It was brilliant that the inaugural game was against a D2 cupcake. Wonderful for confidence. Now they're on the road against a fellow five-letter FCS opponent, PVAMU, coming off a close win over Texas Southern.

I'll take PVAMU in a close one.

Puro pinche 956. I’ll want to make it to a game. I understand tailgating space is sold out and RGV gameday food has the potential to rank with LSU as best in the country.

A lot of my old high school classmates were there and my brother was in a suite with a UT Regent from the valley

Let's see how they do against DI competition. But no question the fanbase is there. I want to see this program succeed and quickly promote to FBS.

The heart & soul of the SB program is their 5’6 junior running back Fabian Garcia. He runs like every carry is his last one and the team goes as he goes. I don’t know how he compares to Austin competition, probably poorly. However it’s not everyday a valley kid runs for 300 yards in one game against a San Antonio school, which is what he did last week:

Special shout-out to this guy, who joined the UTRGV program as a day 1 walk on and worked his way up the depth chart to get some carries in the opener, and scored a touchdown late in the game.

UTRGV outgained Sul Ross by 674 to 74 yards, and the Lobos had nearly as many penalty yards (70) as offensive yards.  The Vaqueros scored every time they had the ball except for a missed field goal in the fourth quarter, scoring 9 touchdowns and one field goal.  UTRGV quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger completed 18 of 19 passes for 365 yards and 5 touchdowns in the first half (!) and the Vaqueros lead 49-0 at halftime.  UTRGV took the foot off the gas in the second half with their second-teamers and got to spend most of the day celebrating their football program’s first-ever win.

You haven’t seen anything.   They play Langston next week followed by Texas Wesleyan.

17-0. The SWAC livestream capacity is ass.

I was disappointed to not find it on ESPN+

First points ever allowed in program history, 17-3

A running into the kicker that the awful broadcast team missed before commercial break. 17-0 still, but UTRGV is probably going to be scored on here.

Wow. They fail to convert on 4th and 4 inside the 10. UTRGV preserves its streak of holding opponents scoreless for one more drive.

Do you have a link to the game?

The Vaqueros hang on to beat the PVA&M Panthers 27-21. Undefeated still.

We got Tony Diaz to commit at WR. The exact kind of explosive playmaker the offense needed.

He has now scored a TD in each of their first 2 games, is Marburger’s primary target at WR and is already a team captain. Why people doubt my scouting ability is beyond me.

Up next a couple of NAIA games before they get to the meat of their FCS schedule. It’s good they already took one against an FCS opponent. Smart to let the team feel good and win some games and get the fans excited.

I’d like to see then win 2 remaining FCS games and not get blown out against UIW or SFA.

SFA blows again - year 6 of Carthel and they are still shit.

Saw they were picked 2nd in the Southland. A loss to a P5 school and a decent game against ranked ACU won’t sink them. UIW is the class of the conference but they may challenge for a 2nd playoff spot.

For sure not an FCS power but they’ll be a challenge for UTRGV.

It looked bad for a moment when PVAMU took the lead. The halftime show pumped the crowd up and that energy led to 14 unanswered in hostile territory. I've been very impressed with Coach Bush and QB Marburger.

Rooting for the Vaqueros!  Except against my McNeese Cowboys.

Hook’em!!! and Geaux Cowboys!

I thought Colby was a trajectory to use SFA as stepping stone to take over a non Power four program and then make the leap from there? It’s delayed or derailed now.   Had he taken a program in FCS like Tarleton or UIW who are spending a lot of money, he might be on schedule.

I agree but they have not advanced at all. He can’t make in-game adjustments and his clock management makes Reid blush. It’s depressing.

Winless NAIA HBCU today in Edinburg. Fully expect it to be a drubbing like we saw Week 1.

They will feast against another NAIA school then will have a competent FCS opponent in SE Louisiana coming off of a beatdown by LSU. Good to get some confidence up by scheduling winnable games.

Man they have a nice stadium. Would love to get down there for a game.

They were supposed to play last weekend at Sams in Brownsville, but the turf upgrade wasn’t done. Allegedly still committed to a game in Brownsville due to stupid local politics (merger of UTPA and UT-B). The Edinburg venue is where all the games should be.

Receiving Votes in the FCS coaching poll!!

Starts conference play this week at Southeastern, also receiving votes.

First loss in program history to SE Louisiana on the road in the Southland opener 45-31. Next week Houston Christian is winnable.

UTRGV would need to run the table for a chance at the 24-team playoff. To do that they have to beat 5-1 (2-0) Lamar in Beaumont and SFA in Nac.

Lamar has a notable win over South Dakota (having a down year) and they'll get Southeastern Louisiana at home in Beaumont.

SFA won't face Southeastern Louisiana, but they did play Sul Ross at home and crushed them 63-0, which is a common opponent who UTRGV also crushed, 66-0.

I don't see Southeastern Louisiana dropping two games in conference play, but even if Lamar beats them and both UTRGV and SFA beat Lamar, the head-to-head advantage would go to Southeastern Louisiana.

The conference is perceived as weak, so I don't think there are more bids besides the automatic bid for winning the conference.

Vaqueros down at the half on the road in Beaumont. 20-7 let's see what Coach Bush can cook up

Vaqueros score again! They lead in Beaumont 21-20 with 9:38 to go

Lamar drills a long FG with a 1:03 to go. Cardinals up 23-21. RGV gonna need to find points

After 10 games the Vaqueros sit at 7-3, and 3-3 in conference play. Very solid season for a first year program. Tony Diaz is unironically the gem of the team and is probably gone to a P4 school after this season. A redshirt freshman that’s already one of the top receivers in the conference, he’s been selected as a captain, coaches picked him to attend the media days and address the media multiple times, he’s got it all. 3 years of eligibility left will be attractive as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

UTRGV finishes their season with an impressive 9-3 record and were undefeated at home in their first season of play. If Lamar didn’t kick that game winning 50 yard FG against them a few weeks ago, this team would be in the playoffs. They have proven in year one they belong in the FCS.

Couldn’t really ask for more in an inaugural season. SLC on notice, this is a program that will compete. I’m hoping ACU knocks out Lamar.
