Stopped at a liquor store in the middle of nowhere in Alabama last week, and saw a handle of Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star.  Not priced on the shelf.  Took it up front and asked for the price - $42 and change before tax.  Out the door for under $50.  I figured it would be a perfectly acceptable mixer, which it is.  This weekend I discovered that it is pretty darn tasty with just an ice cube or two.

Never seen it on the shelf in Tennessee.  I am gruntled.

Not a bad expression (albeit young) of the mashbill #2. You really ought to try Tom Moore BiB out of Barton. It’s a damn steal at less than half the price you paid, and quite the sipper when not mixing. It’s probably a year older than AAA (has to be at least 4 as a BiB)

And im reminded of the teaching opportunity that Buffalo Trace has zero ownership of mashbill #2 and all of its expressions.

I’d rate WJ lucky 13 around a 6.5-7. Worth a try. Just can’t get over the price tag.

The Spec’s pick was good, but the Alamo City 12 year Widow Jane is one of the best 12 year MGP I’ve had.  I’d probably take Boone County 12 over it and that’s about it.

is this really relevant though?  since buffalo trace is owned by sazerac they technically have zero ownership of everything they make.  i cant remember the back story exactly.  when age bought the distillery from schenker (was it?) and then sold it to sazerac they kept ownership of all the brands made by mashbill #2?

but back to the relevancy.  if you owned a rembrandt would you take a sharpie and draw a penis on it?  its a masterpiece and remains unchanged through the years.  mashbill #2 came from george t staggs distillery, i'm guessing invented somewhere in those years (maybe by him?).  have any of the owners ever changed it?  obviously wheatley cant (without japanese approval), but i would guess it's never changed, so what difference does it make who owns it?

It makes a difference in so far as the Japanese could take their chips home and bye bye mash bill #2. Just like every other owner of bourbon. Will they?  Doubtful. But most folks not close to the business simply don’t know that the Blanton they drink isn’t BT. Or Sazerac since you want to be so specifically accurate.

But since you raised it, stitzel was a motherfucking Rembrandt. And they drew a penis on it.

Said goodbye to a good friend in celebration yesterday…. These older MWs were so tasty!

It’s not bad for $40

I picked up a Caribou when sorting through the Longhorn Liquor drop leftovers. I’ll crack it during the game. I expect absolutely nothing. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Pedantic Canadian weak ass swill.
It sucks ass.

I don’t know that I’d go that far… it’s serviceable while overpriced.

Got around to opening my 2024 Bakers 13 while watching this garbage Texas at Kentucky game - it's solid but I don't think I'm a big Beam guy

I know this is a Bourbon thread, but good whisky is good whisky right?

I don't have a whole lot of bourbons in my cabinet - mainly Scotch, Irish or Japanese whiskies.

Nikka from the Barrell is my current go to. Medium body, subtly sweet with a smooth finish. I usually drink it on the rocks, but lately I've been drinking it neat. Not terribly pricy at $63.

I brought back a couple bottle of Kavalan whiskies when I went to visit my parents in Taiwan. I'm waiting for a special occasion to drink those. ~$200 /bottle is too nice to drink on a school night.

And if you like Kavalan, you must try Amrut if you haven’t yet.

@Bert Orange you try this one yet? I’d buy it based on the label alone.

Seems a tad pricey for young albeit cask strength Jack.

Hopefully it’s on of the cherry Nelson barrels that they put in a few bottlings. Some of them were exceptional.

I pulled the trigger. The goldendoodle connection got me. I hope it’s good.

Nikka from the Barrel is the first Japanese whiskey I ever tried.  Good balance of smoke vs. grassy/floral.  I like it on an occasional basis, but I'm kind of the opposite of you, i.e., I prefer the usual taste profiles of bourbons and ryes over scotch, Irish whiskey, etc.

Am I on island on the JD Single Malt Sherry Finish? The bottle has zero buzz online and word of mouth. Always on the shelf.

I love the stuff. Most crushable JD bottle in their regular lineup.

I think it’s more that

1) Bourbon is down in general
2) Finished bottles attract a smaller audience
3) There still too many new products coming to market to keep up with

That said, I’ll help the cause and go grab one…

I think JD10 is more crushable, I’m good for exactly one pour of the sherry finish in a night before I’m ready to move on.  It’s good, but it’s one of those bottles that will take me 5 years to kill.

I should have clarified. Regularly available JD regular lineup products. Shelfers.

I've only seen it as a 1 liter bottle at Total Wine - did you find a smaller bottle? I feel like I've seen you talk this bottle up before so I'm intrigued, but a 1L is an awful lot for something I haven't tried at all.

It only comes in the liter. Hence the $75 price tag.

Be careful out there boys. Specs can’t get rid of the new Little Book Infinity II. Asking price is a cool $180.

They were up to their eyeballs in Old Fitz 7. Glad I waited it out and got one for $50.

Any specific Spec’s with the Old Fitz?

Have you tried any of the Belle Meade or Peg Leg Porker offerings?

Belle Meade was good, if not great, when it was batched 8-9 year MGP.  I think it’s coming back as something else, which probably won’t be worth the money.

I've been looking for a replacement for this ever since it was discontinued.

Damn just missed a bottle of Blantons at the local winn dixie.  Some got there 15 minutes before me.  $85.00

Does anyone here have experience with Copper & Cask? Looks like they have some 8 year old MGP sourced options.
