October 19Oct 19 On the topic of local shops, what places seem to consistently offer the lowest premiums for gold/silver purchases?I can only assume that this has been covered but mega thread is mega, and I ain’t got time for that.* Also, is it better to just purchase online?Specifically, I’m looking for gold bars or coins, and not necessarily wanting to buy in full ounces sometimes.

Just avoid any "scam yer grandad" places that say to call them for prices. I had good experiences with Provident Mint, Apmex (before it went crazy on prices), Gainesville coins, a couple others. By your last sentence, do you mean you want to buy multiple ounces, or fractional ounces?

For fractionals I usually do a tad better locally but you're limited to what they have. Austin dealers are probably pretty well stocked though. Fractional mark-ups can be high, but I have beaten the system by buying from friends, split the difference between what they'd get and what you'd pay. In Texas, if you are going with Mexican gold, I'd get the first few from a dealer. I say this because down on the border they make 2 peso copies (usually 90%, or 21.6 karat) in 18 karat, 14 karat etc for weddings and whatever. I seent em on trays at La Moneda de Oro in Laredo. Side by side it's obvious which is original, and the store wasn't trying to trick anybody, but you can see how some might get mixed up out in the wild.

November 13Nov 13 Last penny was minted today. It's still legal tender but there shouldn't be more made. I read that it may end up costing the US Mint more because it's more expensive to mint nickels and they may need to up minting more nickels now.

Have another can full of WW2 steel pennies. Edited November 14Nov 14 by Armybrat

I hear you about not swapping until the ratio drops even more, but the thought of carrying just 3 oz of gold instead of lugging around 240 oz of silver (that I don't intend to keep in the long run*) sounds wonderful. * Keeping my maples, libertads, Fijis and a bag of Franklins.

You carry your precious metals with you? One thing I find peculiar is people, here, not wanting to stack silver because it apparently takes up too much space. Get rid of a suitcase or sumthin’. CHIEF

CHIEF I don't carry it with me, but it's taking a lot of space in my deposit box and in between the studs. I want that space for a gun and ammo.
December 5Dec 5 We own tangible precious metals (by mass probably 20x more in silver than gold) and they secure a line of credit right now. So we have them in a depository institution that holds metals beyond what a standard safety deposit box can hold at a bank. Not sure who would walk around with it all that don’t make no sense.
December 5Dec 5 I keep my silver in my gun safe, on the shelf side. When CHIEF Jr. builds his house, we are putting in a walk in gun safe with a hidden entrance. We outgrew our gun safe before it was even bought. We have to lock CHIEF Jr.'s room when kids come over. It's like an armory in there. CHIEF

No one is buying scrap silver apparently.

Luckily, my grandson has a little kiln that he like to melt stuff in, so I bought him a mold to make a cross pendant for Mrs. Brat and gave him some old sterling silverware to play with. Took him 3 attempts, but it turned out nicely. She treasures it over her fancy store bought crosses even though it is comparatively heavy. Sorry for the blurry pic. December 10Dec 10 first off, that diy cross is AMAZING! I went to a local coin shop about trading my silver for gold, and he gave some jive about jammed up refineries and whatnot. Said it would probably take 78 buffalo to get 1 gold eagle. Just screwing with me? I do a monthly silver club and the stack is heavy enough, and the ratio seemingly favorable enough, for me to trade up. Edited December 10Dec 10 by CleverNickname
December 13Dec 13 These goofy metal climbs remind me of my first trip to Mexico. Guide book (early 90s) said they had a "New Peso" that was 3 to a dollar. I budgeted for that. Get there, and it's already 7 to a dollar. My backpackin ass suddenly had twice the cash. Oh to be young again.
