I am so excited.  He was the one I voted for in the primary (though by the time NY got to ours, it was a moot point).

Yang For New York

I have some news to share! I am running for Mayor of New York City.

Though I have worked all over the country, I have lived in New York City my entire adult life; I moved into Manhattan when I was 21 years old right after college. I remember driving in with my parents’ Honda Accord full of belongings for my first apartment I was sharing with a roommate. The city felt enormous, and arriving here felt like a victory.

I never left. I came of age, found love, and eventually became an entrepreneur and a father in New York City. I was in the Garden for Larry Johnson’s 4-point play. I watched the towers fall and was part of the crowd that walked silently uptown away from the smoke. I biked my children to school on the West Side Highway, though it’s been Zoom lately. Seeing New York the way it is now, when many question whether it will ever come back, hurts my heart. The thought that I might be able to contribute to my city’s revival is both an incredible responsibility and opportunity.

And that’s why I’m running. I see a crisis and believe that I can help.

The coronavirus has devastated New York. I want to improve the lives of the 8.3 million people who live in the city and demonstrate what a proactive, modern government can do to actually solve the problems we see around us. I want to serve my community in its time of need.

Many of you supported me during my presidential campaign – thank you. This is our chance to demonstrate that our ideas work in the biggest city in the nation. We will run the largest Basic Income program in the history of the country, right here in New York City. We will lift hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers out of extreme poverty, putting cash relief directly into the hands of those who desperately need help now. We will invest in a human-centered economy, fact-based governance, a modern healthcare system, broadband for all and better treatment of our data, smart policing, technology in service of people, human dignity, ranked choice voting, grace and tolerance and everything else we have fought for. New York could become the anti-poverty city, leading other communities to follow suit.

Whenever I have a choice between something abstract and something real, I choose the real and human. Running for mayor is real and our potential impact is enormous. I can’t wait to get started.

New York is struggling right now. COVID has put hundreds of thousands of people out of work. Restaurants, bars, stores and small businesses are closing their doors for good. I'm running for Mayor to bring the perspective, approach, and innovation our city needs. We can solve our problems if we focus on doing so and have the right leadership. There are so many people that want to help New York get back on its feet - and we need a plan and a vision to rally around and build towards.

I hope that you are excited to join me in this campaign. Here is what I need from you.

First, let your friends in New York City know about this race. Their votes are what matter. Only 10% of New Yorkers vote in the average mayoral race, and we hope to sign up many new voters. The mayoral race is Ranked Choice Voting (!) so we have a great opportunity to demonstrate that a candidate who is focused on solutions and not politics can win.

Second, if you would like to see our ideas and leadership in action on the biggest stage in the country, please do make a donation. This campaign will be powered by you, the people, and I hope you see in this movement a brighter future not just for the residents of New York but for communities everywhere. Eligible contributions from New York City residents of up to $250 will be matched 8 to 1!

Third, if you want to volunteer to textbank, phonebank and sign up voters, please join us at YangforNY.com.

This campaign should be a lot of fun if we do it right. Who doesn’t want to visit New York City?

The Democratic primary – open to registered Democrats in New York City – is on June 22nd so acting quickly will be crucial. This will be a spirited race. But I’m confident that if we put forward a positive vision for the millions of people in New York that we understand the real problems they face and are here to help, we will win.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to make a positive difference. Let’s make the most of it.

New York, New York! Let’s go!

Back on the trail,

- Andrew

I have to check with my upper east side friends & Family first to see how I feel about this.

And that one guy I bought drugs once from Staten island

Running for mayor of NYC and being mayor of NYC seems like a great way to get people to dislike you. Hope he does well.

Legit curious what his coalition is. Versus someone like Eric Adams or Scott Stringer.

Hope he wins but yeah, that job doesn’t have the greatest track record of noble public servants.

I wonder if the Asian vote will come out for him. If so, that should put him in good position since less than 10% of the population votes in these mayoral elections anyway. Plus the yuppie/professional and hipster crowd will probably vote in higher numbers. There are over 1.3 MM Asians in NYC proper, the majority of them Chinese.

The Black, Hispanic, and ethnic White vote will be an uphill battle. Going to have to do work in those council areas.

This primary also has ranked choice voting.

I thought he moved to Georgia.  Guess it didn't take.

Cool video, but I'm still not sold on UBI. The NYC tax base isn't enough to support it.

Was just helping out temporarily for the Senate elections. Interested to see how this works out as someone who supported Yang in the primaries.

It is very courageous. He could have just sat back as some kind of CNN celebrity and got some job in the Biden Administration but no he wants a real job, one of the toughest in the political world, and to make a real difference. That is why he is the real deal.

He is not really doing a UBI in NYC just for that reason, just for the poorest residents.

That was just while he was campaigning for Warnock and Ossoff.

Not sure what will happen, but I know it will be entertaining. Yang is an Entourage Criterion Collection DVD set in human form.

All I can say is, be careful what you wish for.  Yang want's a high profile position.  It would be nice if Biden gave him a cabinet position or had him heading an agency.

  • 3 months later...

Y’all been following his candidacy?

He’s apparently the front runner AND a complete shitshow.

Like, he picked the worst possible example here lol.

And his comments about Israel and Palestine have been yikes.

I registered to vote for the first time to support yang.

He was out of contention by then but why not vote for the only person with actual solutions, following humanity first,  and willing to put those actual ideas out there.

Alas, I know my vote was wasted... I wish he'd move to a smaller town and actually build a government for the people.

If I lived in NYC, he'd have my vote

I will be voting next month and while I am still undecided on the person I will vote for I can say the vote will be going to someone other than this candidate.  He will still likely be the next mayor though.

Cops are great at dealing with the mentally ill this is well established.

lol

NYC mayor has lots of pull in Israel / Palestine relations?  That’s like being concerned over the abortion stance of someone running for TX Railroad Commissioner.

If the right can elect loons like Marge, Boobert, Tubberville, etc. why can’t the left get their own gaggle of nuttiness?

In many ways his campaign has been great in that he’s repeatedly highlighted what a complete buffoon he is and how utterly unfit he is to be our mayor, even if one could get over the fact that he bailed from New York during the pandemic. I think I’ll be voting for Garcia as first choice, although I’m not sure yet. I haven’t decided on second choice either.

Yikes on bikes! NYC about to elect another Republican in Democratic clothing.

Maybe this one won't kill grandmas in nursing homes though.

You're right. They usually get promoted and given extra ammo.

I'm not following this race at all, but I saw he made a shittastic appearance in front of some gay group where he seemed to think as long as he could name drop some gay bars he was in the clear.  Really pissed off the people in attendance.  I see that he's not limited himself to bad performances just in front of gay audiences....

I'm sorry, maybe this one won't write political messages on the street, and have it guarded by cops.

I saw Yang was getting killed for his Israel tweets; funny. Democrats don't deserve Yang.

Clearly what we need more of in politics are techbros with no understanding of anything but math.

Yang should do the right thing and drop out of this race. He will not do that because this is not about helping NYC regain its footing or even about helping out the human beings who live here. His words and actions show someone who is in no way prepared to lead a city of over 8 million people. His ability to connect with people from various backgrounds and walks of life is non-existent. That is a major strike considering there is no more diverse city in the world than this one. His words about mental health alone should be enough for him to not be elected. He is in no way prepared for the mental health crisis happening in this city. Saying a police officer needs to be on scene is very disheartening. Having Stephen Miller in your corner should be enough to have influential Democrats getting everyone to coalesce around another candidate (And not Eric Adams either, but at least he stayed here during the height of the pandemic).

He should probably head to New Paltz, the city that claims him as a resident, and stay there and do the unselfish thing and be there for his family. He said he left to go New Paltz during the pandemic because of that. Leave New York City to someone who was actually here and did not leave when, you know, an aspiring mayoral candidate would have been needed the most by the populace. When the city was being ravaged by the pandemic, and holy sweet Lord was it a rough time last spring, Mr. Yang was nowhere to be found. I feel like Mr. Yang is just using the city as a grand experiment for some of his ideas. We do not need people in government here, or anywhere else in this country for that matter, with that mindset. I do not hate or dislike him as a person though. I feel he just does not have empathy for others and that is a disqualifier for me.

As opposed to the BAO which is nobody understanding math lol

None of the above is leading in the polls. Monty Brewster would be proud.

At least he didn't say something like "You know, one of my best friends growing up was gay, but I didn't realize it at the time as his dick didn't taste like shit, ba dum tss!  That was funny, right?"

I wouldn't get all caught up in Stephen Miller being in "Yang's corner."  Stephen Miller is screwing with Democrats by saying one of them is right on.

LOL, we need a how it started / how it's going asap.  The wheels are off!

Leaving the city during the pandemic should absolutely disqualify him. When questioned about it, he gave just about the worst possible answer imaginable:

Quote

“Can you imagine trying to have two kids on virtual school in a two-bedroom apartment, and then trying to do work yourself?” Mr. Yang said in the initial interview.

No fucking shit dude, it was hard. Millions of people did this because they didn't have the luxury of escaping to the Hudson Valley. How on earth does anyone connect with this fucking robot?

Amazing post.

If I ever ran for local office I would welcome the opportunity to NOT comment on anything outside of my sphere.

Yang rules. If you people want to gaslight, gatekeep and democratboss him to death, so be it, but I don't have to be happy about it.

Well, if Stephen Miller and the cigar jackass think he’s great then what’s the issue???? Right?

I remember it when he said it. On its own it shows a disconnect with the millions who had even smaller dwellings in apartments nowhere close to as nice as his who had to struggle to stay afloat while bills piled up and people all around them were dying from COVID. When taken with everything else Mr. Yang has said it shows a human being with a complete lack of interpersonal skills and empathy. The people here should at least have a mayor that has the ability to show compassion and some sense of humanity. That is something that should be a requirement for the job.

When I read that, especially after all of the protests from last summer, I shook my head. He has no plan to take on the mental health crisis here. To even come to the conclusion that you want a police officer on scene to speak with someone who is mentally ill shows he has quite literally ignored everything related to it that people have been pushing for here.

Andrew Yang is an idiot's idea of a smart man like Donald Trump is a poor man's idea of a rich man.
