Seeing them play the MTY Borregos or UANL Tigres would be pretty cool and draw a big crowd. Fun facts about ONEFA: there’s like 7 or 8 teams called “Borregos Salvajes” because Monterrey Tech uses that mascot for all their campuses in the different cities. Super stupid. But the dominant one is the team at the OG campus in Monterrey. And today I learned that Arkansas State for some reason has a campus in Querétaro, and they have a football team there also called the Red Wolves.

This marks the first announcement of games in program history, as the football team is set to play its first-ever game on Aug. 30, 2025. “This is another milestone moment for our program, department, university and community as we take the next step toward starting a Division I football program and begin building our future schedules,” UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. “This is the first of what will be many announcements as we get closer to kickoff, providing our fans exciting updates about future opponents for both home and away competitions. Playing games on the road against an NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference opponent like Texas State gives us an opportunity to gain exposure for UTRGV and the Rio Grande Valley while engaging our central Texas alumni.”

The Runners on the San Antonio area for a large chunk of their inaugural roster, It did the job to draw local and regional interest. It didn’t take them too long to attract from other areas of the state and nation for that matter and the roster became less local.

Most of the valley representation is by way of the PSJA North Raiders, which is the last place where Coach Bush's dad (who is now his Director of High School Relations) coached. HS OL's are losing roster spots in bigger programs to transfer rules. Go find some potential stars that need to bulk up speed speed speed speed speed

The upside is they are playing in the FCS in the Southland. They shouldn't try to fast track like UTSA did and move up to FBS or whatever they call it now. In fact stay there until the SLC dissolves as we know it or FCS changes drastically. And even then if FCS starts offering less scholarships to encourage some D2 schools to move up , they should stay there. I'm afraid though as a former Texas A&I student and longtime fan this will be another nail in the programs coffin. aggy has no interest in helping any other program under it's system other than Tarleton State right now. They've decided Tarleton is going to be their UTA or UTSA and roll with it. They have or are spending huge sums of money on both the academic and athletic side to give them that boost. August 26, 20241 yr FCS has athletes that get drafted each year. Their problem going forward, just like the G5, is the new portal. I think I read where 40%+ of the the G5 players that made “All Conference” honors in 2023, left/portalled to a P5 school. It’s almost like the minor leagues to get experience and get your name out there.Hook’em!!!

My dad's from Kingsville (he and my brother took a few credits from A&I), and he's been saying for a couple years this might do in A&I. They really don't seem to be on the way up much, and D2 doesn't seem to be sustainable. It's weird seeing teams that used to be mainstays on the Javelina's schedule (and were often under the Javs in the standings) move up to greener pastures. I guess it's all about resources at that level. Kingsville also being a stagnant town probably doesn't help. UTRGV grows, and less Valley kids will want to move to Kingsville. Same with TAMUCC.

Agreed. I can think of bunch of schools that have moved up that were once regulars on the Javelinas schedule. Or teams they would see in the playoffs. One of them is Texas State which was SWT back at my time taking undergrad classes at A&I. That game was the first game of the season and would sell out both stadiums and then some. Ironically my daughter will be starting classes at Texas State tomorrow and we moved her in last weekend to the campus dorms. The staging area was the football stadium parking lot and the stadium today is a far cry from the stadium it was back when I went up to watch my first A&I/SWT game. That’s just one school of many that have moved up the greener pastures. Tarleton is another one where had you told me 10 years ago, they would get a premier slot on ESPN 2 on pre opening week in front of national TV audience, I’d say you were nuts. The worse thing to happen to that school was to become an aggy system school. It’s sad some levers can’t be pulled to get them out an into a new system. Considering UT already has two system schools in South Texas and A&M has three in addition to Kingsville with Corpus, Laredo and San Antonio and the UofH has a Victoria campus, Tech would be a logical choice.
