategy. However, there was an article posted earlier that illustrated that there were waaaay more players in the portal than available scholarships. So, for this cycle, Spav might be able to pull in better talent than he could normally acquire.
February 13, 20214 yr I don’t see how it’s not a great strategy. He can’t get that level of HS player. Now he is getting guys that have 3-4 years and were 3 star recruits. I actually think it’s a pretty solid strategy for a Sun Belt school. Its really similar to what the Wizard used to do at KState with Juco recruits. He signed 7 3 stars.

For the most part, you transfer when you aren’t playing. Most schools have plenty of players on the roster already not playing, why bring on another kid who couldn’t start at his prior team and who has shown that he won’t stick with it through adversity. Now an intelligent way to use the portal would be if you were at some huge football factory, got the lay of the land, and figured out that the NFL was not in your future. Then transfer to a place like Rice or Vandy and did the bare minimum to keep the scholarship and graduate with that degree. That would be a brilliant move. I am glad this exists for fairness sake, but the novelty is going to wear off soon.

These are young kids that have been the top or at least top 5 kid their whole life. A lot of these guys feel the next opportunity will be better for them. It’s the society we live in. Star players want to team up and demand trades. People don’t work at jobs for decades any more. Transfers have happened for a long time but now there is just a place to see them.
