Stopped by Dart in South Lake Tahoe and they had the usual's behind the counter and over priced and these didn't buy anything as Ill be in the area for the next week or 2.

on that note, we drove over to Virginia City in NV to check it out, love old mining towns. Saw these in a museum and thought it was pretty neat

So I am a rum drinker and don't know shit about bourbon . Son in law comes over for thanksgiving every year and I usually buy him a bottle. Big bourbon drinker , but not the drunk guy. Looking for a bottle that will be more of a "cool really appreciate it" than a " meh, rolling eyes " bottle
Past bottles include :
Angels envy
Woodford reserve
Evan Williams single barrel
Gentleman Jacks (yes I know that's a whiskey )
Looking around $50. What does Surly suggest?

Belle Meade sour mash
OF1910
BT store picks

If you are in Texas and can find Whitmeyers, I love the Bourbon and Rye blend they do. Usually about $42 a bottle.

Agreed. And the bourbon chase has become so ridiculous that it's become one of the better $40 bottles easily available on the shelf.

If I had to guess, people are settling for Bulleit because the overall selection is so shitty at this particular TW (West U), and they were probably close to running out.

Or it's a marketing scheme

Sure, anything is possible. Maybe they have too much Bulleit, haha.

Yeah. It feels like reverse psychology to me.

Sometimes if I'm popping into a TW real quick, I'll do a walk down the bourbon aisle and look for the "only one per customer" labels as an easy filter to see if there's anything interesting that day. I could see this getting a few taters.

I will try it again obviously.  But man it was awful.

I tasted it at the Houston Whiskey Social. Much better than regular Jack. I remember some smokiness on the back end that some might not like.

I love JD in general.  Maybe I have malaria.

I had some over the weekend.  I think it's good.  Not as good as a BP obviously, but its got the banana bread that the BP's do.  Can't wait to get it.

They didn’t have this at the Houston Whiskey Social. I was a bit disappointed.

I was honestly shocked when I saw it at the club a few weeks back. Been looking for a bottle for going on 3 years now… never even seen it on secondary.

What’s the best Balcones? I went through a bottle of Single Malt a few years ago and it was very good, but I’m more of a bourbon guy. I’m seeing the red label around here a lot lately.

The Wheated Bourbon they release once a year at the distillery. I could take it or leave it with the rest of their lineup. Just not my jam. The Rum might be the second best thing they make.

i got a bottle of the grand cru.  let me know next time your in dfw and you can have it.  not for me, but you might enjoy.

I had one of their beers while waiting for my Wheated last year when the tasting room was outside in the tent. It was very good. Also, I bought this as well

I liked the Shiner recipe. Fun, reasonably priced malt whiskey.

Sounds like their regular rotation bourbons are a pass then.

I'd say they are "fine". The Pot Still is affordable and easy drinking, yet unremarkable. It's just not what I'm looking for in a bourbon personally. They all have that Balcones "funk", which can be polarizing.

If you want to put your money behind a Texas made bourbon, Still remains the best bet IMO. I think Treaty Oak's Ghost Hill Bourbon is also pretty solid, especially some of their store picks.

There’s only 3 Balcones offerings that I absolutely won’t touch: Rye, Pot still, and Brimstone. Everything else is fine but the price point is a bit high. Still better tasting and better value than anything Garrison has ever put out.

Their Blue Corn Bourbon is very good. Its almost 130 proof, so may not be for everyone

Brimstone leaves my mouth feeling like I just cleaned out my chimney with my tongue.

I am a big Rumble fan, though-it’s my go to when I want to share something weird.

Never had that, but True Blue was a drain pour for me. Way too sweet.

you must have  bought the vip tickets for the pappy or btac tastings.  only one year was i able to try all 10, then they started making you pick one tasting or the other.  you seemed to have had a little from each.

Event staff were walking around leftover BTAC. They were briefly pouring Pappy 20 at a table.

I just had a VIP ticket.

will you do it again next year?

I think I got it out my system. I’d rather go to like a BTAC tasting dinner or something.

Cool event. Professional staff. Solid venue. It’s nothing they did, I just don’t want to go again.

Found a bottle of Booker's Tagalong Batch today. $95.99.

There were still 4 or 5 more on the shelf if anybody's looking to buy.

And yes, I know the Booker's I bought today is 127.9 proof. It may also be a bit too much fire for my taste.

Got a buddy that hooked me up with a Bardstown Ferrand (from his friend that owns a liquor store in KY). Also waiting on my Blue Run High Rye bourbon to come in from Seelbach’s. Can’t wait for both to show up.

Please tell me how you’re ordering Seelbach’a while residing in Texas.

A buddy of mine told me about a workaround where you set your order for pickup, but then reach out to their customer service department and they arrange for you to send a shipping label to them and they mail it to you. I ordered my Blue Run thinking I could do this, but when I reached out they said that they can’t do that for Blue Run. But they said since I ordered $300 worth of bourbon they would ship it to me.
