they hit all their shit. all of it.

too many jags and just 2 or 3 elite players. i get it. but come on man, make a difference with something. vanilla horsefucking is not how i want to die

We were running 3-1-7 set at unusual times and it was successful. The Dline played the run pretty well considering how much they were on the field. At one point the Georgia offense went 4 punts in a row followed by an interception.

It really boils down to the secondary. Losing the Thorpe award winner and Mukuba is killing this defense right now. He just doesn’t trust anyone on the outside not named Manny.

PK has to take some heat for this along with Akina...

Akina was an awful hire.

Our defense has some great players up front, and against many of the offenses we have played this year they have been able to cover for weaknesses in the back end.

Teams that have talented offensive lines (or can just get away with holding all day like Vandy for a half) have been able to neutralize them and expose the rest of the defense.

Lining up in soft zone has been a PK trademark whole time he's been here.

Confused zones have always been an Akina trademark.

Toxic combo.

I’m disappointed where the defense has fallen to. We were fortunate Mateer sucked ass against us because ou had opportunities on our secondary. But really since the bye week before Florida, the defense has seemingly gotten progressively worse. The secondary is absolutely awful. Not sure what can actually be done, but damn, we gotta be better than what we’ve been.

Great coordinators don’t require specific position coaches in order to succeed. It is your job to coordinate the defense. You are being paid $2 million. Front 7, back end, blitz packages, everything.

It’s ridiculous PK has coached football for almost 40 years yet apparently needs some special voice in the secondary in order to properly function.

The DBS were playing so far off the ball and receivers because we suck. Giving them the short yardage instead of the long throws, even on 3 and 8 or 4th  and 10. The corners cant cover and would have been deep man up

At least thats how i am grasping at straws trying to figure the retardation out

Eh, as said before, it seems to be PK's strong preference to keep things in front of the D.  Remember DIllon Gabriel?  There have been some other pre-Akina performances like that.

Akina just compounds the problem.

After Georgia’s first couple of TD drives we adjusted and started playing more aggressive coverages. That's when UGA started using WR shifts to get us out of alignment and create confusion/miscommunications. They also took advantage of our aggressiveness by rolling out safety valves to the open flats whenever we tried to blitz.

PK's soft bullshit to start the game needs to change.  Georgia was a hot knife through butter.

Did Lance Jackson play yesterday? Didn't notice him out there.

Having a secondary coach to properly pair up with P.K.'s fronts has been such a problem during Sark's tenure, that I'm now ready to give in & have Sark go ahead & hire Jimmy Lake as Secondary Coach after this season.

I didn't realize this was allowed under the rules.  Wish we tried some of this.

They had the perfect solution to decent pass rush nearly every time.

Coaching.  Preparation.

As long as PK is the DC here we are going to struggle against teams that can execute well at taking what our defensive scheme gives, granted it only happens once or twice a year. But last night was the most undisciplined we’ve looked regarding assignment football. That is criminal coming out of a bye week.

This is what happens when you start playing offenses with a pulse. There were warning signs after the UK game.

Texas defense national ranks over the last 3 games:

114th - Points/Game (34.7)

93rd - Yards/Game (408.3)

104th - Points/Play (.458)

101st - Red Zone Scoring (90.9%)

yep.  Everybody thought we'd be fine by just getting Taaffe back but the warning signs have been there well before he was out.

I think PK has a bit of volatility to him as a DC. His greatest strength is also his biggest weakness. He is very open to ideas and can let the secondary do their thing. When the secondary has capable leader, the results are very good. When he is paired with someone less technically proficient the results can be middling.

This makes sense as the last time we all collectively saw this soft shit was back in the 2022 year when B12 teams were chewing us alive in 2nd halves

I've noticed that PK coaches a whole lot better when he has 4 or 5 fast, athletic NFL-caliber upperclassmen in the secondary. Somethin', somethin' . . . Jimmies and Joes . . . somethin'.

Our pass defense with PK has always been suspect, IMO.  It's his weakness.

I wish oh wish that was my biggest concern with the program.

Not last year. It was a strength. But otherwise agree

but Texas did some odd blitzes. Watch the long Branch run. Texas blitzes, McDonald has Branch in man and the middle of the field is vacant. He is open in 2 steps and McDonald has zero chance to make a play. That is annoying, but what is really concerning is watching a player like Taaffe bust coverages. If it was just someone like Littleton or Filsame busting coverages, you could understand. When it is pervasive and someone like Taaffe is included it is a coaching problem

Right but you could make that assumption for any coach. Kirby has been exposed in the passing game this year against teams that can take advantage of it. I think it might have been @Codaxx that mentioned PK needs the position coaches under him that know the scheme 100% or at least can translate it to the players. Too many errors in the secondary that stem from mental lapses rather than just getting beat.

I don’t think Taafe has ever been great in coverage. He’s good in run support and knowing what to do.

???? That is what I am talking about. It is really concerning when a smart veteran like Taaffe is blowing assignments. I can understand if a WR that runs a 4.2 cooks him.

Clown show, just like the OL. And now our team has to play the 13th ranked offense likely without the best defensive player on the team.🤢

Weird to see how our offense and defense have traded places. We just gave up 500+ to a winless (in conference) Arky team.

Not beating aggy if the secondary plays like they did today.

I realize most of you don’t pay any attention to teams until we play them but Arkansas has one of the top offenses in the country. They have been scoring points all season long: I thought the defense played well from the late 2nd Q until the game was out of reach. We were never going to shut that team out. Also consider we were missing Hill.

Notre Dame D had no problem in Fayettenam

I don’t understand how we still can’t play a zone.  Tired of screaming at my tv every 3rd down watching our DBs line up 10 yards back and still turn and run at the snap.  Could only imagine how many sacks we would have if we actually tried to bump the receivers AM’s disrupt timing.  What’s the point of having the best pass rusher in the country if you are going to concede quick easy throws to the offense?

I’ve been saying this all season, but I have to think it’s just that college kids aren’t good enough to do it successfully. Sort of like how college baseball kids have trouble with the curveball.

Whose starting spot did Kade Phillips take?

Was it Guilbeau bc i swear I saw him out there burnt again last night

Also has Littleton been getting the same amount of snaps as previously? Feel like I don't see his name often maybe that's a good thing

The decline of the defense has been consistent and pervasive this season. The issues in the first half were on every level. PK defenses have for the most part been disciplined, if not a bit boring. Seeing a defense that busts coverages and struggles with run fits is the biggest surprise of the season.

I think they were rotating multiple guys.  On TV I only saw Guilbeau once and it was on special teams.

Maybe we are saving the concept of inside leverage for A&M.

Phillips started at CB and Littleton at Star

Any coach or film bros wanna comment?

I guess Simmons is one of the few DL who don't line up so squarely?

Be interesting if this changes heading into aggie game

What exactly is he talking about? Most DL line up square to the LOS. Simmons lines up ready to jump in the backfield any time he’s not dropping (foolishly) into coverage.

Haven't read a good defensive breakdown post Arky and was hoping something was linked here.  I fully realize Arky has one of the better offenses in the nation and that we were missing Hill, but from the stands, I was surprised how easily they were moving it on us most of the first half combined with shit tackling and receivers running free.  Taffe had one of his worst games I can recall.  Hopefully that was just rust and he'll be better this weekend and hopefully Hill can play, because we're going to have to have a better defensive performance than what we showed most of Arky game to win Friday.
