People who leave voicemails.

My wife had a biopsies done on a couple of spots on her neck and shoulder last week.  She got the results back today letting her know that there were no problems with either.  It got me to thinking that Arnold Schwarzenegger could make some extra coin by selling a recording that dermatologists could use in such cases: "Congratulations!  It's not a toomah!"

That was the point.

This doesn't really belong in the Sucks to be Old thread because it doesn't deal with gout or breaking hips or whatever.

I refuse to say I'm "old" -- but maybe I am -- because these "new jobs" are idiotic.

And now I'm sad for my kids having to listen to these people at future parties that they'll attend.

Ranking the Piranha franchise:

4) Piranha 3DD (2012)

It’s a direct sequel to 2010 remake Piranha 3D, and the fact that there’s a boob joke in the title, really lets you know right off the bat what you’re in for. The setting this time is a water park whose cheerfully sleazy majority owner (Anchorman’s David Koechner) has seized upon the idea to add “adult” elements to the park (like a combination pool and strip club with a “cooch cam” for underwater ogling), to the disgust of his level-headed stepdaughter (Arrowverse star Danielle Panabaker). This jiggly entry in the franchise is directed by John Gulager (Feast); features supporting turns and/or cameos by Gary Busey, David Hasselhoff (“as himself”), and Piranha 3D’s Christopher Lloyd; and is most notable for the scenes in which a just-hatched piranha enters a woman’s vagina while she’s skinny dipping, then chomps off her boyfriend’s penis when they have sex. Have CG effects ever served a purpose so gross, surreal, raunchy, and gut-bustingly goofy?

If you happen to have a  3D tv or projector, rumor has it you can rent/buy and stream the 3D version from Vudu (now fandango at home)

Something has stuck with me for a long time, but for some reason it just popped back into my head and it got me into some deep thoughts on the matter. Many years back, I was talking to one of the older attorneys in my firm. I'd say she was in her late 50s or so. I referred to someone in the district clerk's office as a girl (e.g., "one of the girls in the office is pulling that for me") and she corrected me by saying "women, one of the women is working on it." I took her meaning. I guess it can comes across as ... belittling? chauvinistic? derogatory? something like that. I wouldn't say "one of the boys in the office is pulling that for me." I'd say "one of the guys..."

But "boys and girls" are the common word pairing. Same with "men and women" or "ladies and gentlemen." But for guys, I guess it's "guys and gals?" I would never say "one of the gals over there is helping me." That sounds way worse. In a formal setting, like if I was in court, I think I'd say "one of the women" but I'd still say "one of the guys" if referring to a man. I think "guys" is generally acceptable in both a casual and formal context. I can't picture myself ever saying "one of the men in the office," but that's technically the equivalent word.

Anyway, so my random thought on the matter: "Is there even a casual, female equivalent to "guys"? If not, is "girls" actually derogatory or offensive in every context when referring to an adult female?

It's "Guys and Dolls" ... so you should be using "Dolls" when referring to them.

no, fuck no, and anyone who believes it is a cunt.

language is flexible and thus its interpretation malleable: it depends on speaker, audience, formality, and other context.  whether its offensive is like porn: you'll know it when you see it.

we have social contest at work tracking volunteered step-count to encourage fitness.  tallies are compared against different work teams, buildings, but also between "guys" vs "girls".  nobody is offended.  its a casual way to refer to a group without needing to be all corpo-formal about it.

that said, if i was referring to the fact that a colleague in specific did something, i wouldn't call that person a "girl", nor would i call her a "woman" in the same manner i wouldnt call out a "man" either.  the gender serves no purpose for that use so i would simply say "a clerk is pulling that for me".

Use ladies instead of girls.  I think its less a casual thing and more of an age thing.

Checks out.  You just blew my mind.  I've traveled to W Africa a bunch and never considered that.

I learned this week that Denton does not have an HEB but there is an Albertson's (in Texas they are almost exclusively in the DFW market) and a WinCo (same thing, DFW or OKC and then the west coast.)

Why do we expect suspected drunk drivers to make sound legal decisions? Seems like a trap to me. No, never been arrested for one. But just watching a YT video. The cop is trying explain the process to a 18 yo girl who will go on to blow a .19. So she is asking the cop for advice. He can't give her any, of course. But how do you expect someone that drunk to decide anything legally?

That pissed my wife off. She worked an assignment for a few months there. Every time I would go up I had a HEB list of shit she wanted. My dad always asks for HEB canned peas. Why I do not know.

Gabon, at one time was on our radar for retirement.  Still has an outside chance.

Anyhoo, so I was thinking the other day shouldn't chili come in a small squeeze packet/things like ketchup?  I know, I know you can get chili cheese fries or tots or.... But wouldn't a small amount of chili go with some eggs, baked tater, Fritos, or something else?

Vine, not wine. And shtine, unless more northerly, then maybe stine.

But, you know, this Mandela effect thing apparently has an example in which some folks claim that in their experience that line of children's books were authored by a couple named Berenstein and others say it was Berenstain. I'm not sure what the majority remembrance seems to be, but I am absolutely certain it was "stain".

You save the same type of file from the same source to the same location tens of thousands of times, and each new instance comes as a complete fucking surprise to the machine, so instead, it tries to force you to do something else that you've never done and will never do.
