OWA purchased at Wirt Road Specs today.  Just ask for it from the back.

Have fun out there.

man you know I dont have any Crown in my house

do have some Beam in the back, but that's neither here nor there

There ain’t nothing wrong with no Jim Beam.

And since every master distiller at most of the big distillers are from the Beam family, we wouldn’t have good Bourbon without them

Enjoying some RY10 while I rewatch Fargo S2. Really, this is fine whiskey.
I got an extra bottle, btw, if anybody wants to trade me an Old Fitz. This is really much better bourbon than that.

I love RY10 so much I have 5 bottles at the house, but after tasting Old Fitz a couple different times I’m tempted to pay the $200 secondary price to get my hands on a bottle.

Nothing is worth secondary market prices unless you consider bourbon something to possess rather than something to be consumed eventually.

I would pay $200 for Fitz but never seen it. RY10 is delicious though

Old Fitz is good but not $200 good IMO.

RY10 is among the best in the world at its MSRP.

Finding OWA for $24 yesterday was a real plus.

Found Old Fitz in some store in Houston yesterday. It was sitting in a case for $499. I had a good laugh.

Last night had several Weller 12s for $12 each at Steak 48 in Houston.  One of the cheapest Bourbons on the menu.

About to go taste Balcone's Single Malt, Single Barrel Privately bottled for Barnett's in Waco.   Will report

It’s fucking glorious isn’t it? I think I might like it better than Blanton’s

if scarcity is any indication of quality, you should.  it's harder to find than blantons.

I'm having ETL right now, at my house.

Same here. Kinda makes me hope that joint ran out about 5 minutes before he got there. Is that wrong?

Currently on my 6th finger of RY10.
Fucking delicious
One of my favorites. I will buy it every time i see it (at a reasonable price) from now on.

To my taste that bloodline goes ETL>Rock Hill Farms>Blantons

I love all three.

Unpopular opinion incoming... ETL is very overrated and blantons is very underrated only because of availability of each.

Very Old Barton Bottled in Bond is back fellas. It’s one of Sazerac’s bastard brands so of course they slapped some confusing, cheap label on it.

The handle said BiB, 100 Proof with a big 6 on it. Not a age statement, just the number 6. The 750 ml didn’t have the 6.

The original BiB was supposed to phenomenal for the price. I rolled the dice on a 750. Pretty low risk / high reward.

Goody goody in Dallas has had that in stock for a few years. Allegedly not as good as the old juice but for the price I enjoy it quite a bit.

Single bottles I wish I had more of :

Hancock's Presidential Reserve (I am worried about the future of this brand, but maybe Buffalo Trace surprises us with a big release like Rock Hill Farms this year)

Rock Hill Farms

Kentucky Owl Rye Batch 1 (2017)

Old Scout Single Barrel 12 Year (2017)

E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof

Ive never had that Old Scout.  Need to remedy that.

Goody Goody on Woodway had a 1.75 and 750 Eagle Rare yesterday.

I decided against those, maybe against better judgment  and grabbed their last Weller 107 on the shelf and a Russell's Reserve SiB.

Cashier told me that they had Blanton's earlier in the day, but sold out in a few hours.

About what time did you go in?

They didn't have any of that stuff when I was in there last night.

Found some OF 1920 on the shelf today.  Never had any of their bourbons.  They also had the OF BiB on the shelf.  Hope I made the right decision.

Edited by Chewbacca

I was in there around 5-6pm.

The Russell's Reserve SiB was a store pick from the Houston Bourbon Consortium(?).

I'd really like to grab a RY10, but have yet to see one in a store around the inner loop.

any tips?

That's pretty good juice, seeing it around town a lot lately, not too scarce.

It has a good reputation as the best of the OF varieties, except for the unicorn, OF BBB.

1920 is their best offering outside of Birthday Bourbon. Good choice.

I don't really have any tips on Rebel Yell 10 inside the loop. I've never seen in the wild down here. From what I've gathered, Spec's didn't receive very much RY10 this year, and it appears to be an annual trend. I'd sit on a Goody Goody or Total Wine. I'm kind of there on RY10; I'm almost willing to pay secondary.

Premiere Spirits on Holcomb has a bit of a different selection.

Found a tasty store pick 1792 Full Proof, which they seem to have quite a bit of.

Some Lexington guys feel that the quality of the Birthday Bourbon has declined in recent years. They lay the blame squarely on this young lady: https://www.forbes.com/sites/hilarysheinbaum/2018/02/26/how-master-bourbon-specialist-jacquelyn-zykan-balances-raising-the-bar-and-a-little-boy/#3df80d458e18

They basically questioned her palette, and why she has so much control on what gets released. Ms. Zykan was featured in the documentary Neat.

I will say their opinion jives with what most experts are saying. Bourbon Birthday hasn't been as good in recent years. I've seen 2014 as the cut off.

I probably should just buying all the RY10 in Austin and shipping it to Houston Surly

I could get my parents to grab me one, but then I'd have to go visit them.  #surlyson

It’s always important to do that after lunch – even if you spit! I spit everything.

Everything?

And fwiw I was turned on to the 1920 in a bar in Louisville by a bartender who was basically laying out the same stuff about the decline of OFBB and that 1920 was the best OF product. I still want to add OFBB to the cabinet, but 1920 is really choice stuff.

I'm liking it so far.  Not as hot as I expected, coming in at 115 proof.  Satisfied with this purchase, for sure.

Yeah, I'll politely disagree with the 1920 is better than Birthday Bourbon. Birthday is superior, but a lot of people like 1920's higher poof.

It would be insane to vat Birthday Bourbon, but a 60:40 OFBB to 1920 blend would be fascinating.

@thestud or @huge probably have the reserves to give a try.

It's a strange choice on a lot of levels, until you consider who owns Old Forester. Brown-Forman, the same people that own Jack Daniels.

They're not trying to be the next Pappy, they're trying to beat Jim Beam. I'm sure they'll spin it off on another brand, but I fully expect Old Forester juice in a honey flavored bottle at some point.

Be very tankful that Sazerac/Buffalo Trace owns the majority of the really good juice.

Yeah, I thought about it, I wouldn't do it unless I had a 4+ bottles of OFBB of the same year. And I might do a 70:30 OFBB to 1920 blend.

I do think the OFBB proof could be pushed up some.
