The US Capitol has been Breached [Action and Developing stories]

Popping in to leave this here. What a day. A sad sad day. I caught Biden's speech and cried when his voice cracked. He knows those folks, has worked with them, and probably knew most of the staff and aides that were in danger. Stay safe every body. Have hope even on the ledge, which is where I've returned. The coup is still ongoing, so have faith that the guardrails will keep us from tumbling over the side...

the thing that has stuck out to me the most today his how little security our elected officials actually have. from Mitt being harassed in the airport to the insurrection on our Capitol, I would have expected secret police to be coming out of panels in the walls and from inside the ceiling and through the floors to stop these traitorous thugs from ever getting 50 feet from the front doors, much less into the chambers. hollywood definitely failed my perceptions, but we have seriously failed ourselves. we failed this test miserably. glad these people weren't more competent

As the violent mob incited by President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, some West Wing staffers panicked that they were possibly becoming participants in a coup to overthrow the government. “What do I do? Resign?” one nervous White House staffer asked a friend on Wednesday afternoon, shortly after news broke that a woman had been shot and killed inside the Capitol. The West Wing staffer told the friend that White House Counsel Pat Cipollone was urging White House officials not to speak to Trump or enable his coup attempt in any way, so they could reduce the chance they could be prosecuted for treason under the Sedition Act. “They’re being told to stay away from Trump,” the friend said. The White House declined to comment.

Quote

Cipollone’s purported concern that Trump was committing treason––a federal crime––illustrates the chaos and fear of Wednesday’s unprecedented events. At least one staffer isn’t waiting to flee the ship. On Wednesday night, CNN reportedthat Stephanie Grisham, the former White House communications director and Melania Trump’s current chief of staff, resigned over the Trump-inspired riot. As staff quit or steer clear, Trump is increasingly isolated and alone. According to a Republican close to the White House, Trump refused to take calls on Wednesday from business leaders who wanted him to call off the insurrectionists. A former West Wing staffer said Republicans were texting and calling Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to lobby him to intervene, but Meadows wasn’t answering.

Quote

In recent days, as Trump’s bid to overturn the election became increasingly desperate, he expressed anarchist comments in private, a second Republican close to the White House told me. The Republican said Trump told people that he wanted David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler to lose the Georgia Senate runoff election as a way of punishing them and Mitch McConnell. “Trump told people he is really angry that the senators and McConnell hadn’t stood up for him to challenge the election. He’s happy they lost.” According to the Republican, Trump has said he’ll be the most dominant force in Republican politics if there’s no party leadership.

Spoiler

Other Republicans I spoke to on Wednesday echoed the view that Trump wants to blow things up on his way out the door. “He’ll want to burn the whole thing down,” a Republican strategist said. “Trump doesn’t give a shit about anyone but himself.”

Tonight, there was a sense that the ground had shifted. Even Stephen Miller told one Republican that it was a terrible day. Twitter finally suspended Trump’s account—at least for 12 hours. And the immediate question facing Republicans became whether the violent scene today merits them invoking the 25th Amendment and removing Trump from office. The provision in the Constitution requires the vice president to secure support from the majority of the Cabinet or Congress. According to a D.C. strategist close to the White House, some prominent Republicans are lobbying Mike Pence to greenlight the process. “Pence has to initiate it,” the strategist said. Republicans I spoke to were doubtful Pence would take the extraordinary step given his longtime fealty to Trump––even in the face of being humiliated. “Maybe if Trump calls for another protest, then it’s possible,” the former West Wing official said.

No matter what happens in the next 13 days, Trump has set himself up for perpetual warfare with a Republican Party that is, finally, willing to confront his destructive authoritarianism. “Everyone is blaming Trump for Georgia,” the Republican strategist said. “When Trump took office, we had the White House and both branches of Congress. Now we have nothing. He inherited a Lamborghini and treated it like a lawn mower.”

I worked for the Senate Sergeant at Arms during the 1987 session.  Sometimes on the floor during session, sometimes answering office phones, running bills around to different buildings (Enrolling and Engrossing holla!), sometimes even got to take the shitty Senate car - a Ford Escort with the stenciled "Texas Senate" on the door - to run other official errands, and sometimes running the elevator to the floor.  Good times.

Those were good times, weren't they? Never had more fun at any job in my entire life. My other gig when they weren't in session was to take a box of Texas flags to the top of the rotunda and go outside to run them up and back down the flag pole just so reps could give them away to constituents and tell them the flag "flew over the capitol."

Enough with the history lessons.  When do we get to the part where they expel Rafael and Hawley?

Does anyone know if Trump's cabinet is considering the 25th? I haven't read anything about it in the last few posts and I'm getting concerned with the lack of updates

They're trying to figure out how to do it, and avoid getting sent up river themselves.

But have you heard about the capitol's defense since Tuberville joined?

If Saban would run for Tubby's seat next time, I'd go down to Tuscaloosa and kneel in adoration at his oddly malformed clapping statue.

Not sure but many people are thinking of resigning from the administration because they have finally had enough after 4 years.

Not going to happen. The disgruntled ones will just resign and everyone else will just ride out the last 14 days.

Indeed.  Parties, booze, and pussy reigned.  Nearly shit myself when I'm running the elevator one day and Jim Wright (during his term as Speaker) gets on and says "can you take me to so and so's office?"  I was like "sure".  Abandoned the elevator and walked him all the way to the Senator's office.  He was very nice, reached out his hand to shake.  There was no grease on it.

I don't think it's that; I think it's association with an attempted coup ran from the White House.

<csb>I remember around those years, when I was at UT, there was usually some door open into the capitol building in the middle of the night. The main doors would get locked at night, but some side door would be unlocked, so you could get in. There were no signs that the building was closed, so I figured as a public building I had some right to be there, so I could wander the fancy capitol halls at 2 am high on whatever had me up at 2 am.</csb>

My first roommate in college was high school classmates with a Congressional page.  Supposedly one of his first days on the job he's working the elevator when Fred "Gopher" Gandy got in.  The page came through in the clutch and let out a very enthusiastic "Promenade deck!!!".  Apparently the page was relieved of his duties that day.

Bro just turn your camera off, bingo bango

Watched more of that shooting vid. Seems like a secret service agent or cop shot her through the window of the door she was climbing up. Right to the neck, one shot one kill. Sucks that she died but she was being very stupid.

Thank god we arrested the journalists
