RIP Jesse Owens, who figuratively gave the US's collective middle finger to Hitler and his horrific ideas and actions. There's a great podcast series from Malcolm Gladwell on the 1936 Olympics, including the critical decision to actually attend those games, when much of what Hitler was had already been revealed to the world. It's season 10 of Revisionist History, which you can find on any podcast platform. Here's the link to their webpage, in case you don't want to go through a podcast app: https://www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/revisionist-history/introducing-hitlers-olympics Edited January 29Jan 29 by nnm

Theres no platonic geometric configuration of a golf course or a race track thats so complex its unsolvable by a normal person. The fact that one course or hole or curve is easy or difficult or smooth or technical is all part of its essence. Variety is its very nature and we dont have consensus on one that is optimal. If a 5 year old draws a bunch of right-angles…hey thats Long Beach street course. If he draws an oval thats a world famous nascar track. So why would we need a “designer” to make one? Tell me something there slick: If the turn radius of a nascar track is 150 m, what's the maximum angle the turn can be banked at so that the driver doesn't get dizzy from experiencing too much centripetal acceleration during the turns? Or, how much water does a 200 yard long by 25 yard fairway need during the summer in bumfuck alabama? What should the diameter of the pipes be to deliver that much water? Horsepower of the pump? edit: fuck I just realized I'm replying to a year old post. Edited January 29Jan 29 by High Plains Drifter

Whether you take a curve at 200mph or 100mph is up to the limit of your vehicle and your skill, but its your choice. Tracks are not designed with a G objective. See prima facie evidence of variety of tracks in F1, and even nascar (ovals vs street). And anyway, nascar drivers are subjected to half the G load of F1, so theyre not at threat of being anywhere near the human limit. 2. Jack Nicklaus isnt doing hydraulic engineering, I can guarantee you that. Did you think Giorgetto Giugiaro builds engines too?

Remember that first practice session for Indy’s first time at TMS? I do. Poor bastards were screaming the corners and some almost passed out. Wild, wild weekend.

February 7Feb 7 Just watched Mississippi Burning for the umpteenth time. Gene Hackman was such a great actor. Too bad he stopped acting 10+ years ago.

February 7Feb 7 Chick-fil-a changed something about their french fries lately and now they taste like shit
February 7Feb 7 When did "LET'S GO!" become the de-facto thing to yell out when you get excited? Who made this decision? What happened to "WHOO HOO" and "ALL RIGHT!" or even "YEAH!!"?

What happened to "WHOO HOO" and "ALL RIGHT!" or even "YEAH!!"? Don't ask me. I lost track of everything popular culture at least two decades ago. Also, I really shouldn't belabor this, but... So Gene Hackman has had two wives, and has been married 30 years with each. That's actually kinda sweet.

No, banking the turns allows you to take the turn faster without skidding. The faster you take the turn, the more "G force" you experience. When the car is banked, so is your body (head tilted inward, legs outward) which results in the G forces pushing your blood toward your legs, and you get tunnel vision, dizzy, and can even blackout if the G forces are too high or last too long. This can be ameliorated by making the turn radius greater (in other words making the turn less sharp), but that would mean a longer track. Fighter pilots wear special flight suits that inflate and squeeze their legs and lower body to keep the blood higher up in the body and help prevent blacking out when they make insanely high speed, sharp turns. Its similar to (but worse than) what happens when sometimes people suddenly stand up after laying down for a long time and get dizzy (or even faint in extreme cases).

February 16Feb 16 One time I watched this short documentary on the japanese harley/lowrider motorcycle subculture. It was said how they were emulating the american motocycle gang culture, so that it was linked to the yakuza and participated in bullying and violent extortion and racketeering and all that socially stigmatized stuff. One scene had this motorcycle “gang” gather in a parking lot. The bikers were walking around gathering up trash and turns out its just a bunch of 50 year old accountants and such, and theyre all like “oh yes, we rike motos please, sound is very very good thank you, haiii.” vicious thug people, these japs.
