IT team notes

Spoiler

By: Eric, Justin, and Gerry

TEAM

*Due to inclement weather, the team has been off since Monday and won’t return to activities until this Monday. The players got a small taste last week with more cardio sessions and weight training.

*Chris Adimora is still at nickel. It could change over the next few weeks, but today that’s where he’s at. We tend to think that won’t be his ultimate position so we keep checking as a way to better understand Pete Kwiatkowski’s defensive intentions.

*We’ve been asked if assistant linebacker coach Jeremiah George was retained. We still haven’t heard for sure but we don’t think he has been retained.

*Bijan Robinson is said to be ecstatic about the new staff. He was always going to do what was asked of him and be a leader, but he’s really taking to this staff and emerging as respected voice on offense.

*The feeling within the program is the psychological anchor has been removed. The program feels much more loose, much more fun, but still focused. Steve Sarkisian’s accessibility is in glaring contrast to Tom Herman’s approach. We’ll see if that manifests in the team playing more loose, having more fun, and stepping on the throats of inferior opponents, but for now, this is an excited group anxious to get going. He has these guys bought in early.

PK AT THE LONE STAR CLINIC

Pete Kwiatkowski is a very detailed dude, very big on fundamentals much like Chris Ash was in his presentation last year when he came to Texas. He talked a lot about the way he teaches pass rush and tackling and also a little on how he likes to structure his fronts, including against spread teams like he'll face in the Big 12.

Kwiatkowski also broke down his process for scheming up his fronts and gameplanning opponents. They were a base 3-4 defense at Washington but rarely used it. Usually they played a "nickel front" which for them was more four-down with the "Jack linebacker" as the field side/strongside defensive end and the "X linebacker" as the weakside end/outside linebacker. He said they liked for both of those guys to be in the 6-2+ and 260-pound range but it rarely works out like that. They normally install the defense with the Jack to the field and X to the boundary but after install they'll get more flexible and move guys around based on gameplanning.

He said they'd do the gameplanning on Sunday and Monday and then work through stopping the run and situational work throughout the week. He will have the gameplan ready early to guide practice but spend the week watching more film on offensive coordinators to get a feel for how they call plays and attack defenses during a game. He also noted he doesn't like to have too many auto-checks against certain offensive formations or motions. He wants to be able to send in a call and have all his players feel confident about it. If you start using auto-checks then teams start to know what you're in and can catch you in a bad spot. His new boss Steve Sarkisian has a lot of film proving that's true.

He also puts a big emphasis on red zone defense and gameplanning for those moments with packages and calls. He'll match up with whatever the offense wants to do. As an example, he's had goal line packages with six defensive linemen and a single cornerback if they need to check an offense in a jumbo set.

Those details mostly came in Q&A.

For his presentation he focused on his drills and techniques for pass-rushing and tackling. The tackling stuff is much of the same rugby style techniques Chris Ash emphasized, aiming for the bottom of the numbers to the knees and shoulder tackling. His drills work to teach guys to make decisions on the fly and to avoid head-up tackles. Many of his drills also avoid having to take guys to the ground all the time in practice.

Kwiatkowski's philosophy for drills is to create second nature reactions for his players with all their techniques, both in tackling and in the pass rush. He teaches a pass rush progression in which his guys start by establishing a power rush but will choose their pass rush and know their plan by their second step based on the pass set by the offensive lineman. Again, all of his drills and teaching are designed to try and make this habitual so they aren't thinking in games.

He gets them in a sprinter stance when it's time to rush, always works on bending, and he has a bunch of NFL players he's coached he draws on for examples. The same clips he shared with us are surely being sent to recruits.

The defensive philosophy in the pass rush is oriented around containing and affecting the quarterback, when they rush three they teach the guys to contain or move the quarterback. Even though he's having them explode from their get-off he's not going to let them blow by the quarterback.

It sounds like he's going to rely on the defensive front to do a lot of work for the defense, which is a good way to go against spread teams.

I'll take it. I've been called a lot worse and it's not the first time I've been called that.

Hell, I don't even remember that. I guess it happens more often than one would prefer.

I've heard good things about him from folks that are involved with recruiting. @golfclap and @maninblack both have been singing his praises on the recruiting board. Maybe they'll chime in.

I am pretty sure it is now an institutionalized policy that we employee as many failed Rutgers coaches as possible.

Their Head Coach position is the best Assistant Coach-in-training program in the country.

Be fair, the world was a better place when we had freshly minted fantasies of Cersei, Sansa, and Roz... and, I'll admit it, Brienne, too.

Biggest offseason question for each college football team in the Way-Too-Early Top 25

21. Texas Longhorns: Growing pains for Steve Sarkisian?

The Longhorns have talent. And Steve Sarkisian has proved his mettle as a playcaller. But coaching changes aren't always an instant success. Just ask Sarkisian's former mentor, Nick Saban, who lost to Louisiana-Monroe in his first season at Alabama. Mack Brown went 8-5 in his final season, and Charlie Strong went 6-7 the next year in Austin. Strong went 5-7 his last season and Tom Herman followed with a 7-6 season. After a 7-3 season last year, can Sarkisian break in a new quarterback and hit the gas? -- Wilson

Because you can run a muthafucka over in a big ass truck.

Pretty amazing to think Mack Brown was making $800k when he started here.
Thanks a lot Bill Clinton.

Source: Billy Glasscock joining Sarkisian's staff as director of player personnel

By FUCK CHIP BROWN  Feb 19, 2021

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has a new director of player personnel.  Billy Glasscock, a former coach who has served in player personnel roles at North Carolina State and Minnesota, has accepted the job of director of player personnel at Texas, a source close to the situation confirmed to Horns247 on Friday. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic was first to report.  Horns247 insider Mike Roach reported on Feb. 13 that Glasscock had become a leading candidate for the job after Sarkisian's initial focus on South Carolina's Drew Hughes became complicated by NCAA allegations of recruiting violations at Tennessee while Hughes was employed by the Vols.

Glasscock has been at North Carolina State since 2017 and helped the Wolfpack land in the Top 45 of recruiting classes every year with two Top-30 finishes. Before arriving in Raleigh, Glasscock served as Director of Recruiting Operations at Minnesota. Prior to Minnesota, Glasscock worked at Northern Illinois, Arizona Western and Joliet Junior College.

Steve Wiltfong, director of recruiting for 247Sports, reported on Feb. 14 that Glasscock would be a "terrific hire" for Texas.  Wiltfong said Glasscock is at the top of his profession, including the likes of Ohio State’s Mark Pantoni, Clemson’s Jordan Sorrells, Oklahoma's Drew Hill and Texas A&M’s Marshall Malchow because Glasscock is a strong evaluator of talent, is an excellent recruiter and is exceptionally organized.  "Texas needs to hire Billy and not think twice about it ever again," one of Glasscock's peers in the industry told 247Sports.

Entering his 20th year in college football, the first nine spent as a coach, Glasscock is the son of a roofer and carries his father's blue-collar mentality, according to thosse who've worked with him.

At NC State and Minnesota, Glasscock helped grow each of those respective recruiting departments and was also part of some of those program’s more successful seasons on the field in school history.  Glasscock was instrumental in identifying under-recruited talents that evolved into NFL Draft picks like safety Antoine Winfield (second-round pick and starter in the Super Bowl), tight end Maxx Williams (2nd round) running back David Cobb (fifth round), linebacker Damien Wilson (fourth round), cornerback Eric Murray (fourth round), cornerback Jalen Myrick (seventh round), receiver Tyler Johnson (fifth round), linebacker Kamal Martin (fifth round), safety Cedric Thompson (fifth round) and linebacker Blake Cashman (fifth round). The thing those guys had in common was Minnesota was the only Power Five offer for each and Cashman actually started out as a walk-on.

Glasscock helped court touted prospects as well, edge rusher Carter Coughlin and running back Jeff Jones at Minnesota with Peyton Wilson, Ricky Person, Donovan Knight, CJ Clark, Savion Jackson, Aaron McLaughlin, Josh Harris and Porter Rooks some of the four-star guys that came to NC State. These are some of the highest-ranked players the Gophers and the Wolfpack have recruited in the 247Sports Composite era.

Wiltfong said Glasscock will help Sarkisian and the Texas staff make sure the infrastructure is organized and that the program is always watching, evaluating and targeting the right guys while also being comfortable when recruiting goes national (as it did last weekend when 247Sports Composite five-star quarterback Maalik Murphy gave his verbal to Texas).
