The annoying thing is that they know they can take a DT thread they don't like or that triggers them in some way, and with one or two comments get it moved to here.

I still think that the best way to resolve message board disputes is having the opposing parties meet up in person for a fight officiated by a mod. A board I used to post on would do this. There was this militant atheist and youth pastor that would always get into it in threads until they were told to throw down. Youth pastor ended up choking out the atheist. They quit bickering after that.

In the infancy of the old board, I had a couple of posters that I bickered with constantly. Eventually we end up meeting at a tailgate, had beers together, and our internet interactions went from bitter bickering 100% of the time to actual discussions 50% of the time and just shooting the shit in random threads the other 50%. Humanizing a screen name goes a long way.

I rarely post on here (other than the Food & Travel board) because if I offer any kind of opinion or statement about politics, I tend to get told to go fuck myself, stupid aggy, rascist, fascist, etc...

Hence, I lurk.  I have, though, noticed a huge leftward shift of many of the posters that seemed to be on the center right of the political scale.  It's been interesting.

Take my view as you will....YMMV

It’s not a huge leftward shift. It’s that the republicans have shifted so far to the right that Adolf Hitler in hell thinks they’ve gone too far and it makes center right people appear liberal in comparison.

Its annoying that people like you don’t see that.

I mean at least the nazis wanted to build roads. What do the republicans want to do? Better check out their platform to see.

Say what you will about the tenets of national socialism dude. At least it’s an ethos.

I was one of the center right. Still am. A lot of people have gone way, way right. That includes many of my own family. I had a serious heart to heart with them a couple of months ago where I basically told them, "you guys raised me. You guys made me the man I am today. Those same people who raised me would be ashamed if I acted the way that people you are championing are acting. I hope you take that to heart because I am not seeing the people who raised me in you today."

There has been a large divergence from conservative Republicanism. I didn't go anywhere.

Well, as one of the right-leaning people, it is also how fully devoid of actual policy is the GOP.  They never offer alternatives, they just oppose.

Further, so much of what passes for policy is just culture war, -ism, and sound bites.  And lies.  So many lies.

The Republican/right offers no policy issues.  Just opposition to whatever the Democrats put up.

So, the debate and discussion has to center on the policy positions put forward by the left, because the right offers no alternative except to do nothing.

And much of the time, their justification for doing nothing is based on lies and distortion.

About the only valid justification for any of their opposition is that it costs money and might raise taxes.

That hasn't worked for me as a conservative for a long time, because I have thought most of the tax cuts to be foolish and have not been opposed to raising taxes, especially if the tax hike comes as some sort of fiscal responsibility "package," haha.  The GOP has zero real credibility when it comes to fiscal responsibility.

One of the things that really tore it for me was Obamacare repeal -- without any form of replacement.

What is this "full blown socialism" you're speaking of?  Show your work.

I guess I missed the part where Bernie or AOC or Liz Warren or some "full blown socialist" proposed government ownership of the means of production.

Really, you underscore why thinking conservatves have dumped what passes for conservatism in this country these days by invoking "socialism."  Come on, man, that's just stupid.

I never left the part, it left me.  I'm still fairly close to having the same beliefs (I did have a Libertarian phase) I did 20 years ago, mixed in with a change of opinion over a few things that some Republicans want to turn into hills to die on, but otherwise I'm not far off from where I was 20 years ago.

Well, one big change is I'm more than happy to acknowledge how many Republican policies aren't working with shit.  20 years ago, I was in my early 20s and still naive.  Now I see the same policies from when I was a kid still being touted, and still not working, and the politicians pushing those policies have done a good job of convincing far too many Republicans that someday these policies will work.

20 minutes ago, Ag with kids said:

I don't think you know what Republicans want either.

Hell, I don't even know if you could identify what makes a Republican a Republican these days.

I'm not bashing you by the way - right now, the GOP has officially decided to define itself by its loyalty to Trump, a guy who will join whatever party benefits him the most at the time, and who gives no shits about the GOP platform, no shits about having conservative values/morals.  A guy who will destroy the careers of actual lifelong Republicans who are far more conservative than he is, simply because he doesn't like what they said, or because they don't praise him enough.

What is a Republican these days?  Is it a Liz Cheney who for decades has been fairly hardline conservative, and has alienated her family because she doesn't think her sister should marry a woman? Apparently not, because she wasn't loyal enough to one man, and now the GOP wants her replaced.  Mitch McConnell who is the GOP personified, or William Barr, Trump's former AG and another Mr. GOP?  Nope, because former President Trump, and defacto head of the GOP is out there calling them both RINOs.

Right now the GOP has a bit of a purge going on, and it's not because they are arguing over the platform, it's about whether or not they are loyal to a single man, a former friend of the Clintons and who was a Democrat for years.

Edit: You have these Republicans who have been in office for decades, and all of the sudden there's a new crop of Republicans like Cawthorn, Boebert, MTG, Butthead Gaetz, who are coming in and they are deciding who is Republican and who isn't, and they are attacking plenty of old-school Republicans simply because those Republicans didn't buy into the cult of personality.  Hell, I kind of think Ted Cruz is the way he is, because he doesn't want an MTG/Boebert/Cawthorne crawling up his ass.

a) don’t be a coward.
ii) the cool thing is, I don’t have to guess. They literally published something that told us exactly what they think. It said, functionally, “whatever Trump wants.” Seriously, that was the stated party platform.
3) you want some? Ok - hollering about immigrants as the cause of literally all of our problems. Drugs? The economy? COVID? Blame immigrants! But wait, they don’t have a problem with LEGAL immigrants, just illegals. Wait, what’s that, they then shifted the goalposts and are working like hell to cut off legal immigration, too? Nazis marching in Charlottesville are good people? Supporters literally yelling “heil Trump?” An orchestrated campaign to delegitimize all media that doesn’t blindly support the regime, using the exact “lugenpresse” play the Nazis ran? Come on, man. This is going to get even more embarrassing for you, because I have 100 more of these.
IV) funny thing….Godwin himself said “nope, it’s cool, compare them to Nazis, it fits.”

Some of us have read a book or two. We know the plays and systems that authoritarians run on their rise to power, including the Nazis. And we’ve watched, with horror, as they’re being run again, right here at home. Even including the brown shirts and a violent attack on the legitimate government. Remember that one? That’s what your party has wrought. And do they own it, and try to make good? No. They double down. They call terrorists who literally attacked the heart of my government “tourists.” They fight any investigation or accountability.

If you stand with a party that supports those things, or at the very LEAST…those aren’t dealbreakers for you….then I know all I need to know about you.

I am a patriotic american. I love my country. And I hate - and I mean hate - those who attack it, and those who support, enable, and excuse them. You may as well be supporting, enabling, and excusing Al Qaeda.

I mean, if you want to know which “conservative values” I still hold dear, and why they mean that I hate the Republicans and those who support them. You fucking asked. I’m telling.

Well-stated.  Some things, like "trickle down economics" and the attendant laissez faire attitude toward business regulation, that seemed plausible 20 years ago, have been a near-complete failure at anything but enriching the corporate classes.

Either side is going to spend money like a drunken sailor.  I am now more amenable to spending more of it on the people than on the corporations.

Immigration, look at W and look now. Those aren’t vague talking points. You just appear to support a party without knowing anything about them. You can look up all of this pretty easily. You’ll have trouble finding policy positions for the party though. Do you know why that is?

#1 position of Republicans today:  Loyalty to Trump.

It took a fucking year for the RNC Chairwoman to publicly admit that Biden won, and that was only last week, all because she didn't want to upset Trump or his followers.

Spokeswoman for the GOP two days ago:

Quote

"As a leader of our party, defending President Trump and his record of achievement is critical to the GOP"
