Went to dinner with some friends to a place they go to all the time. The assistant manager waited on us and after dinner he asked if they had anything special behind the bar. This is what they pulled out for us. Damn good. 20220827_193953.thumb.jpg.d747484067a21bc1e59450aa3fdf22f0.jpg

How much was it per pour though?

Not exactly sure. We paid for dinner and friend paid for the pours, but I think it was about $35.00 each.

Is $90 for a barrel select worth it?

Eh, probably not.  They routinely go for $80 secondary but after doing a blind with more than a dozen different ER picks I would say they’re all pretty close and generally good.  On average they’re maybe 10% better than standard ER. I have I have a bunch of these sitting around waiting to get opened and I normally just crack a basic ER instead.

This is the one I got and I definitely recommend it for anyone in the Austin area

Calling Monday to see if I can order over the phone, got a friend that can mule it up to me if so.
Thanks for the info!

I also got one of these and really like it as well. $54 for a 14 yr old finished whisky. It drinks very well.

Both stores are close to each other.

Debs had some nice hard to get bottles but they charge for them. Had an eht single barrel for $199.

Paid $38 for mine this week, but I’ve done a lot of business with that guy…

So maybe I do a little business with this guy too. Maybe I say party taco sent me. Surly’s look out for each other.

Come on up to Maryland and I’ll happily make an introduction…

Where is that?

If you zoom in, obviously it's at Raymond's.

Raymond’s is in Arlington I believe. Have a coworker who lives over in that area. He sent me the pic and asked if I wanted a few bottles. I didn’t answer quickly so he went ahead and got me one. I may head over there and buy a few more. Are ERs good for any type of trade?

It's probably too late. They're sold out if you're still deciding. I would do it if it was a verified 11 or 11.5 years old. That stuff is very difficult to find outside of bourbon clubs.

I'm intrigued. I bet Roma has a pick. What's Heaven Gate's story?

Obviously not Dickel. Good. Do they use charcoal filtering? The only people that do it correctly is Jack Daniel's. Even Heaven Hill products with charcoal filtering are slightly off.

The text underneath the picture says 7 years MGP.

I don't think there's a consensus on who the source is for all of their expressions.

The pick we did is TN stuff that is NOT charcoal filtered.

If it helps, I see an Eagle Rare 10 - Spec's "Single Barrel Select" for $80 on one of the Facebook secondary groups I follow.

I flipped a Harlen Wheatley ER pick for $125 the other day.

Ha, wow.  I’ll let my spare six different ER picks (no distiller selects) go for the low low price of 750 or a 19 GTS or a PHC wheat.

All set on the EHT, but I still think it’s a better use of funds than a $90 ER pick.

Didn’t pull the trigger on the Calumet 15. Just kinda leery on spending $120 only to find out it’s underwhelming. Unless one of my surly brethren pipes up and recommends the 15. I’ve heard fairly solid things on these two so a little less hesitant to try them out.

Local barrel pick.  I have enjoyed this one, especially the opening weekend, they had it $39.  Very nice.

You god damn nerds need to stop buying all the good stuff. I go to Specs and they don’t have shit because you motherfuckers are on double secret lists and wait in line at 10:00 am on a Tuesday like a bunch of methadone addicts.

There’s plenty of good stuff on the shelf if you know what to look for. Quit whining like a bitch just cause the taters camp out, take their kids\wives to stand in line, join bourbon clubs, social media their ass off and basically sell their souls, for the allocated stuff.

I liked the Penelope Texas Select. Haven’t had any St Cloud offerings before. Let us know your impressions.

Checking in. Yep. The Jack Bonded/Jack Triple Mash mix is my leader in the clubhouse for an everyday drinker. Especially after witnessing the blasphemy of one Buffalo Trace per customer at the signature Spec’s.

Hot take alert: I like the Bonded/Triple Blend blend more than the Poor Man’s Four Grain recipe mentioned upthread. I mean no disrespect to the author. I just like it better.

I've been a big fan of the regular Blackened for a while now as an everyday drink. Just got hold of the Blackened Rye double cask finished in Madeira and Rum casks and love it too.

Ok, fine, I’ll make a batch…

Went to Twin tonight to grab a couple of bottles of French white to have with a side of King Salmon tomorrow.  Dude was helpful and nice so I asked if they had any interesting bourbons around and he coughed up a barrel pick ER 10.  It’s good, no blending necessary.
