Policy shit I like (for non liberals)- in the spirit of unity

I heard Biden say he will admit when mistakes are made.  That's good.  Acknowledge imperfection and that mistakes are going to happen....not due to negligence but just b/c that is life.  Set expectations at a reasonable level.

on the optimist's side of things - maybe, just maybe, the obliteration of the Republican party gets the democrats some runway to try and catch the US up to other western countries in terms of social services and quality of life. sadly, its the democrats so I don't think it will happen ergo my first ergo.

Dream on.  My FB feed is already littered with Trumpkins screaming about unemployment and the national debt.  I'm not exaggerating . . . that's the new angle, and it's clearly being fed to them by FOX et al.

It was predictable.  Hell, it was predicted right here by myself and dozens of others.  This isn't rocket science.  We are in a pitched battle that will never end.  If I could figure out a good way to split this country in two (maybe by IQ?) I'd do it.  Alas, there is no good way.  We are fucked for the forseeable future and will wallow in a ridiculously partisan muck from which we won't escape, we just won't drown.  It's maddening.

thats disheartening to say the least. almost robotic and without any sense of present, past of future. another casualty of losing the truth.

The sad irony is that, should they pick their battles, they'd have a point about unemployment (pre-covid).  Where they go sideways is on debt and GDP.  Pre-pandemic debt skyrocketed under Trump, and GDP growth was fair to middlin', basically range-bound as it was under Obama.  Facts don't matter, though.  The DOW!  Fucking idiots.

We have, with $$$. And this board constantly claims it is what has ruined our country.

You think this country is split in half by money? Maybe I’m bad at math but half is 50% right?

Maybe 95/5.  Not 50/50.

Well, probably works about the same for the IQ you proposed. You can say anyone with 100 and above over here in this group as easy as you can say anyone with 100k in liquid cash.  The limit is wherever you deem it to be.   There are less “haves”, much the same as there are less brilliant people.

That is the example that is parroted here most, I believe.  It’s news to no one, but the country is split in 100 ways.  Religion, race, financial equality, education, when you believe a life is a life, and whether you have the right to own a firearm.  Fuck, dozens more than that.  Basically any of the “single issue voter” columns provide large gaps for many in the US.

But to answer your question, I would say 99.999999% don’t think they have enough money. Whether that’s factually true or not can be another discussion. Fucking Bezos doesn’t think he has enough yet.

I would bet good money . . . like, a couple of Filet O'Fish sammiches worth or so . . .  that there is massive correlation between halvesies on most of those demographic groups.

I don’t disagree. There’s a fuckload of poor people in the religion and abortion group alone.

Yup. This is a real screen shot, from Thursday evening, when Biden had been in office for a day and a half, not a week. There was zero chance Biden would be given a fair shot, because fox news and the like have literally melted the brains of half the country.

Speaking of short term ism, the cancelling of the Keystone XL pipeline is bad for Houston in the short term.

It will be ramped up. It was getting hard to defend Trump, but it’s easy to bitch about everything Biden does.

I admit I am guilty. I didn't use to watch cable news channels until after 2017. I watch CNN mostly but do get sick of Don Lemon and go to Lawrence O'Donnell who is just as slanted in his opinions but entertaining. But I have critical thinking skills so I know what is happening.

I used to at least watch PBS NewsHour and ABC News before and find myself a bit bored now by them. I looked on the News Bias chart and they are very high on reliability and neutrality for the most part. That is where I kind of thought of maybe make everybody label their News so people would know what they are consuming news wise.

The news should mostly be boring. If it isn’t boring, there’s a good chance it’s entertainment, not news.

That’s why I started this thread. To counter that last inclination. It’s cancerous.

All that I requite is a simple ‘you can't be a liberal to bring that in here- this is stuff that reaches across the aisle- or good policy that isn't on a leftists dream list.’

It’s political. Seems like the right place for a political post.

That’s so absurd. When you are a GOP governor of a deep deep blue state (or a dem governor in a ruby red state) you have no agenda or no platform or the like. The voters put you there in essence to veto the dumbest shit the nuttiest members of the predominant party get though on a majority vote but without enough support for a veto override.
Besides- I’m not holding Mitt up as an someone with great or even good ideas. I’m using that as an exemplar for what I’m talking about here. But you are a pretty smart guy- I think you know that and are likely trolling me.

"What would Romney do" is in no way a metric to determine what is and is not good policy.  Hedgies provide nothing in terms of leadership for national economies.

One other peeve - there are vast differences between the left, liberals, and progressives, just as there are some differences between Trump Republicans and never-Trumper Republicans.  Please mind the gap.

My father told me that Romney was a RINO and not a real conservative like Ted Cruz. He believes the economy under Obama was depressed and rocketed under Trump and his Tax cuts. He listens to Levine and thinks Fox is too liberal. He cannot define socialism, communism, conservative, but uses those words as if he does.

Years ago he loved Bush. He loved fiscal responsibility and he supported the wars. Now he claims he didn’t support the Iraq war, he claims He didn’t vote for Romney, and he thinks Ted Cruz is great. He doesn’t really have a problem with the terrorists who stormed the Capitol more so than a furrowed brow.

He has almost zero ideology at this point. He just wants to ban abortions, and has been convinced by his church that the gays are sicker than average. He used to be inclusive and believed in equality, but Fox and other right-wing media turned him into a racist that was fine with kids being separated from their families and forced to stand in court, in a foreign language and ask for a lawyer. Since toddlers don’t know to do this, fuck them. He agrees its wrong, but supports the people who did this.

It's like "diplomacy" is a bad word these days. If we disagreed with some aspects of how the organization is run or operated, then we flex our muscle as the United Fucking States of America to advocate for those changes, and sweet talk our allies into supporting what we want, while explaining why. If we get outvoted, then we accept it, or we keep pressing on trying to obtain change. This is how society fucking works. A return to normalcy is so welcome right now.

Yeah, joining the WHO was an immediate no-brainer.  So far, so good on foreign policy.

Speaking of short-sighted, the “hurr-durr, international law and Alliances are bad” crowd is exactly that. They absolutely do not get that almost all these institutions and agreements and norms were basically written by us, for us. Other countries tolerate it because in exchange, we agree to adhere to these norms, rules, and decisions. In exchange for the entire game being rigged in our favor, we agree to take our medicine sometimes on individual issues like banana tariffs or whatever. It’s as if you’re in Las Vegas and the house flipped out and turned the table over after losing a single hand.

Another positive step— coming back to the table on New START.

I'm going to troll y'all a bit on this one even though I understand your point, such as it is.

Justin got a phone call from Biden on Friday (for real) and while Trudeau is disappointed that the construction project on the pipeline is halted, their conversation went something like this:

President Biden: Hello Justin, it's Joe. How are you?

Prime Minister Trudeau: Hello, Joe. I know it's you. I'm okay, a little disappointed in the Keystone Project, but you know Joe, I'll take it over getting that beau cave skeet out of the White House.

ok what is beau cave skeet?

I think that's the name of her improv group?  I think.

It’s a skeet range in Beau Cave, off 620.

I think it's plural, Beau CaveS, off  of 2244.

Beau cave (French Quebecois) = idiot

Skeet (Newfie origin) = white trash

I got $10 that it has something to do with spelunker porn.

In the spirit of unity the House should kick out the dumb Q Anon bitch from Georgia and maybe we should pay attention to who votes against doing it and vote against them in 2022.
