April 28, 20187 yr holy shit. Pretty sure the former director of the museum had to be in on this. The Terrus museum in Elne in the south of France discovered 82 works originally attributed to the artist were not painted by him. More than half the collection is thought to be fake. The paintings cost about €160,000 (£140,000). Staff at the museum were not aware of the forgeries until a visiting art historian alerted them. The council in Elne bought the paintings, drawings and watercolours for the museum over a 20-year period.Eric Forcada, an art historian, contacted the museum in the town near Perpignan several months ago to express his doubts about the authenticity of the paintings. The museum assembled a committee of experts from the cultural world, who inspected the works and concluded that 82 of them had not been painted by the Elne-born artist. Some of the paintings show buildings that were built after Terrus' death, France 3 said. The town hall has filed a complaint against those who ordered, painted, or sold the fake paintings. Local police are investigating the case, which they say could affect other regional artists too.
April 28, 20187 yr From TripAdvisor... We enjoyed his paintings and were amazed at his changing styles of art. There were portraits which seemed to be in a classical style, landscapes that were impressionist and then landscapes that were almost abstract in style. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g1022347-d5016525-r225271820-Musee_Terrus-Elne_Pyrenees_Orientales_Occitanie.html#
April 29, 20187 yr If they liked them so much without knowing they weren't by Terrus, they should rededicate the museum to both him and the forger.
April 29, 20187 yr Aren't most art forgeries copies of known works, rather than being original works attributed to an artist fraudulently? Edited April 29, 20187 yr by TwiceHorn
April 29, 20187 yr Why is it always said "the south *of* France"? We don't say "the south *of* Austin, or "the south *of* New Hampshire". What is that pretentious bullshit? Edited April 29, 20187 yr by Not that Bob Because I forgot the south of an asterisk

The story reads that half of the museum’s collection of this guy cost 140K euro not half of his life’s work cost that. Museums have a vested interest in the constant creation of forgeries. they don’t care it’s a forgery. Or more precisely they don’t want it known it’s a forgery so they look the other way.
April 30, 20187 yr Who's going to create a Thujone museum? Would put any "in the south of France" museum to shame.
April 30, 20187 yr THE Étienne Terrus? SACRE BLEU! I shall have to wear my beret tilted to the side of shock and surprise for the rest of the day.
